2020 Discovery Sport

Being a face lift model, there are some notable improvements to the 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport, which have made it a whole lot better.  New LED light technology, new alloy wheel designs, a redesigned bumper at the back, a redesigned grille at the front (chunkier with more muscle) and tweaks to the smoother headlight arrangement.  There are some really nice comfort, infotainment and driver aid improvements, all adding up to make this a very nice, comfortable family SUV.

Your standard Land Rover Discovery Sport boasts some pretty decent features; so you’ll find dual-zone climate control, a 10-inch infotainment screen, a strong audio package, keyless start, front and rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera, all of which are some of the features on the base Discovery Sport S model.  One thing that is great right across the board is the infotainment graphics and colours, and I particularly like the dual-zone climate controls and the driving mode controls found centre dash and below the touch screen.  These are excellent and easy to use.  Great job Land Rover!  Wireless charging, a USB point in front of the gear lever, two USB sockets and a 12V socket in the glovebox, and a mobile device connection point for rear seat passengers all add up to making the new Discovery Sport a phone connectivity, infotainment hot spot hub.

A powered tailgate, heated door mirrors, heated front seats with 12-way adjustment, a leather interior, satellite navigation, scrolling indicators, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard on models further up the ladder.  Top of the range HSE and SE Discovery Sports get a fully digital driver’s display.  It is true that the higher-end Discovery Sport models even look a little classier.

The new Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE models are the top of the range, and they are a really nice vehicle to drive.  They sit on 20-inch alloys and look sharp enough for any high-society congregation.  A Meridian audio system and adaptive cruise control are part of the classy HSE package, but features like signature DRLs, heated door mirrors, an interactive driver display, a ClearSight interior rear view mirror, 14-way electric memory front seats with 2-way manual headrests, Ebony Windsor leather seats, Connected Navigation Pro, a Drive Pack with Traffic Sign Recognition and adaptive speed limiting all deliver a ride that is first class and comfortable.

R-Dynamic models get a sportier looking exterior, as well as interior, and this would be the one I’d like.  I reckon it looks pretty nice with the wider alloys and deeper front air dam.

Down to practicality, the 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport comes up trumps.  There are loads of decent storage compartments about the cabin.  The door bins are massive.  Driving comfort is superb; so, in the latest model, loads of steering wheel adjustment combined with driver seat height adjustment delivers the perfect driving position for all manner of body shapes.  Boot space is tiny with the third row seats in place, however, when these are folded flat, the luggage space is huge!

As far as driving goes, the 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport is very easy to drive around town, and there is really good visibility right around the vehicle – thanks aplenty to the high SUV ride height.  Smooth and comfortable are words that come to mind while travelling in a new Land Rover Discovery Sport.  The seats are made for travelling long distances, so life in this SUV is pretty darn nice.

Those in the back seats will find that the Land Rover Discovery Sport accommodates its occupants extremely well.  There is loads of space in the second row, where this rear seat reclines and can be slid forward or back.  Head and knee room are very good!  This would have to be one of the best in its class in terms of passenger comfort and space.  Isofix points are very easy to use, and loading child seats into the Discovery Sport is a piece of cake.

The Discovery Sport offers seven seats, so when the third row is in place there is space to carry a couple of smaller people.  There are other vehicles that provide better third row seats for bigger people (Santa Fe), but I’ll put in a word here that the Land Rover Discovery Sport is one of the best vehicles for a growing family.

A 177 kW 2.0-litre turbo-diesel, AWD 8-speed automatic is the top engine found in the HSE.  0-100 km/h can be performed in around eight seconds for this model.  Another turbo-diesel is rated at 132 kW and is found in the SE model.  Base model S versions come equipped with the 110 kW turbo-diesel, which is a willing and surprisingly efficient engine.

There are two petrol engines available for the new Discovery Sport.  So the S model gets a smooth 147 kW, AWD, automatic, while the SE gets the 184 kW, AWD, automatic set up.

You’ll need around $60k to get into the base model S, and a bit over $80k for the HSE.  When considering the type of vehicle, the comfort on offer, the off-road potential, the practicality and the cruising potential, this will be money well spent if you’re after a luxurious and spacious family SUV.
