2020 BMW X2 M35i

Love it! A sporty view of the road, good safety equipment, great comfort and quality, and decent performance and handling; that’s what the new BMW X2 M35i is all about.

The bar has just been lifted in the small/compact SUV game with the introduction of the quickest BMW X2.  Delivering striking good looks, which can be a bit hard for most SUVs to say, the new X2 motorsport (M) model fills out its wheel arches with fat rubber and has all the nice bits of chrome, flash spoilers and M-Sport badging that ensure it looks as important and imposing as any small SUV could.

Befitting the racy looks, the new BMW X2 M35i has a load of torque and plenty of horsepower to throw around.  The new performance engine is a potent 2.0-litre, twin-turbo, petrol engine that delivers 225 kW of fun.  The four-pot 2.0-litre turbo pumps out 450 Nm of torque, so with that you’ll easy mix the lemons and the milk into a curdle on the way home from the shops. BMW claim a 0-100 km/h sprint time of around 5 seconds (4.9 seconds), and it’s limited to a top speed of 250 km/h.  The AWD works with launch control to make anyone driving the Motorsport version of the X2 look hot taking off at the lights!

Fuel economy is really good for a small, AWD SUV with this much grunt.  You should expect to get, on average, less than 8 litres/100 km with a smooth everyday driving technique.  The silky, smooth eight-speed auto has a lot to do with this sporty SUV’s good fuel economy figures.  Paddle shifters are at the ready should you want to get a real Michael Schumacher driving experience.  The BMW X2 M35i is an exceptionally nice SUV to drive about. Start-stop engine technology works seamlessly, and if you’re not needing a bigger SUV’s space then an X2 is easy to live with, particularly this model with AWD grip and hefty grunt.

Of course, with AWD and being ‘motor-sported’ up under the skin, the sporty BMW X2 M35i has a sport suspension (lowered by 10 mm, and with firmer springs and dampers) along with an M Sport differential on the front axle, giving it a real responsive driving experience all-round.  You can set the driving mode setting to Comfort should you want to relax and take things easy, which is a nice option to have from time-to-time.

Performance aside, the new X2 M35i looks really nice.  It’s well-proportioned, causing quite a distraction for onlookers; and you find that pulling into a gas station draws admiring looks.  You can get the 2020 BMW X2 M35i in an array of different colours (six in total), and the sparkling Misano Blue is quite exceptional I have to say.

Infotainment systems in a BMW are pretty decent.  Whizzing through the apps, jumping from one feature to another is easy, and BMW has its central screen offering touch, menu buttons and a manual iDrive swivel control.  High definition graphics look superb for the central dash screens, and you are treated to a quality modern drive in the new X2. The analogue driver’s display is typically BMW elegance.

Some other features include: LED DRLs, seven-speaker audio, dual-zone automatic climate control, a keyfob (all doors) remote keyless entry, fog/driving lights, heated mirrors, rain sensing wipers, a superb navigation system, 3 x 12V power outlets, cruise control, a power tailgate, adaptive headlights, electrochromic mirrors, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, wireless smartphone connection and charging, and Park Distance Control Parking assist.

Safety for the 2020 BMW X2 is excellent, and the full Monty of safety features ensures that when driving in a new X2 you will be in one of the safest small, compact SUVs on the road.  ABS brakes, stability control, front-impact airbags, side impact airbags for the front and rear seats, overhead airbags, knee airbags, seat-belt pre-tensioners, a security system with an ignition disable device are standard, and the X2 body-shell is very strong in a full frontal impact.

Exquisite panelling for the interior trim, touches of chrome or aluminum, leather materials or wood veneers all make the new BMW X2 M35i interior options rather special.  New car buyers will enjoy the choice on offer so that they can drive away in a new BMW X2 with all the colours and trims they like – adding that extra margin of quality choice which keeps cars like BMW, Volvo, Audi and Mercedes up in the highly desirable league.

Far from being ostentatious, BMW’s new X2 M35i has a way of giving its occupants enough motorsport flair without getting crass and over the top.  Its leather sports seats are figure hugging, supportive and comfortable, but they also look nice too, with accented stitching, M-Sport badging, and electronic controls for adjustment and heating making them superb seats for the whole family to enjoy.  BMW’s Magma Red interior color option is hot! Do check it out – probably goes better with a black, grey or white exterior, but that’s in my opinion.

Better practicality is a selling point for SUVs.  Generally roomier than a hatchback, you should experience better luggage carrying ability in a small SUV.  The sporty BMW X2 shape boasts 470 litres of luggage space with the rear seats upright.  Potentially, in a new X2 the luggage space is not quite up to the mark of some of its rivals.  Just take a look at the latest Mazda  CX-5 with its 506 litres, and the Volkswagen Tiguan with its 615 litres.  This just puts the X2 luggage space in perspective.  It’s still very useful, however, and the rear seats a split-folding and lie nice and flat for when more luggage space is required.

So, there are other small and compact SUVs on the market.  There is, of course BMW’s own X1.  Volvo has their nice new XC40, while Audi is well catered for in this market segment with their new Q3.  VW’s Tiguan is a practicality/comfort king; and don’t forget to try the new Mazda CX-5 – as it is a really nice looker, popular and safe.

However, if you want the raciest looking one with loads of performance, then the BMW X2 M35i is the winner.  It’s pretty decently priced, and depending on the level of options you can have it for well under $80k.
