You have to admit that the 2019 Audi TT looks stunning. It’s low, curvy and packs plenty of style. You’ll be also interested to note that though the TT is a quick little sports car, the interior is more practical then you might have thought when using it for just the two of you. Of course, Audi serves up its impeccable interior quality, and you’ve got oodles of power and handling prowess to enjoy. This Audi TT model boasts an unmistakable silhouette that looks more aggressive and even more memorable than the original TT Coupe.
So, let’s take a look at the design. Nothing quite like it exists on the road and it has that wow factor that cars like the Porsche 911 and Nissan ZX cars possess. 20 years on from the first production models and the same teardrop shape still hugs the road and just beckons to be driven. The 2019 design highlights include Audi rings on the bonnet, an aluminium fuel-cap with visible screw heads, an electronically operated rear spoiler, and bulging wheel arches for a powerful stance. Also setting the new TT off are some striking LED headlamps, DRLs and those progressive Audi indicators. At the front of the TT is an aggressive single-frame honeycomb grille that features inset quattro lettering. The grille is flanked by deep air intakes which look really cool. 20-inch alloy wheels and red brake callipers hint at the car’s enormous cornering potential, which is also helped by the significant downforce produced by the cute-looking fixed rear spoiler. When it comes to alloy wheel designs and exterior body colours there is now a lot more choices to be made.
On the road, the car feels sharp and very accurate. The ride is nice for a small coupe, but when push really does come to shove, the quattro all-wheel drive system in the TT RS creates astonishing levels of grip and traction for those drivers who just want to be a bit manic. Any of the models, however, provide dynamic and involved handling. You can also choose from 4 pre-set driving modes: Dynamic, Comfort, Auto and Efficiency. But there is also the option of creating your own mode set-up when Individual is selected.
The choice of engines is good, and the standard Audi TT Coupe and Audi TT Roadster sees a 4-cylinder petrol motor with direct and indirect fuel injection, turbo-charging and Audi’ valvelift technology. The 2.0-litre TFSI engine boasts 169 kW of power between 4500 and 6200 rpm. Strong pulling power is shown in the torque figures of 370 Nm between 1600 –to-4300 rpm. Put your foot down and the acceleration is addictive. The power is put down on the road via a slick operating 6-speed S tronic gearbox or 6-speed manual gearbox. The manual FWD set-up allows for a 0-100 km/h sprint to be done-and-dusted in around six seconds, while the s tronic quattros get the job done in around 5.3 seconds. A limited top speed of 250 km/h is standard for both options.
Engine power steps up when you hop into the Audi TTS Coupe and Roadster models. The 2.0-litre TFSI engine with its 4-cylinder petrol with direct and indirect fuel injection, turbo-charging and Audi valvelift technology puts out a lusty maximum of 210 kW between 5300-and-6200 rpm, while the 380 Nm of torque id offered instantly from 1800 all the way up to 5200 rpm. Manufacturer’s figures state the acceleration for the 0-100 km/h dash is 4.7 seconds for the Coupe and 5.0 seconds for the Roadster.
Hard core Audi TT performance fans will want the brand new Audi TTRS model. Nothing short of raw power is delivered in an instant, but also nice is the way the TTRS happily trickles down the road at everyday driving speeds and limits. The TTRS offers the turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine that produces a 294 kW bomb with 480 Nm of torque. The new engine has an advanced aluminium construction that reduces weight for greater agility and results in increased performance. This model is capable of dispatching the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 3.7 seconds. The Audi TT legend lives on.
Perhaps a slight flaw is that Audi doesn’t offer diesel of hybrid varieties.
Step into an Audi TT Coupe and you have impeccable materials and build quality. There are electrically operated front sport seats, stainless steel pedals and an especially nice sport steering wheel. The modern TT comes with all the infotainment wizardry and vehicle information within the Audi virtual cockpit. The Audi virtual cockpit is a 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster that replaces traditional dials and provides driver information, navigation data and infotainment functions that are displayed in brilliant high resolution.
To complete the sports luxury experience, Audi offers an optional Bang and Olufsen Sound System that delivers a very premium audio experience. Audi TT RS owners will enjoy even more exclusivity with special RS sport seats featuring a diamond patterned stitching over fine Nappa leather. The seats have electronic adjustment and pneumatic bolsters. A flat-bottomed steering wheel incorporates two unique satellite buttons shared only with the R8. The right button starts the engine and the left button changes the Audi drive select setting so that major performance functions are easily selects and immediately at your fingertips.
Some other innovations for 2019 model sees a new Audi parking system, a rear view camera, upgraded active lane assist, side assist, semi-autonomous parking, and folding exterior mirrors with a kerb-view function on the passenger side. Another cool feature is that the climate control adjustments can be made via the dials inset into the air vents – I like! Also noteworthy is the absence of a central dash touchscreen, because as pointed to already the driver has everything inside the digitally displaying virtual cockpit.
Boot space is actually similar to a Ford Fiesta, so you can put plenty inside for the weekend away. Flip the rear seats down and the luggage space grows. It is suggested that you keep the rear seats down anyway, as the rear seat passengers are unlikely to be blessed with a body shape small enough to happily enjoy the journey – enough said. So if you treat the Audi TT as a two-seater, then the car is perfect for you. Doors can hold a large water bottle inside the bins.
Twenty years on and the Audi TT still makes your heart jump. It looks so cool and drives with all the verve and panache we have come to expect. For two people, this has to be one of the most desirable coupes.
