Volkswagen’s 2017 Golf Wagon is a gem of a car to drive. As a wagon it has the practicality of being able to carry a useful load of luggage as well as the kids, cruise effortlessly with a nice ride and offer good accommodation if you happen to be a passenger. Needless to say, the driver’s seating is well catered for.
Current VW cars are claiming for themselves quite a stylish etiquette amidst a brand of cars in the market that don’t always live up to expectations which demand a mid-size wagon that can perform, offer plenty of practicality and also look the goods in a world where stylishness matters. Volkswagen is creating an elegant series of new cars for buyers to enjoy and be proud of; making wagons that will match their requirements. It can be said that the Volkswagen Golf hasn’t always been the most exciting car to look at over the years, so the design team at VW have sought to change the practical Golf flavour to a flavour that has some nice melting moments where the taste sensations are part of the tingly and enjoyable new Golf driving experience. The lengthy roof line swoops gracefully over the passenger compartment and tapers nicely over the luggage compartment which boasts one of the better capacities. A neat little roof spoiler, alloy roof rails, a high waistline and chunky wheel arches help give the new VW Golf Wagon visual credit. A set of attractive alloy wheel designs aids the new Golf Wagon’s appeal with 16-inch Toronto alloy wheels as standard and the 17-inch Karlskoga alloys for Highline Golf Wagon models. You can make a bold statement with 18-inch Sebring alloys with the optional R-Line package, if you desire.
Softening the ride are some sumptuous seats that provide excellent comfort for long drives. These are upholstered in a premium cloth trim for base models, while Highline models offering a sexy set of leather sport seats. In the Golf rear is an impressive amount of leg room for adult passengers. Practical load carrying ability is what makes this wagon very handy to have around the home. When the 60:40 split rear seats are in place, there is 605 litres ready to be filled. Flatten the rear seats, and the luggage space grows to 1620 litres. This is massively more than you’d find in a new Toyota Corolla Wagon – just saying!
Interior design for new VW vehicles has also become luxurious and trendy. Conclusive lists of premium technological features, softened and curvaceous dash panelling, excellent air-conditioning units with zoned climate control for premium models, top audio equipment and even Smartphone linkage technology are some of the enjoyable features you’re going to enjoy on your new 2017 VW Golf Wagon. For an interior to be practical, it also has to be comfortable and durable. Supportive seats featuring premium cloth fabric are complimented by a premium panel trim in base models. The spacious new Golf Wagon cabin includes large upper and lower twin glove boxes, bottle holders in all doors and a centre console with cup holders. A retractable and removable tonneau cover can be adjusted to keep items out of sight in the rear luggage compartment. There is even a very useful storage box under the luggage floor area that really floats my boat. You can put quite a lot of useful, but hardly used, nick-knacks in this space to keep the main luggage space clutter free. There is also a 12V power socket in the luggage compartment.
The 2017 VW Golf Wagon has the latest in new generation infotainment complete with smartphone glass appearance. The Trendline Golf Wagon includes the Composition Media 8-inch display screen. Comfortline and Highline variants get the Discover Media 8-inch Display. If you want to, you can opt for the ultimate Infotainment Package (available on Comfortline and Highline variants only) where you’ll receive the 9.2-inch Discover Pro Display that includes new intuitive touchscreen technology and 10GB of available storage. Also, this new Golf Wagon comes with App-Connect2 where you can access your smartphone’s interface, selected apps, maps, and music through App-Connect2 on your console’s touchscreen – using Apple CarPlay MirrorLink and Android Auto interfaces. This technology might sound intimidating but in practise is very easy to use. You can always ask your friendly teenager!
You could say that the luggage compartment in a new Golf Wagon is rather gluttonous, but with a new turbo-diesel and petrol engine available you couldn’t say that the engines have any hint of a consumption problem. Two engine variants present are: a 1.4-litre TSI Turbocharged Petrol and a 2.0-litre TDI Turbocharged Diesel. The 110kW TSI petrol engine is a highly responsive turbocharged 1.4 litre engine, which pumps out 110 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque – a statement of how swift performance doesn’t always have to come from a big engine. With a super-low fuel consumption of less than 6 litres/100 km, you’ll have yourself quite a wagon to enjoy. The TSI engine is linked to a 7-speed DSG auto gearbox. On the other hand, the 2.0-litre TDI has a wonderful flow of torque from the inline turbocharged direct injection diesel engine that produces 110 kW of power and 340 Nm of torque. Equipped with a 6-speed auto DSG gearbox, the TDI boasts exceptional fuel economy of around 5.0 litres/100km. The two engines are smooth and flexible, offering excellent open road cruising along with efficient city economy. If you’re thinking of carrying a full load regularly, then the TDI will probably be the better choice for you with its extra wide band of punchy pulling power.
Conclusive safety features have resulted in the new VW Golf Wagon obtaining a five-star safety rating – a result that any new-car buyer will want to hear. Buy a new 2017 Volkswagen Golf Wagon and you’ll get a 3 year unlimited km warranty and 3 years of roadside assistance. Things don’t get much better than that! For a well sorted medium-size wagon, the Golf has you covered.
