The new Audi A1 Sportback redefines the compact hatchback segment, and it has to be considered as one go-to model if you want the best in premium features, style and technology. It’s an Audi after all! So, if the premium A1 price tag might put you off, there is the other option where you could just buy a VW Polo! They are essentially the same cars except that the Polo is the no frills version and the A1 is very much the razzle-dazzler!
Its striking lines are quite solid and muscle-bound for what is a compact hatch, and the chunky nose looks cool and houses the latest LED lighting technology that I’m sure you’ve noticed in other Audi cars where the sweeping indicator movements catch the eye. S-Line Audi A1 versions are the coolest of the lot and boast a nice sporty character. And, even Audi A1 cars have the trickle-down genes that can be traced through to the speedy Quattro machines.
I love the style, and the modern architecture continues inside the 2020 Audi A1. Yes, the interior is accordingly driver-focused and boasts a customisable design. You have a selection of different dash and driver display themes to choose from, while the up-to-date infotainment and driver assistance systems are classy. Mood lighting in many different colours is available and a pretty cool feature to have to impress your date!
Own a new Audi A1 Sportback and you will be firmly networked with the digital world. So, even the basic A1 models come standard with a fully digital instrument cluster with a high-resolution, 10.25-inch display and a multifunction steering wheel. Yes, that’s great!
The optional Audi virtual cockpit with an extended range of functions works so well and has to be the best out there for HD animated navigation maps and graphics. The little A1 boasts the latest Audi smartphone interface for iOS and Android smartphones using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Base model sound systems are clear and funky, while there is the optional Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System. Buy a new Audi A1 and you’ll be pumping out your favourite tracks on these fine car audio packages.
Pay more and you can also get more too. Wireless phone charging and bigger touchscreens with even more features are available. For example, you can get a Comfort Pack which includes features like premium leather seats, heated seats and the Bang & Olufsen stereo.
On a more practical note: USB ports, 12V sockets, plenty of handy storage which also includes under seat drawers, an adjustable steering column, height adjustable front seats, cup-holders, and big door bins for big bottles front and rear. Rear seat space is very good for what is, after all, a very compact car. You’ll be impressed with the Audi A1’s rear seat leg room and head room available for six foot adults – though, as you would expect, middle seat six-footers won’t find it very comfortable. However, four adults – no problems, and five kids – no problems! Coat hooks and isofix points are standard, and leather map pockets behind the front seats are big enough to put an iPad in.
Boot space is what you’d expect in a compact hatch – handy but not huge. There is a cargo net, luggage screen and an adjustable boot floor. Fold the rear seats flat and there is a decently large cargo area.
Safety is taken seriously by all car marques these days; they have to. Audi’s A1 comes with some excellent features, some of which are a directly brought in from bigger Audi siblings. Driver assistance aids include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, adaptive speed assist and Audi pre sense systems that can recognise critical situations involving other vehicles, crossing pedestrians or cyclists ahead of the vehicle. Buying a car with emergency braking is well worth the investment, particularly in city environments.
Cool cars need cool colours and the new compact Audi A1 Sportback has big, loud colours as well as soft, delicate tones; so depending on your preference you can kit out the exact A1 that’s just right for you. The Audi A1 is available in a choice of 10 colours that notably showcase the sweet A1 design language. Even the roof can be optionally finished in a contrasting colour from the A-pillar to the roof edge spoiler. You can be as bold as you like so people can’t help but notice you pull up at the lights. The exterior mirror housings, the side front spoiler lips and the side sills are also available in contrasting colour coordination.
Audi’s range of small turbocharged engines are well-suited to the A1, and are delightful. So, whether you need an A1 for city commuting or and A1 for the motorway, the range of engines will impress. The choice of efficient petrol engines offer outputs ranging from 85 kW to 110 kW. Turbocharging, direct injection technology and a particulate filter are standard Audi A1 features. More powerful A1 versions will become available.
Of course, fun doesn’t come with sprightly engine performance alone, so with the new A1 you get agile handling skills, a refined chassis, and loads of grip. The front suspension is a McPherson design, and at the rear is a lightweight torsion beam axle. This is the standard package. Tauter sport suspensions can be had as an option, and Audi drive select is also an available option on the new Audi A1 which allows the driver to change the chassis set-up – very cool. The little Audi A1 is nice and easy to drive.
That, my friend, is the all-new 2020 Audi A1 in a nutshell.
