Volkswagen’s 2017 Golf Wagon is a gem of a car to drive.  As a wagon it has the practicality of being able to carry a useful load of luggage as well as the kids, cruise effortlessly with a nice ride and offer good accommodation if you happen to be a passenger.  Needless to say, the driver’s seating is well catered for.

Softening the ride are some sumptuous seats that provide excellent comfort for long drives.  These are upholstered in a premium cloth trim for base models, while Highline models offering a sexy set of leather sport seats.  In the Golf rear is an impressive amount of leg room for adult passengers.  Practical load carrying ability is what makes this wagon very handy to have around the home.  When the 60:40 split rear seats are in place, there is 605 litres ready to be filled.  Flatten the rear seats, and the luggage space grows to 1620 litres.  This is massively more than you’d find in a new Toyota Corolla Wagon – just saying!

The 2017 VW Golf Wagon has the latest in new generation infotainment complete with smartphone glass appearance.  The Trendline Golf Wagon includes the Composition Media 8-inch display screen.  Comfortline and Highline variants get the Discover Media 8-inch Display.  If you want to, you can opt for the ultimate Infotainment Package (available on Comfortline and Highline variants only) where you’ll receive the 9.2-inch Discover Pro Display that includes new intuitive touchscreen technology and 10GB of available storage.  Also, this new Golf Wagon comes with App-Connect2 where you can access your smartphone’s interface, selected apps, maps, and music through App-Connect2 on your console’s touchscreen – using Apple CarPlay MirrorLink and Android Auto interfaces.  This technology might sound intimidating but in practise is very easy to use.  You can always ask your friendly teenager!

You could say that the luggage compartment in a new Golf Wagon is rather gluttonous, but with a new turbo-diesel and petrol engine available you couldn’t say that the engines have any hint of a consumption problem.  Two engine variants present are: a 1.4-litre TSI Turbocharged Petrol and a 2.0-litre TDI Turbocharged Diesel.  The 110kW TSI petrol engine is a highly responsive turbocharged 1.4 litre engine, which pumps out 110 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque – a statement of how swift performance doesn’t always have to come from a big engine.  With a super-low fuel consumption of less than 6 litres/100 km, you’ll have yourself quite a wagon to enjoy.  The TSI engine is linked to a 7-speed DSG auto gearbox.  On the other hand, the 2.0-litre TDI has a wonderful flow of torque from the inline turbocharged direct injection diesel engine that produces 110 kW of power and 340 Nm of torque.  Equipped with a 6-speed auto DSG gearbox, the TDI boasts exceptional fuel economy of around 5.0 litres/100km. The two engines are smooth and flexible, offering excellent open road cruising along with efficient city economy.  If you’re thinking of carrying a full load regularly, then the TDI will probably be the better choice for you with its extra wide band of punchy pulling power.
