Looking sharp from all angles, a new Toyota Camry is going to turn heads. Flowing lines built on a body structure that has been strengthened and reinforced with occupant safety in mind, the Camry is an exceptionally safe medium-to-large car.
Three big changes to the Camry line-up are the Wagon alternative, the introduction of a Special Edition and the Hybrid model. The Camry Wagon is a superior vehicle for those who need extra luggage space, while the Camry Hybrid uses the very latest hybrid technology. Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive delivers superior performance while significantly reducing fuel consumption. And the way it works is built on a full hybrid system that switches between an electric motor and the engine, or runs off the combination of both. It intelligently manages the energy flows from the two different power sources to optimise efficiency. The end result is an average fuel consumption figure equivalent or better than a Suzuki Swift. The only difference between a Camry Hybrid and a Swift is a big jump of 36 kW and 54 Nm – a big difference in the real world.

A sign spotted around town reads “Thinking Cars?”, leaving the reader unsure whether it was asking if readers were thinking about cars, or if it was talking about cars that think. If it referred to cars that think, then it might have been meaning the new Toyota Camry, which comes with the advertising slogan “The car that reads the road”. Since its first appearance, the Toyota Camry has been a best seller in the United States.
The Toyota Camry comes in four main versions: Grande, Sportivo, Ateva and Altise. However, all versions of the Toyota Camry have certain key features underneath their sleek, smooth exteriors. All come with “thinking features” such as the Intelligent 5-Speed Gated automatic transmission and the Active Braking with Intelligence systems. Other features common to all versions of the new Toyota Camry include what the manufacturers call psychoacoustic audio technology and some new pedestrian safety features.
Under the bonnet, the Toyota Camry Grande makes good use of the 2.4 litre petrol engine and five-speed automatic transmission, providing a maximum power of 117 kW at 5700 rpm and a maximum torque of 218 Nm at 4000 rpm. The Ateva version of the Toyota Camry has similar performance. To drive, the Toyota Camry is almost silent on the road, performing nicely and offering the driver good neutral handling prowess.
The differences between the different versions of the Toyota Camry lie in the bells and whistles. The Toyota Camry Grande comes with a satellite navigation system as standard, covering major Australian capitals, primary national roads and some regional areas. The Grande version of the Toyota Camry also boasts a fully leather trimmed interior with woodgrain-look trim, rain-sensing windscreen wipers and Bluetooth technology. The Toyota Camry Ateva is cloth trimmed with a leather steering wheel and gearstick, and has the satellite navigation system available as an option. The Toyota Camry Grande’s security system includes a security coded radio and an engine immobiliser; the Toyota Camry Ateva’s security system includes a boot, bonnet and door alarm monitoring, and keyless entry. All versions of the Toyota Camry have a good sound system with CD player and plenty of speakers for passengers in all five seats to enjoy.
All versions of the Toyota Camry have excellent safety features. Eight airbags are standard, namely driver and passenger dual airbags plus front side and full length curtain SRS airbags, and the Toyota Camry Altise has front side and full curtain airbags available as options. In the Toyota Camry Ateva, both the driver and the front passenger seats come with pretensioner seatbelts with force limiters, and the rear seats come provided with ALR outboard seatbelts and centre seatbelt for child seats. The intelligence of the Toyota Camry is shown by the impact sensing fuel cut in a crash, and in the Toyota Camry Grande’s Vehicle Stability Control system.
The Toyota Camry is a superbly built car with plenty of practical features to make the drive safe, quiet and enjoyable – a good all rounder.
