If fashion swings in roundabouts then you could argue that the compact sedan is due to make a comeback. The compact sedan has loads to offer the new car buyer who’s after efficiency and refinement and, especially when looking at a brand new 2019 Mazda 3 Sedan, you grab yourself quite the mod statement.
Mazda’s 3 Sedan is a small family car that’s great to drive. If looks could kill ‘automotively’, then the new Mazda 3 Sedan is simply drop-dead gorgeous! There are few cars in any class that look as good as the new Mazda 3 with its prominent grille, sharp lines and piercing headlights. Inside the small Mazda 3 Sedan, the seating position is low and the cockpit is endearing to a driving enthusiast’s love for energy. Handling is athletic and involving, and as a FWD sedan this is hard to beat. AWD models are available overseas, hopefully here as well, the AWD traction making for superior road holding in slippery conditions. Even the FWD compact 3 Sedan tracks like it’s on rails. Inside top of the range Mazda 3 Sedans the interior even boasts premium red leather that is both seductive and comfortable.
Costing less than a new Mercedes Benz C-Class, this is the one I’d be driving. Better looking in my opinion, the Mazda 3 Sedan has all the mod cons as well as interior space. Boot space is 444 litres, but cabin space for occupants is good and seat comfort excellent – particularly with premium models. Premium models match the C-Class for looks and comfort.
It’s not only in looks though; the latest Mazda 3 Sedan has quality switchgear and trim. Mazda has gone to the extra effort needed to match benchmark cars like the new C-Class, and it shows. Each button offers the same tactility and reacts similarly to the others. The dials for the climate-control system, the audio volume, and the ‘Commander infotainment system’ all feel the same and turn with similar resistance. Quality materials and clean, simplified interior design makes for class leading cues that auto journalists are looking for.
Large analogue dials flank a digital speedometer that looks clear and elegant. The optional heads-up display projects clear info onto the windshield, and is a feature well-worth the investment. A brand new 8.8-inch display screen is standard on every model and sits perky on the dashboard, slanted slightly toward the driver. The system can now be entirely operated by the larger console-mounted knob. A volume knob sits next to the Commander interface, and pushing it to the left or right lets you skip to the next song or station. The infotainment’s menu structure is logical and very user-friendly. Also nice is the quick response after each menu selection. Mazda’s premium 3 Sedan models also boast a lovely Bose Centerpoint audio system that delivers a quality sound via the surround sound music environment. This will be a winner for any music lover. Very nicely packaged and tastefully styled, the 2019 Mazda 3 Sedan exudes a quality similar to that of cars that cost tens of thousands more than the new 3’s price tag. It’s hard to find a better luxury compact sedan for similar money.
In addition to the Mazda 3’s sexy looks and improved performance, the 2019 Mazda3 includes many convenience and driver assistance features, both of tradition and those that are brand-new, such as the brilliant Mazda Connect Infotainment system, a Driver Monitoring System, the Bose premium 12-Speaker audio, Smart City Brake Support, Mazda’s advanced Keyless Entry System, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an Active Driving Display, a powered sunroof, G-Vectoring Control Plus, an Adaptive Front-Lighting system, rain-sensing windshield wipers and Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go efficiency.
After a drive in the swift G25 Mazda3 Sedan the punchy power delivery is evident. Mazda’s 3 premium sedans boast the powerful SKYACTIV G-25, 2.5-litre inline 4-cylinder motor with 139 kW to play with as well as a strong 252 Nm of torque across a wide rev range. This swell of power makes for a delightfully satisfying drive. Mazda connects this power to the road via their special SKYACTIV Drive 6-speed automatic gearbox that’s very nicely matched for optimum response and efficiency. AWD is also available (hopefully in Australia!), and with this type of road holding the new Mazda 3 Sedan is hugely rewarding to drive. Even in FWD form the car is superbly balanced and grippy. Boasting less than 9 litres/100 km around town and as low as 6.5 litres/100 km on the open road you have a superb compact car that can more than hold its own on the motorway. Should you need the 2019 Mazda3 to perform towing duties, the car comes with a braked towing capacity of 1200 kg.
You can also enjoy the new Mazda 3 sedan’s beauty with an even more efficient G20 motor that puts out 114 kW and 200 Nm. Both the larger G25 and the smaller G20 engines can be matched to a six-speed manual or six-speed auto.
The new Mazda 3, whether in hatch or sedan form, is covered by Mazda’s five-year unlimited-kilometre warranty. Mazda recommends a 10,000 km/12 month servicing interval. Honda’s Civic Sedan is powered by the 2-litre inline 4-cylinder that is responsive – as all Honda V-TECs are. Mercedes Benz sedans boast mild hybrid technology in their C200 sedans; however neither of these quite deliver the same excitement as the equivalent brand new Mazda 3 Sedan. And then there is the Mazda 3 Sedan’s fastback profile which is wonderfully attractive – a rare thing among small affordable sedans with four doors.
The 2019 Mazda 3 Sedan models include the:
