2020 Mercedes Benz EQC

A brand new SUV has arrived, and it’s called the Mercedes Benz EQC.  All electric, this is the first of a new EQ line of vehicles that Mercedes Benz will bring gradually onto the market.

The large SUV design, overall, is smooth and classy.  It’s always hard to make a large SUV look beautiful and athletic and, possibly, the new EQC does look a little frumpy when fixated on from certain angles.  At the front is a simple fascial design where the bumper corners are large and defining.  The headlights can even shine a modern blue tone, and these border the big three-point star badge.  At the rear of the EQC is a sleek set of tail lights joining in the middle with a long, narrow horizontal bar.  The huge 20 or 21-inch alloys options do look impressive.

Interior space is excellent, thanks to the clever chassis design and completely flat cabin floor.  Leg and head room is therefore very good.  Boot space is 500 litres with the rear seats in place, but you can fold these flat for even more space.  Air suspension options are available for that magic carpet ride quality – even off-road.

Driving with almost no engine noise and smooth acceleration guarantees an evocative driving experience for any regular journey.  It is hard to judge how ‘driving carefully’ is translated in driving terms, but Mercedes Benz do suggest that if the new EQC is driven quietly along you can get over 400 km on a full charge.  The other big tick for Mercedes is that they have quick charging technology that can see the batteries charged back to 80 percent or more in just 40 minutes.  In order for the speed charging you will need the beefed up charging station equipment because at home this will take much, much longer on the three-point plug – as in heaps, heaps longer.

Mercedes Benz safety systems are superb, and the new EQC will accelerate, steer and brake by itself as required.  Premium accident avoidance technology like ‘steering assist’ will steer you out of a potential collision.  Blind Spot Assist will not let you pull out in front of any hidden cars that might be lurking beyond in your blind spot areas.  Acoustic ambient protection – forward low speed audible warning for pedestrians and a reversing tone ensure the quiet EQC gets noticed ahead of time.

With a top speed limited to 180 km/h, you can tick off the first 100 of these in just 5.1 seconds from a standstill start – should you feel the urge.  The new Mercedes Benz EQC has five driving modes, where the Max Range mode delivers the most economic, regenerative drive.  One electric motor powers the rear wheels, and then another electric motor powers the front wheels.  Put together you get a combined power output of 300 kW.  Being AWD you have lots of grip for on and off-road driving.  However, it might be a bit difficult making a jerry can of fuel useful if you run out of charge anywhere remote!  You can tow a load of up to 1800 kg, making this a handy tow vehicle.  Perhaps your mate in another EQC can tow you back to the nearest charging station.

Special interior fibre optic lighting does look fantastic, and it sets the new EQC SUV cabin apart from other Mercedes Benz luxury SUV models that you can buy.  There are plenty of all the latest infotainment technologies on-board one of these, and the leather seating and cabin trim is sumptuous.  Standard models are well-equipped vehicles but, if you want to go nuts on the optional equipment list that Mercedes Benz offers its buyers, you can spend loads more money over and above the standard car price to obtain premium extras.

Base Mercedes Benz EQC models get two huge 10-inch screens across the dash as standard, making it still lone of the coolest dashes on the market.  The central touchscreen has fabulous graphics and excellent touch-control flow-and-react times.  This screen can also be controlled via the control pad between the front seats.

Mercedes uses MBUX technology, which is the latest infotainment system that Mercedes and some other German manufacturers use.  A unique feature of MBUX is its ability to learn thanks to artificial intelligence.  MBUX can be individualised and adapts to suit the user.  Its further strengths include the high-resolution Widescreen Cockpit with touchscreen operation, navigation display with augmented reality technology plus intelligent voice control with natural speech recognition.  You can activate the system with the key phrase “Hey Mercedes”.

Smartphone connectivity works remotely, so you can even preheat the cabin on a cold morning and check the remaining charge level from your living room.  Wireless charging and USB points all make life in the new EQC up-to-date.
