Costing between $30 and $40 k, Renaults pitches its new 2017 Megane Sedan against other compact family sedans in a bid to gain a greater market share in what is a hotly contested market. The 2017 Megane Sedan is a likeable, roomy sedan with plenty of features and comfort to make any journey enjoyable and trendy.
Small families will love the practicality, comfort and safety that this small sedan provides. I say small, but really inside the cabin it is quite a roomy affair. The boot can hold 503 litres of luggage, and with the rear seat backing folded flat, this grows to 987 litres. It is very easy to flip the rear seat backing down flat, and split folding makes for plenty of options when it comes to luggage of varying sizes.
The comfortable seating is backed up with dual-zone climate control, so all occupants in the latest Renault Megane sedan are going to be able to enjoy a relaxed journey. The air-conditioning also boasts a toxicity sensor, so it will adjust itself accordingly when outside pollutants become apparent. Front seat occupants get really comfortable height adjustable seats. A 12 V socket is available in the front and rear occupant space allowing for other multimedia devices to be carried on a journey. This latest generation Renault Megane gets the R-LINK 2 satellite navigation and multimedia system which offers easy access to maps, audio and communication systems. The Renault Megane Zen Sedan comes with the 7-inch touch display screen, while the Intens model gains a larger 8.7-inch screen. Music lovers will love the eight-speaker surround sound quality, and Bluetooth phone pairing with audio streaming will keep the entertainment live and fun for all.
Zen models get the smart carbon fabric upholstery for the seats, and if you love leather, the Intens will oblige with what is a stunning leather interior. The leather wrapped multi-function steering wheel is height and tilt adjustable, so with the seat adjustment being so good you’ll be right ready for the road.
Safety is another of Renault’s strong points. The 2017 Renault Megane Sedan is very strong in an impact of any great magnitude, and the car is equipped with the full array of modern passive and active safety features that you’d expect. Even pelvis and chest airbags are standard. Hill Start Assist and an electronic parking brake are standard. Parking in tight places is a breeze with front, rear and side sensors, along with a rear view camera, as standard items. The Itens Megane comes with an easy park assist system which has a few more features. Cruise control with a speed limiter, and emergency braking are items that are there to keep you safe. Adaptive cruise control is available in the Intens model.
Out on the open road, the Renault is a joy to drive. There is plenty of power available from the small and efficient 1.2-litre Turbo motor which is petrol fed. Nice handling skills, a refined ride and easy cruising make for one of the better compact sedan driving experiences on the market. Both models come linked to the effective gearing set-up of the seven-speed dual clutch EDC automatic gearbox. You can expect average fuel consumption to be around 6 litres/100 km.
The Renault Megane does come with plenty of kit and electronic doo dads on-board, so the car weighs in as a fairly hefty compact sedan. This added weight does reflect on the 0-100 km/h dash which can be done in a little less than 11 seconds. In the real world you won’t notice this too much, as the car knows what gear it needs to be in quickly and will respond accordingly – particularly out on the open road when you need to pass slower moving traffic. A maximum speed of 200 km/h is pretty sensational for such a small engine.
Being the new Renault Megane Sedan, the car features the same front end as the hatchback along with a similar side profile up to the rear doors. The stationary window in the rear door is just a little bit taller, with the waistline at the rear sitting a little lower than on the hatchback version. It’s at the rear of the car that the sedan makes its own design with a clean set of wrap around taillights looking great. From any angle, the new Megane sedan is a stylish car, and the big news is that the sedan also features a panoramic roof.
Up against the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus and Mazda 3, you’ve got to say that after sampling the Megane you will be impressed with its comfort, space and packaging in what is a good-looking, Euro sedan.
