Just recently, Audi have updated their A4 Sedan. Now, essentially it is the same car as before but there has been some additional bits added to make it even more appealing to buyers. There are some new engines, new technology, and some design tweaks for both the interior and the exterior. Overall, the car’s roadside stance is still impressive, with slicker detailing and some interesting crimps in the car’s panelling – particularly at the front and down the sides.
Outside the 2020 car you notice a nice panel crease that starts behind the headlight and runs to the wing mirror; then it starts up again over the rear wheel arch to meet the taillight. You also get the full LED tail light cluster which is linked with a tidy chrome bar across the boot. The rear bumper has a scoopier appearance, and the twin exhaust housing has more silver trimming that looks pretty nice. At the front of the new Audi A4 Sedan is a sharp new bumper design with aggressive air intakes. The grille is massive and looks like it is ready to eat krill. Audi have taken the step to offer all the new Audi A4 models with full LED headlights which are big and offer a more simplistic, defined edge. You’ll notice a small slit at the front edge of the bonnet which is an air intake and a new design feature for the A4. It certainly looks cool, and echoes similar design cues to those used by the South Korean automotive manufacturer design teams who use these eye-catching crimps and air intakes on Kia and Hyundai models. The S-Line has more of the silver exterior mouldings to snazz things up some more.
Inside, Audi has very similar interiors to the variants this A4 replaces. That’s good because the original design and appearance is really nice. Soft touch materials and superb build quality add to the beautiful smooth and simple dash design which works very well. Great aesthetics has Audi’s new A4 ticking all the right boxes for what is one of the nicest interiors in the small-to-medium car class. USB points and 12 V sockets are nicely located in the cabin, a wireless charging pad in the centre console, and useful door bin storage space, though the glovebox is a little on the small side. Child seats are easy to fit in place on the backseat, so for small families the A4 is a nice companion.
Some of the newest features that you’ll enjoy on the latest Audi A4 base Sedan models are 17-inch alloys, three-zone climate control, cruise control with pedestrian detection and emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, electronic front seat lumbar support, heated front seats, automatic lights and automatic wipers. Cloth seats are standard.
Sport models get sportier exterior and interior features like 18-inch alloys, very comfortable leather sport seats and interior ambient lighting.
S-Line Audi A4 Sedans get some special treatment with S-Line badging, an enhanced exterior sports styling package, a sports suspension, sports seats that are part leather and part Alcantara, a sports steering wheel with a flat underside, and even an option of buying a Black Edition car in S-Line trimming.
The top of the line Audi A4 models will add things like, fully adaptive cruise control, adaptive headlights, Lane Keep Assist, adaptive suspension, a sunroof, heated seats front and rear, and a 360 degree camera for making life in the hustle-and-bustle of city life very easy.
New for 2020 has the Audi A4 boasting the latest infotainment system which has its control centre mid-dash in the form of a large HD touchscreen. There are no swivel controls on the centre console, which the previous models had, so all of the tactile control comes from the touchscreen gestures, voice command and multifunction steering wheel buttons. Audi’s graphics are very impressive, and this brand new set-up is the right follow on from the previous A4’s excellent infotainment and digital driver’s display units. 2020 sees the A4 models with a 10-inch touchscreen and a 12-inch digital driver’s display. Nice and large, round climate control swivel dials are very nice and simple to use mid-dash. Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and satellite navigation are standard features.
Out on the road the new Audi A4 is easy to get comfortable behind the steering wheel. Back seat passengers will enjoy plenty of leg and head room on the window seats. The middle seat passenger still has reasonable headroom but it will feel a little tighter for longer journeys. That said, it can carry three across the back seat. The ride is excellent around town and the 2020 Audi A4 soaks up the bumps very well. Speed things up on the open road and the A4 hugs the road really nicely and is a great drive. You can get adaptive dampering on the A4 for suspension adjustment; however the standard set up is very good.
As far as the engine goes, the 2020 Audi A4 Sedan gets a really responsive 2.0-litre turbo with 142 kW as standard. Yes, really nice to drive with plenty of zip, a decent growl when pushed, and the petrol engine is also pretty good on fuel considering the grunt available. The standard car is FWD and boasts impressive grip. Quattro models are also available, and with AWD you have some serious grip for all surfaces wet or dry. Go for the Premium Quattro model and you will get the new A4 Sedan with 185 kW, making this a seriously quick driver’s car that is perfect for the small family.
The latest Audi A4 Sedan gets 480 litres of luggage space for carrying the cargo. The back seat does come with a fold down centre gap should you need to carry longer items. This, my friends, is a very nice medium-size sedan that oozes quality and has plenty of street credential.
