The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is a decent sized family SUV that has all the features you’re going to want, is enjoyable to drive and is pretty well set with all the right new technology onboard to make your journey a decent one. You have the option of your 2021 CX-5 SUV having a 2.0-litre petrol engine with FWD and a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox. Then, should you require more power, Mazda offer you the CX-5 with a 2.5-litre motor with 4WD capability and standard with the six-speed gearbox. A diesel motor is also available. And, obviously, there are a few trims to choose from as well.
The latest Mazda CX-5 SUV retains the classy looks of its predecessor, making it still one of the best-looking mid-size SUVs on the market. It comes with 5 doors, 5 seats and 5-star safety. ANCAP crash testing gave this a very good crash test rating and you’ll find it kitted out with all the best safety features. Dual frontal, side chest-protecting and side head-protecting (curtain) airbags are standard. standard. Autonomous emergency braking (AEB), rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot sensors and a driver-set speed limiter are standard. A lane departure warning system (LDW) with lane keep assist (LKA) is also available on some variants.
Over the last four or five years, the mid-size CX-5 has been a benchmark among this SUV class. It impresses with its quality presentation both on the outside and in the interior. Its road performance is sharp, and it is an SUV which provides a nice, composed ride that is quiet and agile. Around town the suspension can feel a bit stiff but out on the motorway it feels really well planted and composed. Easy and ergonomic controls make life in the driver’s seat comfortable, while the visibility out over the front of the bonnet is nice. The reverse parking camera enables you to get a good picture of what’s happening behind you, and there are parking sensors to help guide you in and out of tight spaces.
Under the hood you can get crisp power from the standard 2.0-litre powerplant that puts out 115 kW and 200 Nm. Owners of this base model will enjoy the best fuel economy of the petrol models. On average you should see well under 8 litres/ 100 km on a regular basis. The larger 2.5-litre engine takes the performance up a notch to 140 kW and 252 Nm, taking the mid-size SUV to a more relaxed feel out on the open road.
For the performance-types among us, Mazda has equipped the CX-5 with Turbo engines, where 170 kW of power links with the 420 Nm of torque to give a very grunty drive and magnificent touring ability. There is also a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel that has been uprated to 147 kW and 450 Nm, just recently. The diesel motor is the one for those of us who are going to be towing regularly. And, speaking of towing, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is capable of towing a 750 kg unbraked trailer or up to 1800 kg if it’s braked.
Yes, the Mazda CX-5 accommodates adult passengers in comfort, albeit a bit of a squish for the middle back seat occupant; and luggage slips right inside quite easily to a volume of around 500 litres with the rear seats in place. This is actually on a par with the segment average, eg., CR-V, Tucson, the Sportage and the like. Satellite navigation is standard from the Mazda CX-5 Maxx Sport upwards, while the top-spec CX-5 Akera comes with lovely leather, powered and heated front seats, adaptive cruise control and a really good head-up display. There is a real air of quality about the modern Mazda vehicles, and the CX-5 exudes this in spades. Plenty of stylish soft leatherette surfaces with accented stitching combined with beautiful fake veneer inserts and lots of chrome make the CX-5 a very elegant place to spend time. Black and light trims are available.
All new Mazda CX-5 SUVs come with a 5 year/unlimited km warranty and a 5 year roadside assistance package. The new CX-5 is a stylish looking SUV that is practical (particularly about the cabin) and lovely to drive. The new Mazda CX-5 needs to be on your shortlist…
