Porsche 718 models deliver mighty performance and attractive looks. Now two even more powerful versions exist boasting 309 kW, making the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 and Porsche Cayman Spyder two sprinters with a difference. Essentially track ready, the new top of the range 718s are a great way to get into racing with a Porsche.
Fit for the road as well, you are set for scintillating handling and power which comes from the 4.0-litre, 6-cylinder petrol engine mounted in the mid-section over a race tweaked chassis. Capable of hitting 300 km/h and seeing off the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.4 seconds the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 roadster as well as the 718 Spyder open-top roadster are very quick. The 420 Nm of torque is available in a thick band of engine revs meaning that power transmitted to the road is full on.
The sharp handling dynamics are thanks to the 718’s racing chassis. At the front and rear of the car a lightweight spring-strut axle, anti-roll bar and suspension mountings that are partly ball-jointed, keeping the nose taut and balanced, while the rear-end tracks sweetly. Fast accurate steering is thanks to an electromechanical direct steering set-up with a variable steering ratio and steering pulse generator. A Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system uses an ABS system with two switchable stages: SC OFF and SC+TC OFF. So, you can go totally raw without the electronic driving aids switched on or you can have the back-up of the aids working for you and with you.
With this much power and superior handling prowess the 718 GT4 and Spyder need to be able to rein in the velocity when required, so to do this Porsche have equipped these particular models with 6-piston aluminium monobloc fixed-caliper brakes at the front, and 4-piston aluminium monobloc fixed-caliper brakes at the rear. Both the front and rear are 380 mm composite brake discs with aluminium brake chambers. The result is a commanding braking system that truly delivers formidable stopping power.
The 917 Cayman GT4 and Spyder offer the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) in its most recent form. Porsche Connect also offers two smartphone apps. The PCM Connect App allows you to send destinations to your Porsche before you start your journey. The new Porsche Track Precision App is a fully optimised interface that is even easier and more intuitive to use and enables your detailed driving stats to be displayed, logged and analysed on your smartphone, anytime. You also find that the car comes with Apple CarPlay and a ten speaker BOSE surround sound system for a premium music experience.
The leather interior and the decorative stitching look really nice. Contrasting colours for the leather interior and decorative stitching as well as the door pull loops are offered in a mix of black, grey, red or yellow. The seat belts can also be in a matching colour if desired. Sports seats Plus, adaptive Sports seats Plus or full bucket seats are the options available to you for seating. The lighter full bucket seats are made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) with a carbon-weave finish.
In my opinion, the Porsche 718 is the best looking Porsche at present. The brand new spoiler and front air dam shape on these two 718 cars look really primo and give the 718 a unique racy appearance that is not only very aerodynamic but also beautifully balanced and attractive to the eye. Nine exterior colours are available. Whether it’s the hard top or open top, not many sports cars are out there that look quite as cool as a 917, especially for that special romantic weekend away for two.
