This is the perfect replacement.  I mean, what is there not to like about the modern, yet rugged looks of the 2020 Land Rover Defender?  It’s what a real 4×4 Land Rover should look like, with modern day technology and a decent dollop of refinement.  I simply love it!

It’s a perfect day pottering in the mud up to your shins; the sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and, oh, the flies are really bad!  Hopping back into the new Defender, and its peace and serenity – not to mention plenty of comfort and cool air – are lifesaving.  Land Rover’s new Defender has a really decent cabin cooling system.  It very efficiently brings quick relief on a scorching hot summer’s day.  The modern cabin air filtering system creates masses of nice clean air for that serious off-road excursion you just had to be silly enough to tackle!  But then nothing ventured is nothing gained, as they say.

Other modern luxuries that make the 2020 Defender a rather nice place to spend time in are things like the stylish new 10.0-inch touchscreen and excellent infotainment system.  Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto feature as premium infotainment drivers.  You also get one of the best smartphone connecting facilities on-board the new Defender.  Bluetooth communications makes life easy for connecting with destinations and directions, not to mention the standard satellite navigation system.  People sitting in the back seats get plenty of nice fresh air, and there are even USB sockets for rear seat passengers along with a specially designed tablet holder.  A rather fascinating piece of kit that is a hit with anyone travelling on-board the defender on a serious off-road trip will be that of the Land Rover’s ClearSight Ground View technology.  This system displays the area under the bonnet and ahead of the front wheels on the dashboard-mounted screen.  This is a cool feature, and very handy for watching for any hairy obstacle.

Tackling real 4×4 journeys is what the Land Rover Defender is all about.  This is it; it’s the one; the 4×4 that will get you there come hell or high water.  Developed for the serious off-roader, the Defender is the off-roading machine at the top of the ladder.  The Defender’s underpinnings and chassis are very similar to what you’ll find in a new Range Rover of Discovery.  The suspension components have been reinforced big time, but, like the other new Land Rovers and Range Rovers, the new Defender settles for a monocoque structure where the chassis is integral with the body.  The design team at Land Rover are happy to let go of the dated separate chassis or rigid axle design in favour of the reinforced monocoque materials and a suspension with loads of travel and ground clearance.  Buying a new Defender also means that this is the model in the Land Rover showroom with the most suspension travel.

Packing a 4X4 system with loads of grip for any surface is one of the reasons people will love the new Land Rover Defender.  The 4×4 off-roader boasts a permanent 4WD system which has a Terrain Response system that allows the driver to optimise the vehicle for different terrains and conditions.  You can select the automatic setting which lets the Defender take care of things itself.  You also get diff-locking, premium hill-start assist and hill descent technologies for superb off-roading drivability and safety.

Even to start with buyers of a brand new Land Rover Defender will be able to choose from a good selection of engines.  There is a P300 petrol engine with 4-cylinders and 220 kW; a P400 petrol engine with 6-cylinders and 295 kW; a D200 diesel engine with 147 kW and a D240 diesel engine with 177 kW – both of which are 4-cylinder units.  The diesel engines are nice and torquey, while also returning a combined fuel consumption of around 6.3 litres/100 km.  All models boast an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and the lever is mounted on the dash.  The lever is mounted there so that you can seat three in the front should your requirements need a bench seat.

You also get plenty of trims and seating choices when buying new.  A luxury Defender can even come out with premium comfort leather seats and electronic adjustment and heating.  Space for occupants is excellent front and rear.  You can buy a new Defender in 90 and 110 magniloquence – where the numbers really mean that the 90 stands for 93 inches or 2362 mm long, or 110 inches or 2800 mm in length.  Obviously, with the 110 you’re going to get more passenger seats (five, six and seven-seat configurations are available for the 110) and two extra doors.  The 90 Defender is a three-door model.
