2020 Hyundai Venue

Gob smacked really!  Hyundai keeps rolling out the goodies, and this time we’ve got the pleasure of driving their entry level SUV, known as the ‘Venue’.  It’s hard to believe that for around $20k you can find yourself in a brand-spanking new small SUV that looks the ‘bees knees’ and delivers on the equipment list.  And for around $5k you can get the loaded version, too.  Let’s take a closer look.

It’s a boxy little SUV that looks similar in size to a Suzuki Jimny/Vitara.  But, you know, if I was on the lookout for any small vehicle to drive about town then I’d be adding the new Hyundai Venue to the list of small cars to check over.  It seriously gives the Suzuki Swift, Suzuki Vitara, Mazda 2, Mazda CX-3 and Toyota Yaris a decent nudge.  For the same price you could have Hyundai’s entry model, the i30 Go, but I have a sneaky suspicion that the Venue is going to get more attention.

The base model Hyundai Venue Go variants kick off with six airbags, a camera-type AEB, a driver attention warning system, lane-keeping assist, high beam assist, a tyre-pressure monitoring system, dusk-sensing headlights, 15-inch steel wheels, a rear-view camera, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Hyundai auto link and a four speaker sound system.  These features are pretty decent and keep the Venue very interesting, indeed.  It doesn’t feel like you’ve been caught short on equipment, though there is no hiding that the cabin, while comfortable, uses plenty of hard plastics.  But in saying this, the cabin has been finished off nicely and feels good quality.  As far as the ergonomics go the design is nice and practical, and there is steering wheel adjustment and driver seat height adjustment as well.

It’s worth mentioning here that the new Hyundai Venue offers a 355-litre boot space that is miles bigger than a small hatchback, so it is definitely big on practicality.  Seats are comfortable; however there is an issue with legroom for tall adults in the rear – but what small hatchback doesn’t struggle in this department.

Moving up to the new Hyundai Venue Active model, and on top of the Go model, you get some really good equipment like: LED daytime running lights, rear parking sensors, 15-inch alloy wheels, a six-speaker audio system, power-folding side mirrors, a front centre armrest and a leather steering wheel.  This will be a very popular model and it only costs a little bit more.

The top of the range Hyundai Venue Elite has the premium cloth seats which sets this model off nicely.  You get some premium items too – which for the money spent is simply excellent.  The Hyundai Venue Elite adds to the Active’s list a blind-spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert, 17-inch alloy wheels, LED rear lights, rear privacy glass, two-tone roof and mirrors, satellite-navigation and climate control.

These small SUVs are well catered for in the safety equipment list and offer Hyundai’s ‘SmartSense’ driver-assistance technology.  Leading this suite are features like autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, tyre-pressure monitoring and high-beam assist.

Power in Australia will be delivered via the sprightly wee Kia Sole engine.  It is a 1.6-litre petrol powerplant with 90 kW to play around with and a good dollop of torque (151Nm).  You can choose to have the power delivered to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.  A 190 mm ground clearance will come in handy for curb hopping and the stability control and electronic braking gives the Venue a handy grip in slippery conditions.  Ride quality is nice and comfortable, and this even over rougher streets.

A fuel efficient diesel option with over 200 Nm of torque is available overseas, and it remains to be seen whether it will find its way to our shores.

The Hyundai Venue is fresh and appealing, and without a doubt it looks really good too.
