Now here is one of the neatest small sedans that money can buy. Yes, it’s stylish and yes it can go like stink, but there is so much to like about the 2021 Mercedes Benz A-Class Sedan that one wonders where to start.
Mercedes Benz has needed to keep themselves at the top of their game. The gap between motoring quality and luxury has closed tightly over the last few years, and there are many good cars out there to choose between. However, Mercedes Benz has managed to step it up again and show the rest of the world that it has the benchmark compact car. I for one won’t argue with that!
So, the 2021 Mercedes Benz A-Class Sedan delivers on all fronts but, without a doubt, the styling inside the small luxury sedan is impressive on all accounts. The quality, innovative design and new technology leave you breathless. Slip inside the A-Class and the first thing that strikes you is the double width touchscreen set to the left of the driver and in the centre dash. Nothing matches the new Mercedes interior look that is also seen in the latest S-Class cars. In the centre of the dash are the three silver, circular air vents which swivel and control air flow, but across the driver’s side half of the dash is a huge digital display screen that is very classy and again sets new standards.
You get a steering wheel with mounted switchgear for controlling the driver’s digital instrument display. Voice recognition, digital dials and large display screens help amplify the luxury-tech experience. A Head-Up display is standard; and the touchpad on the centre console has you intuitively controlling the information shown on the multimedia display in much the same way that you would on a smartphone. The touchpad can even recognise your handwriting should you wish to enter addresses or phone numbers silently.
Mercedes calls the latest bout of technology MBUX and it’s a new car game breaker along with big advancements in how the driver and front passenger interact with the car. Drivers of the new A-Class can control the MBUX infotainment system via the huge HD touchscreen, the touch pad on the centre console, by voice control and also via touch controls on the steering wheel.
The 2021 Mercedes Benz A-Class Sedan comes with optional packages like: the Vision package upgrade which ups the head lighting and cabin ambience, audio upgrade for even more amazing sound, the seat comfort package which adds heated seats, and there is even various AMG Sports and Exclusive packages to really make your new A-Class a head-turner. As standard kit, you do get to enjoy two seven-inch infotainment screens, as well as DAB radio and satellite navigation, real-time traffic information, a wide range of active safety equipment and a brand new A-Class unique seven-speed automatic gearbox.
Safety options for the all new Mercedes Benz A-Class are superb, with features like active distance assist control, adaptive cruise control, traction control, auto braking functions, pedestrian recognition, blind spot monitoring, lane assist and the full array of front, side and curtain airbags all A-Class strengths. The new satellite navigation display is a real safety feature because the directions are overlaid to the image ahead that the cameras are picking up ahead of the car in real time, so you’ll never make a wrong turn again!
On the road, the new small Mercedes A-Class Sedan feels really in touch with the road. It’s enjoyable to drive and smooth. Ride quality is excellent, and the cabin remains serene even at high speeds. The A-Class boasts a comfortable ride that delivers accurate road handling and control that makes it an extremely rewarding car to drive.
Boot space a particularly useful 405 litres with the rear seats in place. This drops to 315 litres for the A 250 e plug-in hybrid version because the battery pack is situated under the boot floor. The sedan’s boot lid opens wide and has a low loading height. The large flat floor makes for excellent cargo space and the boot hinges are well concealed. You also find that the rear seats can fold down with a 40/20/40 split fold design, giving you very handy additional flexibility.
As the entry point to Mercedes-Benz, the A-Class boasts a reasonable choice of engines for their compact sedan and hatchback range. The range starts off with the 100 kW/200 Nm front-drive A180. A 2.0-litre turbo petrol packs 165 kW/350 Nm and is one of my favourite small car engines. Hybrid technology is found in the A250e, where a mix of 75 kW petrol and 43 kW of electric combine to provide 118 kW at its fullest. This hybrid is, of course, the most frugal in the range and thus can run with incredibly low fuel consumption. This is the perfect motor if you find yourself doing a whole lot of congested city driving. The real speedster in the group is the hot little A35 AMG Sedan with 225 kW or power and 400 Nm of torque. These are sensational power figures that make it a real thrill for those who like to cover the ground quickly. Both the A35 AMG and the A250 will sprint through the 0-100 km/h dash in less than 7 seconds.
Based on a space-efficient front-drive platform, the A-Class does well in providing for passengers and their luggage and drives with the poise and comfort that are hallmarks of the brand. Five-star Euro NCAP safety, quality, comfort and equipment levels are all up to the expected 2021 Mercedes Benz standards. This all new A-Class Sedan looks very nice and is a great alternative to anyone looking for a small car with premium luxury.
