Looking for a fresh new start the Suzuki Baleno for 2017 looks way better, feels solid and has plenty of interior space.  The engine is zippy, while the fuel economy remains constantly impressive for the whole range of city and country drives.

Looking on, the new Baleno has lots going for it; the aerodynamic shape is slippery yet spacious, the styling is pleasant without being obnoxious, and the crimping on the side panelling looks good and attractive.  A touch of chrome around the Suzuki logo, the spoked wheels and the elongated diamond headlights are looking good.  Head around the rear of the new Baleno, and the styling finishes off with a nice set of oversized tail lamps and a small boot spoiler to complete the clean Baleno looks.

Open the driver’s door and slip inside, and the dash is very elegant, with a chrome border around the central dash area where all the important technology becomes accessible to the front occupant’s fingertips.  The luxury model has plenty of features like steering wheel controls for audio, bluetooth and cruise control.  Nice clear analogue dials are fresh with the white figures lit up against a blue background.  A dark grey quality plastic dash keeps the overall dash fascia looking elegant and upmarket.  Audio, phone, satellite navigation and smartphone connectivity (for Apple CarPlay) are all standard items on the new Suzuki Baleno.  Remote keyless entry, automatic climate control air-conditioning, power windows, steering-mounted, FM/MP3/CD, AUX, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, reverse parking sensors, and a rear wiper and demister feature in all Baleno models.  Automatic headlamps, alloy wheels, front fog lamps and a reversing camera are a few of the features you can find in the premium Baleno GLX.

Dimensionally, the Suzuki Baleno positions itself as a larger hatchback than the Swift, without having the interior space of a Kizashi.  So what you really get is a very roomy interior for its class with plenty of rear space for an adult’s legs, head and shoulders – three pairs in fact.  Luggage space is much better than in a Swift by comparison and, again, this sets the Baleno up well when looking at rivals in the same class.  A Honda Jazz, Hyundai i20 and VW Polo can’t match the Baleno for leg room and luggage carrying ability.  With a deep boot that can swallow an admirable 355 litres of luggage, you have more than just a shopping trolley here.  When the rear seats are placed flat, there is 756 litres available to fill.

An important area that new car buyers are wanting a new car to do well in is that of safety.  The latest Baleno comes up good in this area.  Not sparing on safety features, the dual airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, an anti-theft security system and front seat belt pre-tensioners and force limiters are some of the features that the 2017 Suzuki Baleno provides.

On the road, the new Baleno GL ride is commendably pliant when running over rough city streets.  Holding it together on the corners with useful levels of grip is balanced with a comfortable rather than sporting chassis.  The steering is light and easy.  Power delivery is via a flexible 1.4-litre motor that puts out 68 kW at 6000 rpm and 130 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm.  The four-speed auto slips cleanly between ratios and is happy enough to kick down when the drive requires it to.  Fuel economy should be good for under 6 litres/100 km most of the time.  A five-speed gearbox option is also available for the Baleno GL.  If smooth, relaxed transport with plenty of space is what you are after, then the GL model will do a great job.

If more power is needed, then there is the very spicy little Baleno Turbo that is punchy and quick.  You drive this model with a six-speed auto that keeps this little engine in the fun zone.  Peak power of 82 kW and a torque figure of 160 Nm from 1500 rpm is what sets this apart and makes the Baleno a driver’s car.  The zippy nature of the small turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol motor is very likeable.

Not overly sporty in character, the Suzuki Baleno GL is a roomy, efficient and comfortable hatchback to drive.  If it’s performance you’re after, then the Suzuki Baleno GLX Turbo delivers the goods.  Offering both the GL and GLX Turbo for sale in Australia, ensures the Baleno has a wider market appeal becoming a bit of a handful for the competition.
