BMW X2 Diesel

Taking the first opportunity to drive something new is an exciting prospect, especially with the added bonus of having BMW’s latest X car in the lime light.  Given that there are three X2 models to choose from, the one that will be on most buyers’ radars will be the one-and-only BMW xDrive20d compact SUV.  This is a stylish small SUV with all the latest furnishings and, of course, the smooth and efficient turbo-diesel motor.

Yes, it’s small and yes’ it looks chic.  There is no doubt that the lower roofline and compact length do gel nicely together with the pretty face that boasts a kidney grille that is wider at the bottom than at the top.  Flared wheel arches house a nice-looking standard alloy rim – their sizes from 18-up to 20-inches.  The car makes a good showing of itself parked up at the curb.  Not only do the chunky coupe-lines catch the attention, but the nice crisp exterior colours are beautiful to behold.  What keeps this chunky compact SUV extra interesting is the narrow, angular C-pillar that harks back to the old sexy CS models of the 1970s.  The rear roof M spoiler adds to the little X’s sporty image, and so along with the spoiler are things like accentuated side skirts, flared wheel arches in Frozen Grey, three large air inlets under the kidney grille and twin exhausts which make the M-Package X-Line X2 a hot-looker.  You know what the good news is?  The 2018 BMW X2 xDrive20d model already comes standard with the full M Sport X Package for exterior and interior style.

Some optional extras you can add for your own individuality would be the Style Plus Package which equips your X2 Diesel with 20-inch M light alloy wheels, double-spoke style 717 M rims with run flat tyres, a special metallic paint job and a panoramic glass sunroof.

Take a moment to look inside the new BMW X2 20d cabin, and the Cloth ‘Hexagon’ Alcantara Anthracite upholstery looks great with its contrast stitching in Yellow.  You have specially contoured sport seats for driver and front passenger, and you get an M leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons for phone, audio, cruise control etc.  Even the interior trim boasts a special Aluminium Hexagon Anthracite design, and the door sill is finished with ‘M’ logos.  A Comfort package adds leather and heated seats functions.

Each new BMW X2 model does come equipped with a standard set of features.  The instrument panel boasts a high-resolution 5.7 TFT touch display screen.  There are numerous storage compartments throughout the cabin, and even 12V power sockets are found in the rear seat centre console.  Smartphone connectivity and charging is a modern feature which is done wirelessly to the car’s system which also has voice control.  A DAB+ digital radio tuner works the 100 W, six-speaker sound system.  Finding your way across town or country is easy with BMW’s latest satellite navigation that is displayed on a 6.5-inch colour display.  The central control system has touch functionality, and an iDrive controller.

On the safety front, the compact BMW X2 SUV has all the five-star safety goodies that you would expect.  Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Braking Assistant, Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) are all standard features.  The cruise control works very well and offers an automatic braking function.  Lane Departure and Forward Collision Warning are there to keep the progress smooth, safe and relaxed.  You also have a rear view camera, Park Distance Control (PDC) front and rear, and Park Assist – which are all very good features, particularly if you lack parking lot confidence.

On a practical note, the new BMW X2 boot space (470 litres) is not huge by SUV standards but it’s still more than you’ll find in a BMW 1-series car, and the rear seats have a 40:20:40 split feature.  As far as leg room goes; the front-seat passengers are well off, but if you boast tall timber then it’s gonna be a little tight in the rear.  That said, the seats are well made and contoured nicely for support.

BMW’s new X2 Diesel has plenty of get-up-and-go, and, in fact, there is a wide spread of lusty torque between 1500 and 3000 rpm.  Linked to an eight speed auto, the BMW X2 xDrive20d applies the power down to the road with ease via the AWD setup.  BMW’s drive mode selector has Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport to choose between.  Plant the right foot from a standstill, and the X2 Diesel remains very BMW in its DNA.  There is always the ability to gain speed rapidly, allowing for the small BMW X2 xDrive20d to run through the 0-100 km/h sprint in around 8 seconds.  In Europe there are some other engines on offer, but for now in Australia we have the choice of two petrol versions (1.8 and 2.0 litre), and this sweet 2.0-litre turbo-diesel which will return less than 6 litres/100 km on most everyday drives.

Lining up against the Jaguar E-Pace and Volvo XC40, the competition is stiff for the new X2.  Some of the nice bits about the new BMW X2 Diesel is that it offers a classy interior while boasting strong diesel performance and handling skills.  I’ll let you be the judge!
