Now for something a little bit different and even a little risqué! Who’s not going to enjoy a little life in the fast lane – by which I mean life in a new Porsche 718 GTS! Looks alone for the new 2018 Porsche 718 GTS are racy and ever so sexy. It’s hard not to get excited with the low profile 2-seater Coupe/Roadster styling.
If you can keep up with one of these 718 GTS quicks, you’ll be treated to a view of the very squat back end with huge bulging rear wheel arches, slim line LED tail lights joined with a red light panel, and cute/racy twin exhaust outlets located centre-profile, right low-down and set into the black panel as part of the bumper design. It might be easier to wait till the 718 GTS is parked curb side, where you’ll appreciate the gorgeous exterior design better. Walk around to the front and the 911-like front nose slopes sleekly forward beyond the protruding LED head lamps riding the curvaceous front wheel arches to create a sporty and fun flavour to the overall dynamic new Porsche 718 GTS styling.
Yes, the 2018 Porsche 718 GTS is quick. This is the model with the most powerful engine in the line-up. So, with a turbo power plant boasting 2.5-litre capacity and four-cylinders, the 718 GTS has at its disposable a tenacious 269 kW put down onto the road via the big set of rubber at the rear. A limited slip-differential ensures that maximum traction is achieved at all times – even in the wet. The full 420 Nm is enjoyed instantly from 1900 rpm all the way up to 5000 rpm – where it then passes the performance wave to the peak 269 kW at 6500 rpm. The result is an exhilarating drive, one that sees the 0-100 km/h dash done and dusted in 4.6 seconds with the standard gearbox, or 4.1 seconds with the Sports Chrono gearbox option. Top speed is a whopping 290 km/h, more than enough to hold polite conversation with a ZZR rider.
The 2018 Porsche 718 GTS has few rivals outside its own showroom. There is its other Porsche 911 sibling that is a matchless sports car in its own right. Perhaps an AWD Audi TT might be tempting, as the car’s AWD dynamics and decent fuel consumption make it both practical and entertaining. Maybe a 2017 Mercedes-Benz SLC-Class would attract those enticed by premium comfort rather than performance. Then there is, of course, the classy Nissan 370Z which is a quick, well-priced and confident roadster. It has an impressive pedigree and distinctive shape.
Another out of the box option might be the new 2018 Chevrolet Corvette – one performance car I’ll confess I love – which really delivers unmatched performance for the price. Looks for the Corvette are mean and aggressive, backed up by huge performance (0-100 km/h in around 4.3 seconds and onto over 340 km/h) and excellent features to go with its pricing. It does use big cc torque and muscle, so can’t match the 718 GTS for economy, however.
Combined speed, handling and luxury all make for a compelling new Porsche 718 GTS Roadster that’s a gem to drive fast. On the Porsche 718 GTS models, the lightweight chassis with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) delivers precise and very agile handling. The system boasts electronic damping control which continuously adjusts the damping force on each wheel based on current road conditions and driving style. On a 718 GTS, the body sits 10 mm lower than that of the 718 and 718 S models resulting in increased driving stability – particularly at very fast speeds, increased safety and increased performance.
You can opt for equipping your new Porsche 718 GTS out with the PASM sports suspension, where the body sits 20 mm lower than that of the 718 and 718 S models. The springs are harder and shorter, and the anti-roll bars are stiffer resulting in more performance gains – particularly good for those interested in track days.
In top trim, the 718 rivals the best a 911 can offer for luxury and comfort. When driving your new Porsche 718 GTS you have plenty of luxury that’s wrapping up the sporty flavour. Satellite navigation, leather sports seats, wireless charging, USB ports, BOSE audio (Burmester premium audio option available), Bluetooth hands-free phone, active cruise control, huge ABS braking, TCS and more.
Drive the 2018 718 GTDS, and you’ll love the Porsche experience.
