Ford Endura SUV

I’m pretty excited to see the new Ford Endura becoming available.  Not only is it a roomy compact SUV, comfortable to drive, high tech and safe; but the Endura also boasts a fantastic 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine with excellent torque and power outputs to get the job done.  This is a nice size SUV for the growing family, commuting to-and-fro to work, and for getting yourself away for a well-earned long weekend.

Ford’s new Endura seats five, and if you happen to be in the rear seats the space for a mid-size SUV is pretty good for tall adults.  Comfort has certainly been a high priority for the new Endura designers, so you’ll find the front seats tremendously comfortable thanks to their big size and form-fitting support.  Front seat occupants get 10-way electronic adjustment for their heated/cooled seats.  Having loads of comfort ensures that the Endura is the perfect long-distance traveller.  You are up nice and high, so the driving position delivers a commanding view of the road ahead – and with this driving position comes a feeling of safety and security.

Steering feel and ride comfort are important gauges for how a car will satisfy over the ownership period.  Ford’s new Endura is very modern and incorporates all of Ford’s expertise in chassis performance.  A new Endura has a secure steering feel that provides dynamic and crisp handling response for the sporty driver.  If you are familiar with how the current Mondeo cars ride and steer, then the Endura SUV has that same quality but in a higher SUV guise.

Having a decent on-demand all-wheel drive system with the ability to give all of the drive to either the front or rear axle depending on traction requirements, the Ford Endura is a handy SUV to have to get you to the ski slopes, over a wet field or onto the beach.  Don’t expect Range Rover 4×4 performance by any stretch of the imagination, but there are some skills available to the Endura for performing light off-road stages of the journey.

Getting decent performance from a small engined SUV with a weight of around 2 tonnes was always going to be challenging – that said, Ford’s 2.0-litre diesel has turbo power for creating a maximum of 154 kW.  The maximum 450 Nm of torque comes on song at 2000 rpm, and this is grunty stuff that’s channelled by a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox for getting the power to the road.  A Sport mode is standard, and in this mode the engine revs are held for longer – keeping the big Endura up-at-the-ready for longer.  Size doesn’t always equate to vigour!

Ford rates the Endura to deliver 5.9 litres/100 km on average – but this is purely idealistic so expect real world figures to be somewhat higher.  Everyone’s driving style differs to some respect.  You can tow up to 2000 kg braked.

In the metal the 2019 Ford Endura looks imposing and has nice style for the street.  Top spec models boast sporty features like 20 or 21-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, an 8.0-inch Sync3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated and cooled front and rear seats, a power tailgate, automatic windscreen wipers and bi-xenon headlights with automatic high beam, panoramic glass roof, daytime running lights, USB phone charging, leather interior, semi-automatic parking, heated steering wheel and remote start.  You also can get the funky 12-speaker sound system with plenty of good vibes for muso ears.  The Ford Endura has Bluetooth and auxiliary inputs while also boasting DAB+ digital radio.

For some reason the black exterior paintwork looks pretty mean – maybe it’s the way the dark colour accentuates the Endura’s sharp exterior lines and shape.

Essentially the new Ford Endura is a sizeable SUV with not a whole lot of off-roading skill.  That’s ok because there are lots of people in the world who are happy toddling about on main roads every day who won’t need serious 4×4 traction but will love the size, safety and comfort that this SUV provides its occupants.  With a flick of a switch the Endura can go from offering 602 litres of luggage space to a capacious 1788 litres with the rear seats flat.

Taking on other similarly sized SUV performers, the 2019 Ford Endura takes on the Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota Highlander and Skoda Kodiaq at their own game.
