2020 Mini JCW cars

So did you know that there are a number of JCW Mini’s you can buy in 2020?  Each model has a special flavour, but they all do one thing very well: they honk down the road at lightning speed while giving their driver’s loads to smile about.  Their cute looks and superior build quality have their owners enjoying a quick drive out on the motorway or an efficient, stylish drive about town.  2020 sees all the latest technology available to the new Mini JCW buyer, and the safety is second to none in these tough little speedsters.

Let’s start with the Mini John Cooper Works 3-door Hatch.  Under the bonnet is 170 kW of potential energy, which becomes reality at the push of a button.  There is also 320 Nm of torque available from nice and low-down in the engine revs.  The car boasts a 137 g/km CO₂ emission rating and has a combined fuel consumption figure around 6.0 litres/100 km.  You can run onto a top speed of 246 km/h via a six-speed manual or eight-speed auto option.  The little hot hatch sits on a nice set of 18-inch alloys and definitely looks the part out on the road.

Like to live life with the top down?  The 2020 Mini John Cooper Works Convertible also has the 170 kW and 320 Nm engine to get you from A-to-B in no time at all.  Rated with a 144 g/km of CO₂ emissions (on average) and a combined approximate of 6.3 litres/100 km for fuel efficiency, this is a wee convertible with attitude and spunk that’s light on the environmental impact.  You can run up to a top speed of 240 km/h on the right piece of road via the smooth six-speed manual or eight-speed auto.  You’re running on 18-inch alloys that look snazzy and capture the onlooker’s attention – particularly with that showy drive-by with the top down low.

2020 Mini JCW Clubman

There is a big step up in power for the next two JCW Minis.  The Mini John Cooper Works Clubman comes with an estate body shape, so with that style comes more boot space.  The AWD traction is superb on any surface, and in the wet the Clubman hangs on surefootedly.  The 225 kW of power is backed by a very strong 450 Nm of torque, which is available even from way down low in the engine revs.  A limited top speed of 250 km/h is impressive, while the 0-100 km/h sprint can be over in a mere 4.9 seconds!  This is a quick car, and yet with a carbon emission of just 175 g/km and a combined fuel consumption of less than 8 litres/100 km it offers commendable green value to its massive street cred.  The Clubman uses the slick eight-speed auto and paddle shifters to keep the engine singing the right note for any drive.  Of the JCW variants, this is would be my pick.  I love the grunt, the class, the style and the cargo space.

Both the Clubman (above) and the Mini John Cooper Works Countryman sit on really classy 19-inch alloys.  Like the Clubman, the Countryman is also AWD, but it goes further and offers a raised ride height and the largest boot of all the performance Minis.  If you’re going to be travelling along country roads, gravel tracks and muddy fields on a regular basis, then the Countryman’s higher ride height takes all these tasks in its stride.  The whopping 225 kW of zip and a maximum of 450 Nm of torque allow you to hit the ground running every time.  Both the JCW Clubman and Countryman really know how to upset bigger, larger sports cars; easily showing them up more often than not.  Again, the huge dose of JCW performance is awesome, but the muscle lands lightly on the wallet, with a combined fuel consumption of less than 8 litres/100 km being possible.  As with any car, the more time you spend with your right foot on the floor, the more the car will drink.  The Countryman’s AWD ballistic performance is addictive, so you have been warned.  Even with the slightly higher ride height, the new Mini John Cooper Works Countryman still hugs the road beautifully, and with the 19-inch rubber doing a great job of sticking like glue to the road, this one is deceptively quick (0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds and a governed top speed of 250 km/h).

Performance and safety can go hand in hand.  Only the Mini JCW Convertible has four airbags; all other models come with six airbags.  An ABS braking system, cornering brake control (CBC), dynamic stability control (DSC), dynamic traction control (DTC), electronic differential lock control (EDLC), an emergency call button, a handy tool kit, conventional cruise control (Hatch and Convertible), adaptive cruise control (Clubman and Countryman), city crash mitigation (CCM), pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, parking sensors front and rear, parking assistance for parallel parking, a reversing camera, a speed limit display and speed sign recognition all come as standard items on your new performance Mini.  LED headlights with daytime running lights come as standard, and the ‘follow me home’ function as well as a rain detection system keeps you safe and well looked after.

2020 Mini JCW Interiors

Any of the JCW Minis offer comfortable seating for four adults.  You can fit a fifth in the middle rear seat, but it wouldn’t be much fun back there for longer trips.  On the practical side, the Countryman (450 litres) and Clubman (360 litres) offer the better space for carrying luggage.  Both the Countryman and Clubman come with roof rails as standard, boast electronic multi-adjustment for the front seats (which can also be heated), and they also get an electronic tailgate.

All JCW variants have excellent front sports seats with great lateral support and excellent comfort.  You’ll find a nice cloth material used for the seats in the Hatch and Convertible; the other two boast punched leather.  Both seating material selections look very smart and classy.  All variants get a 3-spoke John Cooper Works sports leather steering wheel with multi-function controls mounted for easy access.  Automatic climate control keeps you as snug as you need to be on an icy cold winter’s day.  At the other end of the spectrum, the automatic climate control blows a wonderful current of fresh cold air throughout the cabin on a hot and sticky summer’s day.  Obviously, the Convertible has the added bonus of flipping back the roof – and what a great way of blasting down the motorway with the top down!

As far as the level of ‘bells and whistles’ that you get in a 2020 Mini JCW car, you’re going to get a wonderful level of decent standard equipment.  There are some extra options available, but as standard each new 2020 Mini JCW variant has an 8.8-inch circular touchscreen in the centre, which looks the most attractive of any system in any new car (My opinion).  Real time traffic navigation, satellite navigation, Mini Connect, a Head-Up Display, a mind-blowing 12 speaker Harman Kardon HiFi audio system, wireless Apple CarPlay, DAB and Digital radio, USB and 12V connections are some of the features you’ll be enjoying in these cars.  Bluetooth streaming for phone calls, music and other Apps is part of the standard set-up as well.
