2018 Range Rovers are pretty high-tech already, but when a new PHEV model becomes available they become quite the remarkable vehicle for getting around. Let’s take a closer look, but first what’s PHEV all about?
When a vehicle has PHEV capability it becomes a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). This is a hybrid electric vehicle whose battery can be recharged by plugging it in to an external source of electric power as well by its on-board engine (commonly petrol or diesel) and generator. So, this is exactly what Range Rover has introduced into their mix of very grand and nice new Range Rover flagships. Actually, two models are known, and they are named the Range Rover PHEV and the Range Rover Sport PHEV.
So, does the Range Rover PHEV suffer in the performance department in any way? Absolutely not, because having PHEV as a feature enhances the fuel efficiency about town and in off-road situations where low speeds are required. Range Rover has the brand new PHEV 400e engine pumping out a combined motor force of a lusty 297 kW of power. This is serious muscle, which is more than capable of shoving the big luxury SUV from standstill to 100 km/h in less than 7 seconds. A top speed of 220 km/h keeps things moving along rapidly if the need arises, in true magical Range Rover form.
Range Rover claim that the PHEV P400e is fully capable of managing most short commutes in full Electric Vehicle (EV) mode, with a range of up to 51 km – though in the real world this will probably be a little less. Both the new Range Rover PHEV and Range Rover Sport PHEV run with the same motor, it’s just that the Sport looks a little racier with one or two sporty additions to the design – bigger alloys for one.
So what’s a new PHEV Rangie like to drive? Really, really nice! When in full electric mode the ride is carpet like and silent. With the interior being so lavish and comfortable you truly are riding in kingly opulence. Electric seats are heated and provide full adjustment for that perfect fit in the front. The steering wheel is adjustable in rake and height, so you are exceptionally comfortable if you’re the driver. Rear seat passengers have class leading leg room and electronic seat adjustment as well. Being a wireless hot spot, Bluetooth savvy and infotainment ripe the cabin can become a major working office, relaxation and entertainment zone, or communications centre. There are TVs available for rear seat passengers to enjoy a film when in travel mode. Auxiliary ports throughout the cabin make for easy power connection for any other electronic devices you’ll require for the trip ahead. Cup holders and storage compartments are aplenty in the new Range Rover PHEV. You can even pre-heat or pre-cool the cabin without starting the engine before you get into the vehicle, and still retain a full electric range – almost too nice!
Being the newest Range Rover model for 2018 the PHEV offers an improved infotainment system, with twin 10-inch touchscreens, and wider seats – made possible by the relocation of the controls to the doors.
There’s a port in the front grille for carrying out the recharge, and it’s easy-enough to do. The shortest time you can charge the Range Rover PHEV in is 2 hours and 45 minutes. With a domestic plug it can take about 7 hours and 30 minutes.
On the road, the Range Rover PHEV feels powerful and very commanding at the helm. Road holding is excellent and ride comfort sublime. There is always power in reserve for quick acceleration, and cruising at high speed is effortless and serene.
With Porsche already offering a luxury hybrid Cayenne model, and Audi their Q7 e-tron, Range Rover is one of only a few big luxury SUVs to provide this sort of PHEV power. Very nice and difficult to walk passed; the new 2018 Range Rover PHEV is not your ordinary and conventional type. It’s got to be good for you!
