Caravelles have been a favourite of mine ever since I can remember. Offered new, the Volkswagen Caravelle is a clean-cut van that is extremely practical and dependable.

A Volkswagen Caravelle provides a top blend of comfort, space and safety for the driver and passengers. Having the ability to seat nine provides so much in the way of people moving duties. Each row of seats in the back can be easily removed, leaving a flat floor which is great for transporting large cargo items.

A new 103 TDI engine provides top power and strong torque. Safety features are well thought out, so you’ll find the Caravelle comes with ESP across the entire range. Front side airbags and curtain airbags are also part of the Caravelle package. If you like, you can equip the van with satellite navigation, a six-CD Changer, sun roof, power sliding doors, front fog lights with a cornering function and an alarm with a backup horn.

Last time I was out with my son on a camping trip, we climbed a mountain, slept in a tent and ate the sandwiches one makes on the run at a rest stop picnic table. I’ve gotta say that this time away with my son has been one of the highlights of the year so far. We have already started planning out the next one! Taking loads of camping gear and many family and friends on an adventure in the Volkswagen Caravelle can be performed in remarkable comfort and safety. Not only does the big van offer top safety features like: front airbags for the driver and front passenger – as well as side and curtain airbags too, an anti-theft electronic engine immobiliser (Very handy when in back block locations.), an alarm with a back-up horn, child safety seat anchor points mounted on the back of the second row seats, sensors at the front and rear for parking in tight spots, seat belts in the front that are height adjustable and boast pre-tensioners and an automatic locking feature after take-off, but the Caravelle also has a safety shell that is extremely sturdy and has been built using reinforced steel Front and rear crumple zones are incorporated into the overall design. The seat belts are all 3 pointers, and the big van boasts Traction Control, ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution, Traction control with ASR and Electronic Stability program with Brake Assist. So with you and your family and friends all looked after, you can get on and enjoy the driving pleasure the Volkswagen Caravelle provides.

There are two turbo-diesel engines offered, both of which are smooth operators, and both of which provide plenty of power to get the job done. These are state of the art five – cylinder, all alloy engines and are 2-litre in size – therefore providing long breaks between fuel stops. The power output is 96 kW at 3500 rpm (short wheel base) and 128 kW at 3500 rpm (long wheel base). Incredible torque is offered from either engine: 340 Nm at 2000 – 2300 rpm, and 400 Nm at 2000 – 2300 rpm. The choice one makes for transmission lies between an automatic six-speed Tiptronic and a six-speed manual transmission. For those who opt to use ablution blocks at camping grounds might be happy with the front wheel driven models; however, for those who like to venture a little further afield will probably take a long hard look at the 4MOTION model, which offers potent 4×4 ability.

Driving in a Volkswagen Caravelle means that you will be driving one of the more luxuriously equipped vans seen on Australian roads. The 3-Zone Climatronic air conditioning unit, door step illumination for the cab and sliding doors, and an AM/ FM stereo with a single CD player and an MP3 compatible head unit with security coding are some of the goodies provided. Believe me the list is long and extensive. Crystal clear sound can be enjoyed throughout the roomy cabin via eight speakers. An optional instrumentation satellite navigation system with a 6CD Changer might be an electronic gadget more to your tastes.
