BMW’s latest 3 Series just got better with the introduction of the new 2020 BMW M340i xDrive Coupe. Already one of the best small family sedans or wagons, the new 3-Series has been liked by many around the world, including us here in Australia.
From all angles the new BMW M340i xDrive Coupe looks the goods from any angle, and even the rear has been sweetly finished with 3D taillights that add an even musclier look to the chunky, yet swooping new 3 Series lines. Get side on, and you get a nice sporty profile that uses a lot of black plastic surrounds for a meaner look if you want this type of look over the glossy chrome trimmings that you can alternatively get. One of the striking features of the car’s front is that the bonnet creases really do add to the car’s muscly looks and commanding road presence. The headlights look very modern and marry with the car’s strong image. Being an M Sport car, this model also boasts deeper front spoilers and larger air scoops than many of the other models in the line-up – and you can even get the latest BMW M340i xDrive Coupe with a black kidney surrounds instead of the more traditional chrome option. In my opinion it looks really hot.
Slip into the BMW M340i xDrive Coupe’s interior and you’ll find a very modern style with a well laid out dash in typical premium BMW fashion. Seat yourself into the driver’s seat, and you’ll note the cockpit has the dash angled slightly toward you, the driver, giving you the impression that you are in total control of the drive – which you are. It is very easy to get the ideal seat position because there is so much electronic adjustment available in the seat and steering wheel. The seat itself is extremely comfortable, and remains so for longer journeys. All the panelling on the doors and dash are made of premium materials, and the fit-and-finish are superb. There are shiny trimmings and surrounds that envelop various items which look snazzy and brighten the overall cabin ambience up nicely. You get various ambience lighting for the cabin which really sets the car up beautifully – particularly at night.
The BMW M340i xDrive Coupe models get plenty of kit above the standard levels of other 3-Series cars. All round parking sensors, a reversing camera, automatic wipers, LED headlights, a lower and stiffened M Sports suspension, bigger brakes, adaptive cruise control, three-zone climate control, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with BMW’s personal assistant, a 12-inch fully digital driver’s display (one of the best), and an M-Sport steering wheel come as standard. Some of the really cool drive gear items include the limited slip differential and adaptive dampers. You do get some additional optional packs which can include things like a powered glass sunroof and memory function front seats.
Being quite a wide car, the 2020 BMW M340i xDrive Coupe offers good levels of space for three adults across the back seat. Child seats are very simple to click into place on the back seats, too. Boot space is good and measures 480 litres in the sedan form; also the back seats can be folded fully flat or in a 60:40 split. On the road the width provides superb road holding, and the underpinnings have been honed by BMW’s M division. The new BMW M340i xDrive is a hot version of the 3 Series range, sitting beneath the BMW M3 – which is the quickest of the lot. Driving enthusiasts will love the BMW M340i xDrive Coupe’s great chassis and rapid acceleration.
This is a quick car, so it’s great to know that the Euro NCAP crash tests done on the latest BMW 3 Series in 2019 found the car scored the maximum five-star safety rating. It scored very well in all categories but a particularly high 97% safety score for adult occupant protection is one of the best Euro NCAP have ever seen. Every new BMW 3 Series model comes with an Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system that incorporates pedestrian detection, as well as lane departure warning. An optional Driving Assistant Professional package loads up the car with everything safe, and it works to mitigate the likelihood of a crash by combining Active Cruise Control with Stop-and- Go, a steering and lane control assistant system, Wrong-way Warning and Cross-Traffic Alert systems to maximise its capability.
Quicker than the last generation BMW M4, the new BMW M340i xDrive Coupe boasts a 275 kW, 3.0-litre turbocharged engine which has more than enough power to satisfy all but the most demanding of enthusiasts. The 0-100 km/h dash takes just 4.4 seconds, and the M Performance four-wheel drive system launches the attack very swiftly, getting the power down on the tarmac extremely effectively.
In Australia we may also get the BMW M340i xDrive in wagon form, known as the Tourer. What a great way to get away for a long weekend with the family!
