2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Want a PHEV? What is a PHEV? Why would you buy a PHEV?  Let’s take a quick look at the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV to find out a bit about a PHEV vehicle and to realise how spacious inside, quiet about town and economical (if you have somewhere to charge it) the latest Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is.

Hop into the GSR or Exceed Outlander PHEVs and there is plenty of chrome detailing and leather upholstery to greet you.  The ES PHEV settles for cloth upholstery, which is quite a nice and smart cloth material, nice and tactile, smart and comfortable.  The dash has been laid out sensibly and clearly on the Outlander, while some soft-touch materials are dotted around the fascia.  One of the major differences that you need to get used to is that the Outlander PHEVs have a large silver joystick that replaces the more conventional gear lever, and there are some PHEV-specific readouts and information displays on the dash.  The 7-inch touchscreen is a comprehensive infotainment system, and once you’ve learnt its ways and methods of doing things it functions very well.  It sits on the top of the centre console and comes with DAB digital radio, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.  Your satellite navigation can come via your own smartphone connection, and that’s good because your smartphone delivers a pretty good navigation system with voice control.  The Exceed model get all the bells and whistles, so adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree parking camera, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, LED headlights, heated leather seats, a heated steering wheel, rear USB ports and rear cross traffic alert are some of the nice features.  The Exceed also gets a more sophisticated four-wheel drive system, a top of the range audio package and a sunroof.

As far as practicality goes, the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is spacious and comfortable.  There is a whopping 886 litres behind the rear seats, which grows to 1602 litres when the rear seats are folded flat.  A decent amount of storage comes as standard throughout the cabin.  The glovebox is reasonably big, and there’s also a deep cubby compartment under the central armrest that will swallow lots of paraphernalia.  Two cupholders are in front of the gear selector, as well as a USB port and a 12V power socket.  The bins in the front doors are very big, easily designed to take a 1-litre bottle of water.  Back-seat passengers also get door bins in the doors for bottles.  Two cupholders are located in the fold-down armrest.  Five and seven seater models are available.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV comes with a 5-star ANCAP safety rating, so this vehicle offers decent peace of mind motoring for the family.  Out on the road the PHEV Outlander rides comfortably and in a relaxed manner.  The 2.4-litre petrol motor is more than up to the task for carting your family away on a holiday about Australia and with 4WD a standard feature you won’t be getting stuck anytime soon.  0-100 km/h in the Outlander PHEV is over-and-dusted in a leisurely 10.5 seconds, while it cruises effortlessly at the open road speed limit.  You can also tow a 750 kg unbraked trailer or 1500 kg braked.
