2021 BMW 7-Series Hybrid

The 2021 BMW 7-Series Hybrid makes quite the big luxury-sedan statement in the way it oozes class, refinement and new technology.  BMW also produce the Rolls Royce, so they know all about creating a car that has prestigious luxury.  What BMW have provided in the latest 7-Series is a gorgeous big motorway cruiser with premium comfort at a fraction of the cost of an RR.  Big BMW sedans have always been about cutting edge technology and lots of power and comfort.  The latest 7-Series has all that but with the added environmental green tick of approval.

2021 BMW 7-Series Hybrid

There are essentially three models of the new 2021 7-Series available, but the one I reckon you should go for is this one.  Having experienced the big 7 Hybrid, you’ll see what I mean.  It glides around town effortlessly in electric mode, and when you do need to give it the boot for some more acceleration, there’s a nice growl from the engine and gobs of power on tap.  You can’t help but enjoy the cabin opulence, spearheaded by the sweet power delivery and decent fuel efficiency.

All things considered, the 2021 BMW 745e and 745eL have to be rated as the best large luxury hybrid sedan on the market.  The only thing letting it down is the price, really.  Known as the BMW 745e xDrive iPerformance, the plug-in hybrid 7 Series has been given one or two unique interior accents to set it apart from the other models.  However, on the outside it looks like the other 7-Series cars, now boasting the latest styling where the bonnet is 50 mm taller than before, the front grille is bigger and the headlights have been slimmed down for a sharper stare.  The new side skirts, chrome additions and a thinner LED tail-light strip create a nice visual statement in big 2021 BMW style.

Riding inside the new 7-Series has you cosseted in comfort and refinement.  The adaptive suspension works wonderfully to absorb and soften any hint of the passing road bumps outside, making life very tranquil for its occupants.  360-degree parking cameras make city parking a breeze, there is wireless smartphone charging and soft-closing doors.  The seats are exceptionally comfortable, and there is plenty of adjustability front and rear, with quick heating and cooling functions as standard.  And, as standard, the 2021 BMW 7-Series is soaked with seriously luxurious equipment.

However, there are even more optional packages available for the new-car buyer.  The Autobahn package adds rear-wheel steering for better handling and a tighter turning circle, as well as an upgraded adaptive suspension that pre-emptively adjusts to match the road conditions ahead.  The Driving Assistance Professional package adds adaptive cruise control with enhanced highway driving aids and an improved lane-keeping assist system.  The adaptive LED headlights make a great job of keeping the road well-lit for night travel, though there is an upgrade to laser headlights.    A ‘Rear Seat Entertainment Experience’ adds two 10.1-inch infotainment screens in the rear, with another tablet with which to control them.  For those of you who want to travel business class in the rear, then the ‘Rear Seat Comfort Package Plus’ adds two first-class, airline-style chairs aimed at transporting VIPs in complete luxury.  The Luxury Rear Seating package adds power-adjustable ventilated rear seats, massaging rear seats and a rear-mounted tablet for controlling on-board features.

Other nice items that come as standard on the new BMW 7-Series, including the hybrid model, are: 420 litres of boot space, an adaptive air suspension, LED headlights, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, a digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with navigation, Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, heated front seats, heated armrests a heated steering wheel, 16-way power-adjustable front seats, keyless entry and ignition, four-zone automatic climate control and a power-sliding panoramic glass roof.  The control buttons, switches and knobs are still among the best and most intuitive in any car, let alone a premium luxury model.

The 2021 BMW 7-Series Hybrid isn’t short on power, which is rated at 290 kW.  It pairs a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine with an electric motor and battery pack for plenty of muscle from a standstill or for highway passing manoeuvres.  The engine power is delivered to the AWD system through an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and the big sedan can run through the 0-100 km/h dash in around 5 seconds.  The top speed has been governed to 250 km/h.  Meanwhile, official CO2 emissions are down to 45 and 54g/km for the 745e and 745Le respectively.  Boasting a potential fuel economy of 1.67 litres/100 km and 2.0 litres/100 km, respectively for the two models, living with the big hybrid 7 is a rather pleasant experience.  The new 7-Series Hybrid has a 12 kWh battery and can return between 46 and 52 km of electric, zero-emissions range; though in real-world driving conditions you can expect around 40 km all electric.  The new 7-Series Hybrid is also capable of speeds up to 110 km/h without assistance from the on-board combustion engine.

Handling for the big sedan is very secure and grippy, with body roll evident from the comfort-oriented luxury sedan.  The 7 Series Hybrid model is slightly heavier than the other models, too, which is due to the inclusion of the battery pack.  When all is said and done, the sedan brakes extremely well with strong power and consistency even under hard emergency situations.  The steering is nicely weighted at any speeds, while it feels particularly well-assisted in tight parking manoeuvres about town.

On the safety front: this is a flagship BMW and safety is a given.  Things like front, side and curtain airbags come as standard.  Parking sensors, a surround-view camera system, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and forward collision mitigation are some of the premium features that come as standard.

Buying a new Hybrid BMW flagship isn’t the cheapest activity, but if you can afford one you’ve got yourself a truly superb drive.  BMW offer a 24-hour roadside assistance for four years with an unlimited mileage when you buy one of these cars new. The sixth-generation BMW 7 Series is arguably about the best big luxury sedan around.  There really aren’t any other Hybrid models available that come close to the very complete 7-Series.  Mercedes have just brought out their rival, but that is way pricier.  The other alternatives that are considerably cheaper, and worth a look, would be Volvo’s excellent S90 T8 (a bit smaller in dimensions but performs very well) and the Lexus ES 300h (way down on power but boasting an impeccable cabin).
