A Wonderful Rousing X-factor drive – maybe that’s what Subaru had in mind when they labelled the fastest of the Subaru Impreza cars the WRX. The newest of the WRX lineage is certainly impressive. One of the noticeable improvements in the new car is that the level of refinement has gone up another notch.
One of the other aspects of the new WRX that has evolved is that the exterior design is more in keeping with a car that offers so much exciting performance. The more curvaceous body, and more pronounced panel indentations, give a more muscular and powerful appearance. Scooping in the panelling aids the way the light plays on the surface of the WRX’s skin, always looking good and appealing. A key feature of the new WRX design is the bolder and more purposeful front headlights, angular nose, massive bonnet scoop and striking LED headlights with a halogen high-beam. Turn your attention to the rear of the vehicle and you’ll appreciate the new LED rear lights as well as the rear spoiler and defining shark fin antenna. If you are the driver travelling in front of the WRX, you’ll be looking at an aggressive approach from the WRX behind. It won’t be there for long, as in a moment the Subaru Impreza WRX will swish by in a flash. Always a captivating part of a car is the wheel rims, and Subaru have the design just right with the new 17-inch charcoal alloy wheels with plenty of struts to draw the attention.
Stylish inside as well, the new Subaru WRX sets a new standard for attractive, sporty designs and technology. An advanced Multi-Function Display has information on many aspects of the car’s performance and progress. A black interior captures the contrasting red detailing that is used inside the cabin. The gauges and the stitching of the new sports seats are classy and eye-catching.
Most people inside the new WRX will want to be in the driver’s seat or at least be dreaming they are. If you don’t happen to be the lucky one, the room inside the cabin has been enhanced and improved in the new WRX model. There is more leg, elbow and shoulder room and the feel of the car being more luxurious is a prominent feature. A larger boot swallows more luggage – which has to be a practical bonus.
Subaru has created a new version of the powerful 2.0-litre Direct Injection Turbocharged Boxer engine to sit in the WRX models. The STi versions get the bigger 2.5-litre engine. The 2.0-litre Boxer is one gutsy motor that loves to be played with. There is plenty of torque across the range, better power delivery and healthier fuel economy thanks to Subaru’s Dual Active Valve Control System (DAVCS) which varies the inlet camshaft timing. Drive this beauty on a road that allows you to extend the engine to its fullest performance, and the hefty 350 Nm is ready from 2400 rpm through to 5200 rpm. You can imagine the grins!
Actually, WRX stands for the illustrious motorsport heritage that Subaru has carved out of history with the WRC competition in the Impreza WRX models. Sport performance doesn’t get much more exciting when you add AWD traction in a trim car with a powerful engine. I guess that’s why Subaru does so well in WRC comps. The new Subaru WRX is an exciting drive with better cabin space and comfort. STi versions are available; in fact do take a look at the new Subaru WRX STi review from Private Fleet.
