Love the retro lifestyle? Love cruising the roads with distinctive cuteness? If you answer yes to both these questions, then Fiat celebrates the 500 birthday with the return of another timeless icon: the brand new version of the 500C Spiaggina. The Spiaggina was the first Fiat 500 special series that was launched in 1958; and this original car went immediately to cult status. Created as a convertible, the Spiaggina makes every journey fun in its enchanting Volare Blue colour scheme. Note that only 30 of the new Fiat 500C Spiaggina cars are available for Australia, so be in quick!
Looks alone for the Spiaggina convertible are stunningly cute and gorgeous. Finished in a Volare Blue paint finish with white detailing is altogether timeless, and the glamorous style is truly irresistible. Boasting chrome bumper trims, chrome door mirrors, chrome fog lights, a chrome 500 logo on the side mouldings and the vintage 16-inch alloy rim design provides this car with an unimpeachable, sophisticated retro look that is elegant and striking even by today’s standards. It’s this modern old-fashioned blend that is going to capture the imagination and hearts of 2019 Fiat 500C Spiaggina buyers.
Enter the cute Fiat 500 C Spiaggina cabin space and your driving experience is taken up a notch or two. Where else ‘automotively’ can you match the quaint, vintage seaside holiday resort kind-of-feeling you get from inside a 2019 Fiat 500C Spiaggina? Driving a new Fiat 500C Spiaggina is all about fun and entertainment – and this you’ll get by the bucket loads!
Seating for two large adults in the front is comfortable and spacious. The premium cloth seats are very comfortable and supportive. They look really nice too, matching the old-fashioned Spiaggina style perfectly. Chrome detailing inside and out of the Spiaggina adds elegance to the car’s appearance and you get chrome front grille surrounds, chrome rear bumper inserts, chrome sill plates and chrome exterior window details. There is a little boot space: 180 litres. But if it’s just the two of you heading away on a romantic weekend, then there is always the back seats – by which I mean for extra luggage-carrying space. The 500C back seats could be a bit of a squeeze for any slap’n’tickle!
The car is actually very modern out on the road despite the retro looks, with excellent road manners and plenty of zip. The engine under the tiny hood of the 500C Spiaggina is a 1.2-litre, 4-Cylinder petrol variant with 51 kW and 102 Nm. It is the same motor used in any of the other Fiat 500 models. These output figures are small in the power stakes but you will enjoy the small Spiaggina’s willingness to whizz along. Feel the breeze in your hair with the top folded back, and motoring doesn’t get much more delightful than this.
Two forms of transmission are available: a 5-Speed manual transmission or a 5-Speed Dualogic automatic transmission. The Fiat 500C Spiaggina is a FWD car with responsive steering and a good, stable grip on the road. Given the right road you can whistle up to 160 km/h, however sitting at 90-to-110 km/h is easy to do, particularly with the Spiaggina’s tall gearing. The 0-100 km/h sprint takes around 13 seconds, which for everyday travel is sprightly enough. However, expect plenty of traffic to overtake you out on the motorway. Economy-wise, you should easily attain around 5.0 litres/100 km. If I were to choose between which transmission to run with, it would have to be the dualogic auto which gives the ‘holidayish’ Spiaggina experience that extra relaxed driving style – which I like.
Retro styling meets modern day life in the form of plenty of excellent up-to-date on-board features being standard on a new Fiat 500C Spiaggina. You’ll find the 7-Inch TFT instrument cluster display sharp and informative. The trip computer is excellent. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, rear parking sensors, cruise control, automatic climate control and front fog lights go a long way to making your new Spiaggina experience very up-to-date.
Drive the little Fiat 500C Spiaggina, and you’ll be impressed with all the safety features that come as standard. There are daytime running lights, LED light technology, ESP, ASR/MSR, HBA and Hill Holder assist, seven airbags, front seat belt pretensioners, load limiter and fastening sensors, hazard light activation during emergency braking procedures, headlight alignment correction levelling, Isofix attachment points for kiddie seats in the rear and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Euro NCAP testing for the current 500C showed that the passenger compartment of the 500 remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs for both the driver and the passenger. Fiat showed that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and to those who sat in different positions. However, you are driving a tiny car, and if you accidentally hit something twice your size then physics takes over. That said you’ll be able to look for all those accident avoidance gaps which your defensive driving courses have taught you.
The Fiat 500C is a very cute city car that’s cheap to run and comes with eye-catching retro looks. Open road touring is a hoot in the Spiaggina. Oh, and the ‘C’ stands for convertible in case you hadn’t worked that out, but it’s better if you think of the500C’s folding soft top as a massive fabric sunroof that you can flip down automatically whenever the sun starts shining. Now go have some fun!
