A big new Toyota LandCruiser 200 has the right to call itself the “King of the Road”, though the Nissan Patrol would also have you believe that the Patrol lays claim to this particular title. Both of these vehicles have what it takes to ride over any road surface in awesome comfort and presence. Though the Toyota LandCruiser 200 and Nissan Patrol may not be quite as grandiose nor hold the status of a large Range Rover or Mercedes 4×4, they certainly offer great comfort, luxury and superior reliability and ruggedness; and, it’s the two R’s (reliability and ruggedness) that make all the difference in the real world. Toyota’s new LandCruiser 200 Diesel models are large, dominant and very powerful. Their rugged4x4 ability is mixed with wonderfully-crafted interiors with plenty of superfluity in the higher-end models.
What powers the new LandCruiser 200 Diesel is a twin-turbo engine with 200 kW of power at 3600 rpm and a whopping 650 Nm of torque available at a very low 1600 rpm. Translate these figures to a practical review, and what you experience on the road is huge, smooth power delivery. Off road, the blend of low down torque and rugged 4×4 traction is simply awesome. Yes, the LandCruiser 200 Diesel is weighty, but generally this goes unnoticed. What you won’t want to be testing out in the LandCruiser is side–on wet, slippery slope capability. Any large 4×4 with plenty of weight hates this, because when traction is lost things get very dangerous. However, “Off-roading 101” would tell you that you never tackle a steep climb on the diagonal or horizontally – even in a Range Rover! Gravity, mass and momentum are a blend of physics that even the best 4×4 suffers from. That said, the off-road potential of a new Toyota LandCruiser 200 is phenomenal. The six-speed automatic does a wonderful job of providing smooth and reliable gear selection. And low range offers superb traction, whatever the terrain might be. The big Toyota Landruiser 200 Diesel is a fulltime, 4WD, 4×4 in every sense of these three “F” words.
Under normal road conditions, the LandCruiser 200 Diesel 4×4 rides quietly and comfortably and it should offer around 10 litres/100 km when cruising extra urban situations. Plant your right foot a lot, tow or head off road and the economy naturally suffers. If fuel efficiency is what you’re after, then you might need to look elsewhere in the 4×4 fraternity, however you’ll be missing out big time in the most complete large 4×4 experience. Again a new Patrol offers the same; it just comes down to preference.
So you want one? So do I! All new Toyota LandCruiser 200 models come with the option of the very good 4.5-litre, V8 twin-turbo diesel engine. Buy into the new LandCruiser 200 via the base model GX, and in this guise you get 17-inch steel wheels that do a great job of nicely completing the intimidating size and kingly design of the big 4×4. With a snorkel air intake as standard, the off-road experience gets a whole lot more daring and water crossings become a whole lot easier (and deeper). Out the rear, the GX LandCruiser is nicely finished off with bold taillights and smooth edges. Also, out the back are what Toyota calls “Barn Doors”, and these two doors open wide on the vertical axis – enabling a huge opening for loading masses of luggage into. A 138-litre combined fuel tank volume costs a bit to fill but lasts quite a long time. The 138 litres is made up of a 93-litre main tank, and then a 45-litre sub fuel tank for a reserve supply – as it were.
Another feature of the new Toyota LandCruiser 200 GX Diesel is some standard 4×4 equipment that gives you the edge when it comes to on and off-road supremacy. Systems like the Multi Terrain Anti-Lock Braking System, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Active Traction Control (A-TRC), and CRAWL Control with Off-road Turn Assist. Then, when you’re travelling out on the open road, some of these features add to the vehicle’s safety. An AM/FM radio with MP3 compatibility, a single-disc in-dash CD player, four speakers, Bluetooth connectivity and a 12V accessory connector completes the big LandCruiser 200 GX Diesel package.
Jump into a GXL LandCruiser and you get what the GX gets and then 17-inch alloys, privacy glass, a Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), aluminium side steps, Smart Entry Smart Start, Dual Zone Climate Control, a Reversing Camera, a 6.1-inch touchscreen display, MP3 compatibility, satellite navigation and a six-speaker sound system. LED low beam headlamps with standard auto levelling also comes as standard on the GXL.
Most people would be satisfied with what the GXL offers, however you could take a look at the new Toyota LandCruiser 200 Diesel VX model and think again. What the VX comes with are some other luxury features which include: 18-inch alloy wheels, a 9-inch Electro Multi Vision (EMV) touchscreen audio display with Satellite Navigation, DAB radio functionality, a nine speaker surround sound system, Bi-LED headlamps with dynamic auto levelling and LED Daytime Running Lamps (DRLs), a moon roof, a leather accented interior with woodgrain trim, a Multi-Information Display (MID), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and very handy front and rear parking sensors.
Top of the ladder, and very much a king of the road, the new Toyota LandCruiser 200 Sahara Diesel provides its owner with rain sensing wipers, four-zone climate control air conditioning, Automatic High Beam (AHB), front and second row seat heaters, rear seat entertainment, a cooler box, a memory system for the driver’s seat, telescopic steering, telescopic exterior side mirrors, a powered back door, Multi-Terrain Monitors (MTM), and a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
Buy any one of these sensational new 4×4 LandCruiser 200 Diesels from Toyota and you’re in on the Toyota 3 year/100,000 km warranty; not that you’ll ever need to use it…
