Volvos are moving entirely away from diesels and into the hybrid/ electric/petrol world, so with the introduction of the 2019 Volvo S60 we are starting to see this taking effect. The beautifully crafted new S60 is a lovely car; smaller than the S90 but big enough to be classed as an Audi A4, BMW 3-Series and Mercedes Benz C-Class rival. Outside styling is delightfully proportioned and curvaceous, while the inside detailing is svelte and masterful. The new Volvo S60 sedan is all class.
Nailing the design, Volvo’s understated elegance runs through all of the seven new models they have released since 2014. The ‘S’ in S60 could easily be referred to Volvo’s Sexy 60 because it has all the recent trademark Volvo design cues (Thor hammer driving lights, single chrome bar running across the grille and wrap around taillights) but in a superbly proportioned, sleek mid-size sedan.
The raving continues when you enter inside a new Volvo S60. Premium materials and style are part of what makes driving this new car a delight. Everything about the fit and finish, the choice of trimmings and the materials are quality. This is at the top of its class for interior design and workmanship. It has a ‘Minimalist’ look but that shows off the interior curves and detailing off all the more. A nice touch is that on each of the ‘oh-so’ comfortable leather seats you’ll find a small Swedish flag sewn into the stitching – a cool bit of bling.
Volvo S60 seats are first-rate comfortable, and you can drive many hours in this car before you’ll want to hop out for a leg stretch. Steering wheel adjustment and driver seat adjustment caters for people of all sizes and shapes – no problems here. Space in the front seats is excellent, and the storage bins in the doors are big enough for you to take a nice full bottle of cold water with you. The centre console has a big storage space under what doubles as the arm rest. Two USB ports are found in the centre console storage space, too, so as you can connect other devices as the need arises. Running down the passenger’s side of the centre console is another stylish storage compartment that has been sectioned for various things you might like to store in there – like your phone, house keys, and wallet – and there is also a 12V socket for powering other electronic devices.
A familiar 9-inch, tablet-styled touchscreen graces the centre of the dash, and as far as scrolling through the Apps it is quick and responsive to the touch. Features like DAB radio, Spotify, a 360 degree camera, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are features you’ll find are available on a new S60. The steering wheel, which is lovely to hold in your hands with its soft leather trim, boasts switchgear for many of the on-board infotainment features. An awesome sound system makes life in the S60 a treat.
Hop into the rear seats, and you’ll find that the leg and head room is excellent for its class. The seating comfort is well sculptured to connect and support the body well. Some useful storage bins in the rear doors, net pockets on the back of both of the front seats, isofix mounts, cup holders with a clever fold out design from the rear seat arm rest, more storage under the rear seat arm rest and a 12V socket on the rear of the centre console make for some nice practical features available to the rear seat passengers that are lucky enough to be riding inside the latest Volvo S60.
Boot space is good for the class and on a par with the BMW 3-Series. Inside the boot there is tethering hooks and a couple of handy storage spaces. The rear seats have a ski hatch for carrying long items like skis inside the Volvo S60 sedan. One feature that is missing on standard versions is the ability to split-fold or even entirely fold the rear seats flat. You can opt for it, however. Premium models get a powered boot lid.
Five star safety rated, the new Volvo S60 kicks some butt in this area. Automatic Emergency Braking is standard across the S60 range as is adaptive cruise control and run-off road mitigation technology.
Initially, powering the 2019 Volvo S60 comes down to one 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine that is available in three power outputs. Two hybrid versions are the speedsters. So, the T5 is the 2.0-litre petrol base model, and it offers very smooth, lusty power delivery, scampering through the 0-100 km/h in around seven seconds. The T8 models are hybrid versions and these deliver much quicker acceleration. The Hybrid T8 Polestar models get the uprated T8 engines and these are very quick cars with AWD. Different driving modes and options for adaptive suspension and AWD help ensure that the new S60 remains a satisfying drive.
The 2019 Volvo S60 is offered exclusively with its petrol engine and associated hybrids. It also comes in three trim levels known as Momentum (base level), Inscription (big on comfort and luxury), and R Design (sporty looks and features).
A new Volvo S60 looks magnificent. So would I get one? You bet ya!
