The first ever Volvo XC90 rolled out the Swedish manufacturer’s showrooms in the early noughties. Right from the word go, the XC90 was a big success. The design was that of a large SUV, it had on demand AWD, comfort and, of course, big Volvo safety. This latest generation remains true to the XC90’s roots, except in 2021 the very latest technology is onboard, the design is elegantly sweeter, and the engines that power the 2021 XC90 are much more powerful, efficient and environmentally friendly.
The 2021 Volvo XC90 SUV is the largest SUV that Volvo currently offers. You can expect to pay close to $100k for the base model and around $126k for the most expensive Plug-in Hybrid. That price range is actually quite reasonable when you consider that there are seven models to choose from, three trim levels, a range of engines and a load of gadgets and new technology as standard kit. Volvo provides a 5 year/unlimited km warranty and 5 years of roadside assistance, which is quite decent back-up.
Let’s look at the ride: Riding in the newest Volvo XC90 is special. Any of the models feel very premium and luxurious. The seats are typically “Volvo comfortable”, which means that you will enjoy hours of comfortable travelling. And, when you reach your destination, you can hop out of the vehicle still feeling good. If you needed to, you could easily climb back in the XC90 and head back to pick up the dog! There is nice composure to the big Volvo’s ride, while any bumps are soaked up brilliantly.
As we have become accustomed with modern Volvos, the equipment levels are sensational, and to put you in the picture, the standard 2021 Volvo XC90 B5 Momentum offers features that include: an alarm with motion sensors and tow away protection, central locking with key proximity, an engine immobiliser, active cornering/steering, automatic lights with electric level adjustment, high beam auto dipping, LED headlights, GPS (satellite navigation), LED daytime running lamps, front and rear fog lamps, rain sensors and automatic wipers, a powered tailgate, aux input sockets (mp3/cd/cassette), aux input USB sockets, Bluetooth connections, a multi-function infotainment control screen, Dab+ digital radio, a 10-speaker stereo, active noise cancellation, a digital driver’s display, a head-up information display, active cruise control with a speed limiter, tyre pressure sensors, adjustable 2nd and 3rd row seats, a driver and front passenger seat with electric lumbar support and memory, heated seats, an integrated child seat, ambient lighting, bottle holders, a cargo area with organiser shelving and dividers, a cargo blind, 4-zone climate control, cup holders throughout, parking distance control, floor mats, a glovebox that can be cooled or warmed, illuminated vanity mirrors, keyless start – key/fob proximity related, map reading lamps – for 1st and 2nd rows, a pollen filter front and rear, and electric windows – just to kick it off!
You can get the XC90 B5 Momentum in a range of colours, the brightest being a lovely Denim Blue. There is also Birch Light, Onyx Black, Pebble Grey, Savile Grey, Thunder Grey, Bright Silver, Crystal White and Ice White.
If you want to spruce up your standard model with some options, then there are heaps of things you can do. The options for the base model even include:
Inscription models add more luxury and finesse, while the R-Design are elegantly sporty. In seven-seat configuration, the 2021 Volvo XC90 offers the comfort with stacks of practicality, with 356 litres of boot space available. Fold the third row down via the simple lever and a whopping 1007 litres presents itself. Of course, the second row can also fold flat for even more space.
Powering the Volvo XC90 B5 Momentum is a 183 kW, 2.0-litre 95 Premium ULP engine. 350 Nm of torque is found at 4800 rpm. It is a Turbo Supercharged Intercooled motor that spins freely and delivers refined performance. The 8-speed sports automatic ensures you’re in the right gear whatever the demands, and you can tow a 750 kg unbraked trailer or a braked trailer of up to 2400 kg. All 2021 Volvo XC90 models are sensibly restricted to 180 km/h max.
The B6 models use an uprated version of the B5 and put out a healthy maximum of 220 kW and 420 Nm. Both the B6 and B5 variants will return you around 9 litres/100 km. The Volvo XC90 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid is the most expensive but boasts hybrid technology which can enable Volvo’s big SUV to return as little as 2-to-3 litres/100 km. Now, you can’t argue with that!
There are other alternatives to the Volvo XC90 that are worth a look: the Land Rover Discovery, Jaguar F-Pace and even an Audi, BMW or Lexus have some nice large SUVs in their line-ups. You could look to the Asian alternatives, which include Havaal, Kia and Hyundai models that impress for less. And then there is the good old Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Mazdas along with a nice Ford Everest and Jeep Grand Cherokee option as well, so the shopping list is vast with plenty of choice.
Few alternatives will do it quite as well as a 2021 Volvo XC90, however. The complete package is a winning combination.
