Stepping up to the plate and then handling the pitch that Mazda has hurled the way of the small/compact SUV market is proving tough to cope with. If sales are anything to go by, the little Mazda with its CX-3 curve ball is doing very well. The 2021 CX-3 is still based on the small Mazda 2 hatchback and offers a higher riding position and FWD. It’s very hard to find any faults with this wee car; the looks are superb, the build quality excellent, practicality very good, features top notch and safety class leading. It’s a hard job for the others to keep step, and that’s including cars from Mercedes Benz and Audi, not to mention the handy little Mitsubishi ASX – a handy small SUV/compact-crossover alternative.
The nice flowing lines of the CX-3 exterior are matched up with a pleasantly simple interior design that functions very well. Higher-end models boast softer surfaces and leather seats which always go a long way to bringing a premium feel to the fore. The 2021 Mazda CX-3 accommodates taller people well with the wide range of adjustability in the front seats and a decent level of practical space and cubby holes for storage. The driver has no problems finding a driving position that is well set up for their particular size and shape. To get into the rear seats is nice and easy, thanks mainly to the doors being able to open to almost 80 degrees as well as the higher ride height. The taller CX-3 body also benefits rear seat space for adults, and the rear seats are well designed with plenty of padding for decent comfort.
Throughout the cabin are handy storage compartments, and the door bins can take a bottle of water. Loading the boot with luggage is respectably easy thanks to the gate opening nice and high and the space being very square. Cargo capacity is rated at a reasonable 264 litres, which grows to 1174 litres once the back seats have their 60/40 split folding sections both down fully flat.
So, the 2021 Mazda CX-3 range starts off with the Neo Sport model which will set you back around $25k new, and that’s very reasonable when you factor in the level of equipment that comes as standard on this base model. Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), a reverse camera, a 7.0-inch centre touchscreen with Apple Car Play/Android Auto connectivity, an MZD Connect multimedia system, centre console bin/armrest, an electric park brake with a hill-hold function, electric folding mirrors, digital radio, six airbags, engine stop/start, rear parking sensors, cruise control, air-conditioning, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming capability, internet radio integration, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and two USB ports are all features that come as standard. And the little Neo Sport also sits proudly on a set of 215/60R16 tyres.
Cross traffic alert, satellite navigation, auto headlamps and rain sensing wipers find their way into the new Mazda CX-3 Maxx Sport, which is next up the model ladder. Get yourself into the Maxx Sport LE and you start to get the trim and panelling covered in softer Alcantara leather along with partial leather seats. You also get a nice smooth six-speed automatic gearbox doing the gear changing for you, instead of the six-speed manual found in the two previously mentioned models.
Akari models add front and side cameras, heated mirrors, driver’s seat lumbar support adjustment and memory functions and distance control. Top of the range Akari LE models add Nappa leather trim and Nappa leather seating into the mix.
Under the bonnet, and across the entire 2021 CX-3 range, sits a perky petrol-fed 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-G DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder VVT motor that puts out 110 kW of poke, and 195 Nm of torque at 2800 rpm. These numbers work well together and suit the compact crossover size well. Up and underway the new Mazda CX-3 rides commendably well and easily keeps up with motorway speeds. The noise level is also well muted and shows some of the ‘so called’ luxury rivals up in this department as well as in the way the little Mazda CX-3 pootles about cheerfully and dynamically.
So if you like your hatchbacks with a jacked up suspension that stands taller on the road and stands out in a crowd, then the Mazda CX-3 has to be on your shopping list to at least check out. Each new Mazda CX-3 comes with a 5 year/unlimited km warranty and 5 years of roadside assist should you need them.
