Want the ultimate luxury RAV4? If you answered yes, then maybe you need to check out Lexus’s stable of cars. The Lexus NX is a lavishly appointed small-to-medium SUV with loads of comfort, plenty of style and all the latest and desirable technology. 2021 Lexus NX SUVs have all the new features that make them right up to date and modern.
It’s a fairly expensive luxury SUV, however it does come with the coveted Lexus badge, a striking and sweeping SUV design, great equipment levels and a hybrid drivetrain. This sort of premium packaging gets the new Lexus NX right up alongside an Audi Q5 or a BMW X3. In the small NX’s favour is the car’s genuine hybrid motoring prowess. If you want a small luxury SUV with full hybrid technology, then look no further than an NX. But if you take a few steps back down the ladder, away from the Lexus NX, then you will find hybrid tech in the Toyota RAV4 or the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which are both good vehicles but just not as cool or luxurious. However, I have not mentioned the Volvo XC60 until now; and that is because the XC60 is also arguably the best mid-size luxury SUV – and it also comes with hybrid technology. Lexus, Audi or Volvo? I’ll leave the choice to you.
But now, more on Lexus’s stylish NX; the 2021 Lexus NX has that huge king-sized front grill, and the smart, sleek headlights at the front. The NX face is unmistakable and distinct, and very classy. Around the back of the vehicle is a continuation of the NX’s sleek appearance that finishes up at a nice slim rear windowpane and artistically swept taillights. There is no doubt that if you pull up at the boardroom meeting in a new Lexus NX that you’ll be making a classy statement.
Inside the new NX cabin is a beautiful soft leather-wrapped dashboard, door panels, console and seats. The NX is full of class, and even the buttons have that solid, classy feel. The front seats are arguably the best in class (Volvo seats are nice, too), where they provide lovely support as well as being more comfortable than just about any similarly-priced SUV alternative. Back seat space is quite good, too; the lack of a floor hump makes life comfortable and spacious for three adults. Rear seat passengers enjoy beautifully crafted leather seats, auxiliary points for tech connections and excellent leg and head room. Lexus NX occupants are sure to enjoy their travel time.
As standard on all NX models you get: a 10.3-inch infotainment screen with a Lexus remote touch-pad controller, a reversing camera, DAB digital radio, adaptive cruise control, climate control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, satellite navigation, SUNA live traffic alerts, a 10-speaker DVD audio system that includes a digital amp, 2 USB points, 1 AUX input, dual zone climate control air conditioning, NuLux leather trim, heated and power operated front seats, a self-dimming interior mirror, a smart start and push button start, an electric park brake, Enform App Suite, Miracast, a mobile assistant, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity, multimedia voice control, power steering column adjustment, a rear armrest with cupholders, a 4.2-inch MID screen, touch-sensitive interior dome and map lights, and a driving mode select feature for ECO, NORMAL and SPORT.
F Sport models get some striking sporty flavours throughout the interior, while the Sports Luxury models add features like: a driver’s seat with three memory positions, ventilated front seats, wireless mobile charging, SPORT+ and CUSTOM drive modes, a driver’s seat power lumbar adjustment, a heated steering wheel, a leather accented interior with Shimamoku ornamentation, a 14-speaker Mark Levinson sound system with 980 W and a Subwoofer and Clari-Fi, a colour head-up display, a tilt and slide moonroof, and power-folding rear seats where the outer rear seats have a heating function. The Crafted Edition models get nice interior design tweaks and individual choice as well as a Smart Key Card.
The new Lexus NX is a practical small-to-mid-size SUV with 60/40 split fold rear seats. Luggage capacity behind the rear seats equates to 500 litres. This grows to 1545 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded flat. On-board the Lexus is a smart multimedia system which features wireless charging. The car easily connects with your mobile phone so that you can lock or unlock the doors, set the cabin temperatures and remotely start the SUV from your phone at a distance.
Under the bonnet you have the choice of a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder hybrid engine or a 2.0-litre turbo petrol. In the Lexus NX 300h, a technologically advanced 2.5 litre 4 cylinder Atkinson cycle engine works together with high output electric motors to deliver 147 kW of power. A CVT with six stepped ratios offers you smooth power delivery. 300h models should return real world economy figures of well under 7.5 litres/100 km, depending on you travel and style of driving. In the Lexus NX300 you have a special 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbocharged powerplant that is coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission. Power in the 300 is rated at an impressive 175 kW, with 350 Nm of torque always ready to perform. In this guise you should expect average fuel consumption figures of less than 10-litres/100 km.
Performance body dampers are located in the front and rear of the Lexus NX F Sport and Sports Luxury models and they increase the vehicle’s overall stability while suppressing road vibration very well. The 2021 Lexus NX 300 ride is firm – maybe even a bit too firm for some.
German rivals with the same level of kit will be pricier. Get ahead of the game and drive a new Lexus NX.
