For 2017 we’re seeing a number of the big name brands producing another set of new models for 2017. Subaru introduces their new Impreza Hatch, and from first glance it looks good. A broader nose, a longer wheelbase and pronounced wheel arches keep the new Impreza interesting. There are hints of a Hyundai i30 in the way this hatch looks, so the Impreza lines are clean and attractive.
The basic Impreza Hatch is called the 2.0i Hatch, the well-equipped Impreza is known as the 2.0-L Hatch, while the loaded-with-kit Impreza is the 2.0i Premium Hatch. Want a sporty flavour? Inside the new Impreza, the space has increased in dimensions – thanks solely to the extended wheelbase.
The new Subaru Impreza Hatch is a safe not-so-small hatch. Ticking all the right boxes for the five-star crash test result from ANCAP means that you’re in safe hands. Each of the 2017 Impreza models mentioned above have a full array of excellent safety features to make it really handy in the event of a crash. Head rests are standard for rear seat passengers. Child seat anchor points keep the little ones safe and the airbags extend the entire side of the hatchback. Daytime running lights keep you seen by other motorists and pedestrians, and dusk-sensing headlights sense when the light of day is too dark for driving without the lights being on – so they switch on automatically. A post-collision safety system is a passive safety feature that will automatically activate the brakes after the airbag sensors have detected that a collision is occurring during the initial impact of a crash. The system sets out to prevent further impact damage occurring from the car continuing to move after the initial crash phase. An engine immobilizer, remote anti-theft alarm system, stability control, a tyre pressure monitoring system, traction control, 4-wheel ABS, EBA, three-point safety belts in the rear and rear door child safety locks are standard features across the range.
Subarus have a cult following – at least amongst my wife’s siblings – and this enthusiasm has been passed onto our son, who is now the owner of a tidy used Subaru Impreza hatch. They have built up a bit of a reputation for being a good solid buy, particularly when new, as being a reliable and solid car that will run happily for many care-free miles. Having the AWD feature is a big bonus and remains a feature that is loved by the ski bunny! Driving enthusiasts also love the fact that the Subaru Impreza has done consistently very well in the WRC. Cruise control, electric power steering, a reverse camera, a steering wheel that has cruise control and audio buttons mounted on the wheel, cabin air filtration, air conditioning, dual vanity mirrors, keyless ignition, a leather steering wheel, and cool looking turn signal indicators set into the side mirrors. Premium models get a few extra features that include a six-speaker audio system, elegant alloys, an electric sunroof, blind spot detection and satellite navigation. Sport Impreza models gain a nice set of sporty, wider 18-inch alloys, and the full array of spoilers and side skirts.
Powering the new Impreza is an economical flat 4, 2.0-litre, petrol- fed engine. The Impreza drives with plenty of control, and on the road feels much like a larger car feels on the road – thanks to the well-weighted steering and well-sorted chassis. Nimble, grippy handling is satisfying and enjoyable. Out on the open road, the engine is relaxed at the open road limits, and cruising motorways means you’ll enjoy fuel consumption at a rate of just over 6 litres/100 km. Town and city running drinks a little more juice (up to 9 litres/100 km). CVT gearing keeps the new Impreza Hatch ultra-smooth when accelerating.
Choosing the Subaru Impreza Hatch over any of the main rivals is always going to be a wise choice.
