2024 Audi A6 Allroad Wagon

If you want a really posh wagon, with Quattro (4WD) underpinnings to take you places off the road, in much the same way as a Subaru Outback, then look no further than the stylish and elegant new Audi A6 Allroad Quattro.  This is the type of luxury vehicle that isn’t as big as a boxy SUV or as large as a serious 4×4, but it will impress you with the way it can happily venture down a side track for that beachside picnic/surf, scamper along gravel roads, and cruise up to the snowfields.  It is comfortable, luxurious, and enjoyable to drive.

The Audi A6 Allroad has a taller stance than its A6 Avant sibling, and it comes with some chunky, rugged black wheel-arch protectors and silver bumper and sill inserts that give it a bit of a tougher appearance and meaningful protection for when you explore down a side road.  Added to this a fantastically smooth seven-speed Quattro drivetrain, and the blend is perfect for adventure.  Boot space is decent, so you can easily scamper away for the weekend, kids in tow, with all the luggage you’ll need for that hiking trip.

Interior-wise, the A6 Allroad’s styling is elegant and even a little restrained across the dash.  The majority of the car’s controls, like the climate control and driving modes, are adjusted via the touchscreen at the centre.  Thanks to Audi’s tidy design work, a lot of the switchgear that earlier Audis used to have has been done away with and incorporated into the modern appearance.  The central display is 8.8 inches in size, and it boasts features like satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and even onboard Wi-Fi. Audi’s also boasts a virtual cockpit (digital driver’s display) with an analogue gauge cluster design.  A larger 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen is also an option.  There is no shortage of premium sound, as Audi provides a 10-speaker audio system as a standard feature.  This system produces a more than adequate symphony of sound, but some buyers, no doubt, will want to upgrade to the 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D premium sound system.

Those seats feel as good as they look, and it is the ride comfort of the 2024 Audi A6 Allroad that is truly impressive.  Long journeys in an A6 Allroad are walk in the park, with the effortless engine performance making travelling very relaxing.  The 2024 Audi A6 Allroad wagon is powered by a strong turbocharged 3.0-litre V-6 petrol motor that produces as much as 250 kW of power and 502 Nm of torque.  A seven-speed automatic transmission and Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive back up the performance and offer the refined, smooth gear changes.  This engine is easily available overseas, but I’m sure if you twist Audi’s arm it could come to Australia easy enough.  Though the Allroad has been electronically limited to a top speed of around 200 km/h, it still has the muscle to see off the quarter mile in 13.8 seconds and sprint from 0–100 km/h in 5.5 seconds.

The mainstay model you can buy here in Australia at the drop of a hat is the Audi A6 Allroad 45 TDI, which runs with a 3.0-litre turbo diesel with as much as 600 Nm of torque on tap.  It, too, is built for the fast lane, though everything about it makes it a perfect long-haul tourer.  The 0–100 km/h sprint time of 6.5 seconds, along with a top speed of 250 km/h and a fuel economy averaging below 6.0 litres/100 km are impressive.

Whichever engine you run with, this luxurious adventure wagon boasts adaptive air suspension, meaning it can be adjusted for varying road conditions, ensuring that even the largest of bumps can be easily smoothed out.  The lower setting is perfect for fast B-roads, where the Allroad hunkers down nicely and grips confidently through tight corners.  The air suspension can also be raised up for more ground clearance in order to allow for driving over uneven terrain.  No, I can’t really call the Audi A6 Allroad Wagon a true off-roading machine, but the Allroad has been designed to perform light offroading duties.  When the weather conditions pack up, making the roads all slippery, this is the type of car we want to be driving.

Two trim levels are available, with the base model offering plenty of the best goodies.  The navigation, Audi’s cool digital driver’s display, a panoramic sunroof, beautiful leather upholstery, the Bang & Olufsen stereo, the 360-degree exterior camera system, and the snazzy set of 20-inch rims tick all the right boxes for me.  As you would expect, the Prestige model costs a few grand more, but it does come with more driver assistance features.  A remote parking feature and black faux-suede headlining are a couple of things that come to mind.  Both of the models come with 5-star safety (the best you can get), so things like automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control come as standard for both trim levels.

What more can I say?  If you are wanting a luxury AWD wagon with loads of performance and refinement, then one of the comfortable 2024 Audi A6 Allroads will happily take you on many special journeys around Australia.
