All you Tradie people out there better take a look at the brand new Jeep Gladiator soon to be on sale, as it is one hot looking beast! Being a pick-up truck it is hugely practical for work and recreational purposes, while fitting the family inside a Gladiator cabin is a breeze. All those great getaways are within reach when you own a Gladiator.
Melding the 4×4 versatility of the Jeep Wrangler with a pick-up truck shape makes the new Gladiator incredibly good for so many purposes, and if the word ‘off-road’ is used frequently in your vocabulary then the Gladiator is a big game performer. With loads of space in the rear seats you can bring a load of friends, picnic baskets, chilly bins and hunting gear with you as you head out for a day’s exploring off the beaten track.
Jeep knows all about building trucks, and although the last pick-up Jeep built was in the early nineties, they can date back along a proud heritage of popular trucks that have been built since the forties. Sitting 750 mm longer than the latest Unlimited Jeep Wrangler, the road presence that the Gladiator brings is immense. The Gladiator poses at over 5.5 meters in length. Accommodating a huge tray made of steel, the Jeep Gladiator boasts colossal load carrying ability. The tray is over 1.5 meters long and its very deep. No longer is the spare tyre on the rear gate, but Jeep have now accommodated this underneath the tray behind the rear axle – the best place in my opinion. The tail gate is made out of aluminium and can be locked half closed to make it easier to carry building materials.
Towing ability is immense, with the new Gladiator more than capable of towing 3500 kg. So to pull this you have the familiar Pentastar 3.6-litre V6 Petrol engine with 212 kW and 353 Nm. This motor is linked to either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. The V6 engine is smooth and powerful, while it also emits a great sound when you plant your foot down. After the V6 is launched there will soon become available a 3.0-litre V6 Turbo-diesel boasting 194 kW and 600 Nm of torque – Wow that’s some grunt! This will be mated to an eight speed auto, only.
For a vehicle that can go places that horses can trek, the Gladiator is remarkably refined on the road. Having a lengthy front-to-rear axle wheelbase, the Gladiator rides pretty smooth over any road undulations. That said, it’s true calling is in the mud…
Long journeys in a new Jeep Gladiator are very relaxed, with all the modern infotainment gear, electronic switchgear, and a very stylish dash display that is easy on the eye and user friendly. Steering wheel mounted buttons, a huge square touchscreen display, round vents and speedometer dials, climate control, big audio sound and a variety of upholstery trims are all available. Back seat passengers get huge room that accommodates three big lads very easily. The rear seats can be folded down and lifted up to reveal more storage compartments for even bigger long-trip practicality.
Offering a 280 mm ground clearance and a water wading depth of over 750 mm the new Jeep Gladiator loves to play off-road. Two levels of 4×4 gearing are offered for Gladiator buyers. The base Command 4×4 system (Sport and Overland) is good for most off-road excursions but if you really want to go some seriously scary places, the Rock Track system (Rubicon) delivers features like diff-locking front and rear, a 4:1 crawling ratio, a disconnecting front sway bar, and off-road shields and plates for protection in seriously gnarly conditions. A pretty cool option is a camera built into the grille so that you can see obstacles right beneath the bonnet before driving forwards over them.
Short wheel base Wranglers always beats a long wheel base for tight manoeuvrability, but that said a few 16-point turns and you’re away again. Belly height is still high in a Gladiator, and it takes a bit to get it wedged, but these are the two things to keep in mind when heading off and doing serious bush bashing in the very rugged, very likable Gladiator.
If I was to choose between a new Jeep Gladiator, Toyota Hilux, Holden Colorado, Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara, VW Amarok or Mercedes Benz X-Class, I would take the awesome Gladiator any day!
