Out in the mud and rough terrain you’re always going to want a vehicle with proven reliability and talent. Outback drives are some of the toughest conditions on any vehicle, so with the new Toyota Prado Diesel SUV you are going to be a step ahead of the competition. When the word “adventure” happens to be in your name it’s going to be a tough, comfortable and dependable all-rounder like the Toyota Prado Diesel SUV that you’ll need.
Under the bonnet, the reliable power source comes from the new Prado Diesel engine. Found in some of the other vehicles that Toyota manufactures, the grunty 130 kW, 2.8-litre turbo-diesel is not only the most modern diesel engine that Toyota has at the time of writing, but it is right ready to perform. Having massive towing capacity, you’ll rest assured the 420 Nm of torque will happily tow up to 2500 kg now worries at all. It might seem odd to find that Toyota have opted for less capacity than the outgoing 3.0 turbo-diesel but the modern 2.8-litre engine design has more than closed the cc gap.
With the Prado’s advanced 4WD technology even the most difficult terrain can be conquered. Automatic Prado Diesel models have some extra terrain-taming technology in the form of CRAWL control technology. It is essentially an innovative Four Wheel Drive cruise control system that can manage the way power is directed to each wheel independently in order to generate maximum grip on steep or slippery terrain. Now who would want to be without that! Whether you’re taking on a steep descent, driving over rocks, forwarding streams or carving up swamps, you can take your foot off the pedals and simply CRAWL your way forward. There are five available crawl speed settings, and all you need to do is push a button and steer your way ahead.
But that’s not all, when you’ve stopped on a steep slope off-road or just stopped at the lights on a steep hill, Hill Start Assist (HAC) reduces any backward movement for around five seconds by momentarily holding the brakes on so you can get underway again – too easy! Downhill Assist Control (DAC) automatically controls the brakes on difficult descents – whether you’re reversing or going forward. By managing the degree of braking to each wheel individually in 4×4 situations, it helps you to take the descent at an even 5-7km/h. Having had some experience of DAC on a steep rocky descent, the off-road safety and capability definitely goes up a notch or two with this feature.
Climb up and into the stylish new Prado Diesel SUV range, and the interior is like entering a world of comfort and modern style. Practical, clever and attractive interior design makes the Prado SUV extremely comfortable. There are many ways that the second and third rows of seats can be folded or not folded flat to accommodate passengers and luggage. Two 12 Volt DC outlets on the centre console means that you can power other electrically dependant equipment with ease.
Depending on the model of Toyota Prado Diesel SUV, the vehicle can be dripping with luxury features, but even in the base model GX Prado you can have features like a six-speaker high quality audio system to tease the ears. Air-conditioning is standard and a seriously high level of safety features set you up with a nice new SUV from Toyota. The GXL models are fitted with a 9-speaker audio system.
Opt for the premium Prado Diesel SUV and the Kakadu models come with a stunning 14-speaker wraparound JBL system. A rear seat entertainment system features a 9-inch monitor and a Blu-ray player with its own load slot, plus 3 wireless headphones and 2 wireless headphone jacks in Kakadu models. Premium leather seats are really comfortable.
To drive, the new Prado Diesel range feels amazingly light footed and agile. There is plenty of body-eight there, but the steering and suspension design is more than up to the task of keeping the large Prado body fully under control with accurate steering and a superior ride quality. Despite delivering on torque and packing plenty of power, the new turbo diesel Prado returns well under 10 litres/100 km in the real world. Smooth auto and direct manual models are available.
Backing their product, Toyota provides new Prado Diesel owners with a three year/ 100,000 km new car warranty. It makes a lot of sense to buy Toyota, particularly when it comes to SUV, 4×4 adventures.
