Love luxury and need a vehicle that doesn’t mind getting its feet muddy every now and then? The 2021 Volvo XC60 might be the vehicle that will suit you to a tee. Even entry level Momentum models have electric windows, heated seats, leather interiors and a large touchscreen with all the gizmos. Inscription models come with a premium trim and Nappa leather seats, while R-Design models get a sportier flavour. Pro version packages are available and are the top pick for luxury, where you’ll find features like massaging seats and all the best technology – even if you don’t need it!
Right throughout the cabin, the design of the new Volvo XC90 is exciting and refreshing. Few Crossover/SUV vehicles have the ability to blend luxury, style and functionality quite as well as Volvo can. Lexus comes to mind and Mercedes, but what I like about the way Volvo’s package is put together is that it appeals to the senses, feels extremely comfortable and delivers on quality, all with a very complete and well-appointed finish.
Practicality inside a 2021 Volvo XC60 is good. There is no shortage of decent storage space about the cabin and bottles easily fit inside the door bins. You’ll find that the glovebox is a whopper, perfect for all the extra chocolate, first-aid kit and lipsticks one needs for the journey. Head into the back seats, and I’m happy to announce that the seat comfort is superb and well sculptured to the body, along with boasting copious amounts of leg and head space. Three adults can easily fit across the back seats, and the seats are lovely, soft and supportive – the best in the business. Pockets on the back of the front seats are perfect for putting lap-tops or maps and toys inside. If there is just one or two people in the back seats, then the centre arm rest has a big storage space, a phone compartment, and cup-holders. You can opt for the panoramic glass roof which looks classy and doesn’t eat into head-room that much at all.
Some of the great new features that a 2021 Volvo XC60 has will impress. With Volvo Connect, you can locate your car in the car park – if you’ve forgotten where-abouts you parked it up. You can remotely start the car and warm up or cool down the cabin temperature before you finally arrive to drive off. You can set off the alarm and horn remotely. Bluetooth phone connection happens as soon as you arrive and enter the car. The wireless charge and connection makes life simple, and the apps on the phone can be used through the car’s infotainment system. By the way, Volvo sound systems are magnificent and among the best out there. Massaging seats make for a supreme luxury part piece.
There is absolutely no load lip present when it comes to loading stuff into the boot. The boot shape is nice and square; however, the outright space is down on rivals, though most people will find that the boot space in the 2021 Volvo XC60 will be more than big enough for carrying most things on a day-to-day basis. The stats reveal a 495-litre boot with the rear seats up, and 1455 litres when the rear seats are down. Folding the split-fold rear seats down is easy, and the floor is flat and long, ready for carrying copious amounts of luggage. A 12V socket is located in the boot, tethering points are present, a space saver wheel is under the boot floor, and there is a ski hatch for skis to slide through the centre of the rear seat.
You sit up nice and high in a Volvo XC60, so the view out from the driver’s seat is superb. The steering is perfectly weighted, so, when you’re running about town, the steering is delightfully light and easy to use. The driver’s seat is so comfortable, and, with steering wheel adjustment along with seat height combining, the perfect driving position is easily found for all. As far as ease of driving goes, there are few SUVs that feel as easy and as nice to drive as the 2021 Volvo XC60. You feel in total control, and the car feels nice, solid and safe – which it is! Premium models like the Inscription Pro get an air suspension that is carpet-like over rough roads. Lane keep assist and active cruise control are standard features that help make driving relaxing over the long haul.
Turbo-diesel, turbo-petrol and a plug-in hybrid are all available for powering the latest Volvo XC60 SUV. You’ll find that the hybrid is surprisingly quick, while all models are effortless and comfortable to drive over long journeys. So, the petrol 2.0-litre T5 packs 187 kW and 350Nm, while the petrol 2.0-litre T6 jumps these figures out to 246 kW and 440 Nm. The D4 diesel uses a healthy 192 kW and 400 Nm. The quickest in the XC60 stable is the 2.0-litre petrol turbo/supercharged T8 Polestar, which has a plug-in hybrid system with a combined output of 311 kW and 670 Nm. The T8 accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.2sec.
As you would expect, the 2021 Volvo Xc60 is as safe as they come. Five-star safety includes features like a driver air bag, front passenger air bag, front head air bag, rear head air bag, front side air bag, 4-wheel abs braking, 4-wheel disc brakes, brake assist, electronic stability control, daytime running lights, child safety locks, integrated turn signal mirrors, traction control, blind spot monitoring, auto-levelling headlights, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist. These are all things that come as standard on the new XC60 SUV.
AWD and an eight-speed auto are an excellent combination. Volvo has built a fine allrounder here, and it’s a bit smaller than the XC90 without skimping on any of the luxury.
