Peugeot’s 2020 508 Wagon is called the Sportswagon GT. Stunning lines and gorgeous styling make this a wagon to be noticed in. Both inside and out, Peugeot has created a new wagon to get all excited about, so let’s take a closer look at the new class leader.
Available in eight striking colours, the exterior of the latest 508 station wagon gets to show its curves and lines off beautifully. There are a couple of blues, three greys a white, a red and a black to choose from, all of which capture the sun’s rays beautifully. Even on a dull day your good-looking Peugeot 508 Sportswagon still has the ability to sparkle. From the side, the new wagon is low-slung with a low roofline and lengthy body. The low roofline height is aided by the fact that the 508 comes with sporty-looking frameless doors. This look straight away exudes speed and excitement.
Front on, the 508 reveals a very focused appearance that is enclosed with some very sharp looking DRLs that are on the vertical and run from the slim headlight cluster right down into the corners of the front air dam. The chequered grill, Peugeot lion and latticed air intakes all add to the Peugeot 508’s pretty face. It’s a very balanced and attractive design.
Head around the back of the Sportswagon, and the looks are just as tidy. The tailgate is wide, accentuated by the wraparound taillights that join in the middle as a complete horizontal bar with the Peugeot lion at the centre. The tailgate houses a roof spoiler and you can’t help but notice the large twin exhaust outlets low down and at either side. It is a lovely design that is remarkably simple but looks so good.
Head on inside the 508 Sportswagon and the innovative interior is wrapped up in gorgeous leather and premium materials. I would rate this as one of the best looking interiors, period. Very modern materials and technology are offered as standard in a design that is bold and beautiful. You do feel like the interior is almost a bit futuristic, and that’s cool. Lots of chrome, shiny surfaces and interesting angles all marry into a gorgeous looking cabin experience. And the smooth glossy dash and centre console surfaces are offset with exquisitely detailed Nappa leather seating with impressed prints and accented stitching. You’re definitely comfortable and classy in the new 508!
Peugeot has given the 508 Sportswagon a leather wrapped sports steering wheel that is quite small in its dimensions but great to hold and easy to use, making tight city streets a breeze. Paddle shifters are present and the steering wheel is multi-functional with loads of buttons for audio and Bluetooth functions. Standard equipment includes Peugeot’s most recent suite of driver assistance systems. These include: semi-autonomous highway driving assist that incorporates adaptive cruise and lane keeping functions, Nappa leather seating with massaging front seats, full-LED lighting for the front and rear of the car, ambient mood lighting, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, and a 10.0-inch HD central infotainment system with satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a premium surround sound audio experience with 10 speakers and a dedicated sub-woofer and amplifier. Actually, the sound is better than most systems that much pricier luxury cars offer. Under the elevated centre console is a space for wireless charging. Other than the cost-option for the various paint colours, the only other available option on a new 2020 Peugeot 508 Sportswagon is a powered sunroof, which costs around $2500, so what you see is what you get with this one model wonder.
The semi-autonomous driving assist, adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist are all technologies that send it right up to the top of the class and, when you consider the price, the Peugeot 508 Sportswagon is not only five-star safe but also hard to walk by in the showroom.
When you’re out running at motorway speeds the cabin is quiet and very comfortable. You really do feel like you are driving a premium car with the ride quality, solid feeling and luxury all part of the superb Peugeot 508 Sportswagon’s experience. The Sportswagon also comes with an adaptive suspension as standard. Drive is sent exclusively to the front wheels via a new eight-speed automatic transmission supplied by Aisin in Japan. The automatic gearbox is brilliant and works perfectly in unison with engine demands.
The car is is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine which generates a punchy 165 kW at 5500 rpm. Lusty levels of torque come low down and peak at 300 Nm at 2750 rpm. The engine is Euro 6-certified and is good for a 6.3 litre/100 km combined fuel cycle, but is also capable of dispatching the 0-100 km/h dash in around eight seconds.
The Sportswagon offers 612 litres of luggage space behind the seats. Fold the rear seats down and you get around 1800 litres. There is actually a bit more head room in the rear seats for those who opt for the Sportswagon over the Fastback (Hatchback) model, and those in the rear don’t lose out on comfort. The rear seats are nice and comfortable, and even recline should you feel the need. Roof rails are standard, offering an extra bit of versatility when fully laden.
The new 2020 Peugeot 508 Fastback and Sportswagon are covered by a five year, unlimited kilometre warranty with five years of roadside assistance and five years of capped-price servicing.
Beautiful styled and very classy, you really will be very impressed. Top job Peugeot!
