Here is a cracking new BMW that looks the business and hosts plenty of new technology to go along with the strapping power output. The 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe also comes with plenty of upgrades and options for matching the particular colour and trim level you’ll want for your very own 4 Series Coupe.
This new generation model has sort of mellowed in the styling area, where it harks back to the large kidney grilles found on the very early BMWs. The bold grille is big and drops from the bonnet lip to the road surface like a large grader blade ready to eat up slower moving cars with a scary candidness. That said, I reckon it adds some elegance to the new 4 Series design, where I think it looks nicer and better balanced than the previous version. The big grille also has the look of the car visually sitting lower to the ground. The rear-end design remains similar to the outgoing model; and I’m glad because I am a great fan of the slim taillight clusters and big, fat exhaust outlets. A sharper looking LED signature head and tail lighting design graces the new 4 Series Coupe. Nice work BMW!
The standard seat trim level for the 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe comes with high-quality SensaTec fabric. You can easily upgrade to Vernasca leather. Some other cushy, warm trim options include open-pore oak, maple, or ash trim; or, for the more contemporary look, the tetragon/mesh aluminium trim effects give a modern style inside the cabin.
BMW carries over everything you’ll find in the current 3 Series cars, so you’ll notice the same BMW Live Cockpit and iDrive options look familiar. The climate controls live in the same place, as do the drive mode buttons. BMW’s latest infotainment systems slot right into the new 4 Series Coupe and, thus, boast wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 5.1-inch instrument cluster digital driver’s display, built-in navigation and an 8.8-inch touchscreen in the centre dash. These standard versions are upgradable to a larger 12.3-inch digital driver’s cluster and a 10.3-inch centre-dash touchscreen with the Premium or Executive packages. BMW’s iDrive 7 infotainment software runs all the above features and it links all these with their intuitive interface with a console-mounted click-wheel controller for easy usability while driving. Of course, those who prefer to interact directly via the touchscreens can do so. A head-up display, wireless charging, a wi-fi hotspot and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system are premium features you’re going to enjoy.
New 4 Series models look to be strong on safety, with key safety features including things like a standard automated emergency braking feature with pedestrian detection, a standard lane-departure warning system with lane-keeping assist, and an adaptive cruise control feature with a semi-autonomous driving mode. BMW’s Active Driving Assistant suite of features is standard on every 2021 4 Series Coupe. This package combines lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, automatic high beams, as well as front and rear automatic emergency braking. The Driving Assistance Professional package builds on the standard active safety technologies with features like traffic jam assist, evasion assist, front cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist with side collision avoidance being part of this upgrade.
So what lies under the bonnet of a new 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe? The engines that are available start with the BMW 420i Coupe, which delivers what most will find quite satisfying: 135 kW between 5000 and 6500 rpm marries well with the gorgeous swell of 300 Nm of torque that’s available from 1350 rpm all the way up to 4000 rpm. This is the most frugal of the new BMW 4 Series Coupe variants, however the 0-100 km/h sprint can be performed in around 7.5 seconds and you can run onto a top speed of 240 km/h.
Next in line comes the 2.0-liter turbo I-4 petrol unit that is known as the 430i and 430i xDrive versions. xDrive, of course, means AWD, while the ones without the xDrive lettering are RWD. This engine runs with the superb eight-speed automatic transmission. With 190 kW of peak power combining with 400 Nm of torque, there’s plenty of get-up-and-go. Fuel efficiency for this nice looking Coupe is very good, ranging from around 10 litres/100 km in the city to around 7 litres/100 km out on the highways and byways.
The BMW M440i xDrive uses the 3.0-liter turbo I-6 petrol unit that’s linked to the eight-speed automatic. It’s quick and energetic, with the AWD chassis making light work of any road surface. Feeding anything up to 285 kW and 494 Nm out to all four wheels, this variant can really fly when required too. Fuel consumption usually sits anywhere between 11 and 7.5 litres/100 km, depending on how much right foot action goes on. This engine also uses a 48V mild-hybrid system, so you’ll also be able to recoup power via the electric excess created in the car’s “Sport” driving mode – a win, win!
The standard 4 Series Coupe suspension with its aluminium shock absorber housings offers you a comfortable, safe and supportive ride. However, an Adaptive M Suspension is standard on the M440i xDrive, optional on the other models. Comfort, Sport, and Adaptive modes allow the steering, damping, and acceleration to be adjusted perfectly to suit different road conditions. The adaptive suspension can even use navigation map data to anticipate the requirements for upcoming corners and tricky road features.
As a new generation 4 Series Coupe, this is a superb result. The car also boasts a lower centre of gravity and a lower ride height. In short, the new 4 Series Coupe is a very dynamic car to drive and is happy being flung through the corners and changing direction at speed. It sets itself up as a benchmark sports-luxury Coupe packed with superb handling, style and modern technology.
