The 2022 Volkswagen Arteon Wagon offers the 140TSI or the 206TSI R-Line models for Australian new car buyers on the lookout for a station wagon that delivers on style, tech, comfort, and excitement. Other wagons on a par with the latest VW Arteon would be vehicles like the equally-as-stunning Peugeot 508, the Volvo’s V60, and the Skoda Superb and Octavia variants. High-spec variants in each of these rival line-ups match up well with an Arteon, and all of them can cover the ground effortlessly, with each one having the ability to carry a decent amount of luggage and a small family while doing so.
So, what makes the new Arteon Wagon so nice to live with? The first answer I would give is that the Arteon Wagon has a bit of exclusivity with its presence on the road. There are few new cars quite like it out there that offer the same smooth lines, wide stance, and elegant lines in a station wagon shape. Mazda’s 6 and Genesis’s new G70 Wagon are two excellent Asian wagons which give the Arteon a run for its money in the design awards, and, in the case of cash, the Mazda 6 is the cheapest station wagon with similar comfort and practicality. Of course, there are a number of other station wagons you can buy, but nearly all of them will be a whole lot more expensive! I’m thinking a comparable BMW, Audi, or Mercedes Benz.
Boot space in the new Arteon is pretty decent, and to get inside the boot you can simply sweep your foot under the bumper for the tailgate to lift electronically. You’ll find a nice square loading space with 565 litres when the seats are in place. There is a hidden area beneath the floor of the boot for putting your odds and ends, but unfortunately there’s no dedicated area to store the parcel shelf, so you’ll have to occasionally leave that at home or forget about it altogether. To give you an idea: the Arteon Wagon offers 2 litres more than the Arteon Hatch (Yes that’s all – Style is important you know!), 85 litres more than you can fit in a more expensive Audi A5 Sportback, a bit less than a Skoda Octavia, but not anywhere close to the 650 litres you’ll find in a VW Passat Wagon or the 660 litres in a Skoda Superb. The cheaper Mazda 6 Wagon provides 522 litres.
Occupants in any seat will feel comfortable; the seats are superb and spacious. As far as quality goes, the Arteon is beautifully crafted inside – it is, after all, a VW. There are recent changes to the latest Volkswagen Arteon’s interior, so the old car’s analogue clock has gone, and the physical heating controls have also gone. It looks nice, but instead you have a row of touch-sensitive keys under the infotainment system, which isn’t quite so user-friendly while you are driving.
Although the latest Volkswagen Arteon has not been ANCAP tested, Euro NCAP gave it the full 5-star tick of approval. ABS, brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control, collision avoidance technology, around the car cameras, driver attention detection, lane departure warning, active lane keeping assist, parking assistance, electronic brake force distribution, and even a hill holder assistance feature is standard. These are just some of the neat safety features that complement the strong safety cage and 9 airbags.
Out on the road, the Volkswagen Arteon Wagon is a quiet and comfortable car to drive. It is responsive, and will effortlessly cover distance without fuss nor any sign of a lack of punch. The 140TSI has 140 kW of power and FWD. This set-up is brisk and refined, the ride comfortable and relaxing. Your adrenaline starts pumping when you get behind the wheel of the 2.0-litre Turbo 4-cylinder AWD 206TSI Arteon Wagon, where you have 206 kW of power and 400 Nm of torque under your right foot. This R-Line wagon is fast, with a 0-100 km/h sprint time of around 5.7 seconds. All that performance still returns an impressive average fuel efficiency somewhere between 8 and 9 litres/100 km.
The 2022 Arteon also works beautifully about town, with a very quiet drivetrain, and light, responsive steering. VW’s stylish Arteon uses a seven-speed automatic DSG transmission that is well-suited to the car as it shuffles up and down through the gears discreetly.
So, is the new VW Arteon a good Wagon? Yes, it’s a great wagon with loads of style, comfort, and satisfaction.
