2019 B-Class

The all-new 2019 Mercedes Benz B-Class is here for the Australian new car buyer.  It has leaner styling, feels more dynamic on the road, and is even more comfortable and safer than ever – quite a feat when the outgoing model was already very good.  A new B-Class is a great size for the small family, and even for those who need a solid, reliable runabout that is as comfortable in the city as it is on the open roads.

Driving the new B-Class has you quickly mesmerised by the beautiful digital displays that are now offered in all new Mercedes Benz cars.  The high definition digital displays are prominent features and can’t help to be seen by all occupants.  As a central touchscreen display that has all the newest infotainment technology it is very easy to use and can be controlled by Voice Control.  The display screen extends at least a third of the way across the dash and is married with the dash lines beautifully for an elegant, fresh style.

2019 B-Class

Own a new Mercedes Benz B-Class, and even the standard car comes with excellent cabin features that include: comfort seats in ARTICO upholstery, satellite navigation, an MBUX multimedia system with awesome widescreen cockpit vision (2 x 10.25-inch digital screens), the central touchscreen display, DAB+ Digital Radio, electric windows and multiple isofix points.

An advanced sound system with a total output of 225 W gets pumped through 9 speakers for an incredible audio experience.  All your music sounds good on this one.  Luxuries like automatic climate control, power windows, keyless entry, reading lights front and rear, smartphone integration, USB ports and auxiliary points for running other electronic devices do ensure that the entire Mercedes Benz B-Class occupants are very well catered for, even in the B180 standard guise.

Visually, I like the more streamlined exterior that looks leaner and more aggressive.  The 17-inch 5 twin-spoke alloy wheels come as standard and give the mid-size hatch a bit of sparkle.

Safety ratings mean a lot to the team at Mercedes and so, as standard, you get things like Active Brake Assist, Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC technology, Active Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Assist with exit warning, Traffic Sign Assist, a reversing camera, a new Mirror Package, and powerful LED headlamps for night driving.

DRL technology keeps you seen by other road users as well as looking classy.  Nine airbags are passively at the ready should you require all of the five-star safety features to be engaged.  However, there is a lot of accident avoidance features working for you before getting to this point!  Hill Start Assist, Active Brake Assist with a semi-autonomous braking function, cross wind assist and advanced ESP are other nice features that come as standard on your new Mercedes Benz B-Class.  It’s also equipped with Active Distance Assist which can automatically keep the required distance from the vehicle ahead.

Owning a car like the B-Class also suggests that you like the ability of being able to travel with other companions.  Mercedes Benz state that the B-Class actually has similar elbow room to cars segmented in the class above the B-Class, so friends travelling with you should find the new B-Class nice and comfortable to travel in.  Top end models get rear seats that recline and slide backwards and forwards for more or less leg room and luggage space.  Of course, the B-Class can split fold (40:20:40) the rear seats or even fold them flat altogether so that anywhere between 455 –to-1540 litres of boot space capacity is available.

• A Vision Package with a panoramic sliding sunroof, adaptive high-beam assist, multibeam LED headlights and a parking package with a 360-degree camera.

• A Sports Package (AMG Line) with a Sports Direct-Steer system, lowered comfort suspension, 18-inch AMG 5 spoke alloy wheels, AMG body styling on front/rear aprons and side sill panels, comfort sports seats with a dark-tinted privacy glass from B-pillar to rear, night package with exterior trim elements in high-gloss black, exterior side mirrors in black, a beltline trim strip in high-gloss black with chrome highlights, brake callipers with “Mercedes-Benz” lettering, a diamond radiator grille in black with single lamella in high-gloss black and chrome pins, light longitudinal-grain aluminium trim, DIRECT SELECT paddle shifters, a multi-function new generation 3-spoke sports steering wheel with 2-touch controls in Nappa leather with a flattened lower section, sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs, AMG floor mats and a two-pipe exhaust system with tailpipes in chrome.
• A Driver Assistance Package with an Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC (incl. Cross-Traffic Assist), Driving Assistance package PLUS, Active Lane Change Assist and an extended automatic re-start in traffic.
• A Protection Package with an anti-theft alarm and an interior monitoring system.

Other optional equipment you might like includes: the deletion of a boot lid badge, a wireless charging system for mobile devices, ambient lighting that’s available in 64 colours, multicontour front seats, a KEYLESS-GO drive and comfort authorisation system, 17-inch 5 twin-spoke alloy wheels in a matt himalaya grey finish, 17-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels in a vanadium silver finish, 18-inch 5 twin-spoke alloy wheels in a black with a high-sheen finish, and 18-inch AMG 5 twin-spoke alloy wheels in a bi-colour high-gloss black.

The new Mercedes Benz B 180 for Australia runs with a small but powerful 1.3-litre petrol engine developing 100 kW at peak and 200 Nm from 1460 rpm.  The direct-injection, turbocharged engine spins very sweetly and freely through the revs, linking with the smooth 7G-DCT 7-speed automatic in a most likable fashion.  Mercedes state that the B180 is good for 212 km/h and a 0-100 km/h sprint that can be done in 9 seconds.

It’s a front-wheel-drive roomy hatch that sticks nicely to the road and soaks up the bumps with ease.  In ideal conditions the B180 can get lower than 6 litres/100 km but in reality it will more often be a bit higher than this.  Still, fully loaded out on the open road the Mercedes Benz B180 slips along effortlessly and remains well composed.  The ECO start/stop function works nicely in city traffic,
