For around $100k you can get yourself into the base model of what many regard as the best mid-size luxury sedan on the market today. It is the 2021 Mercedes Benz E-Class Sedan that we’re talking about, and it is a luxury sedan that sets the benchmark in so many ways.
When we talk about a sedan, we’re talking about the practicality of having 4 doors and that separate boot space out the back that will hold the smelly footie gear or the rubbish bags. That’s the bonus of running with a sedan instead of a station wagon or SUV; the cargo is held separate in its own compartment, away from the occupant’s seating space – and I like it that way. The latest E-Class Sedan comes with 540 litres of space in the boot compartment, which is actually class-leading. BMW’s 5-Series sedans hold 530 litres, an Audi A6 sedan takes 530 litres and a Lexus ES 473 litres, just to put it in perspective. The new E-Class Sedan has these guys licked then. The rear seats can fold down flat if you want to put a bike in the back, and then there are some cargo nets, various hooks and even some under floor storage space, as well as a collapsible crate, which folds up and stores under the boot floor as well.
A 2021 Mercedes Benz E-Class Sedan also boasts 5-seats and a 5-Star ANCAP safety rating. With five seats it means that even tall adults can sit comfortable in the back. Leg room is excellent and even head space with the glass roof is fine. USB ports and a 12V socket are located in the back of the centre console so that rear seat passengers can do the things they need to do in the back seats with these sockets. Leather upholstery is the go-to material for all new 2021 Mercedes Benz E=Class models. All the cars come with LED interior lighting in various colour tones to add a bit of that nightlife ambience. The headlights are also LED and provide excellent brightness and road safety.
All new E-Class Sedans come with ambient lighting, climate control 2-zone, cup holders front and rear, distance control, keyless start – key/fob with proximity function, map/reading lamps, a pollen filter, a starter button, voice recognition, the full digital instrument display, satellite navigation, a speed limiter controller, a speed zone reminder – road sign recognition, a trip computer and tyre pressure sensoring.
The AMG models get the power domes in the bonnets, which are the scoops to give it a musclier look and even more street cred – as if they were ever wanting! New taillights wrap around the new E-Class Sedan’s backside and go further into the boot lid. This design is sleeker and looks better than the outgoing model. Side on, the profile is much the same as before, with nice bands of chrome around the windows and doors. At the front of the new E-Class you’ll notice a big difference in styling, as the design has altered to make a more detailed grille and sleeker headlamps. The standard 18-inch alloys look really good but, if you want larger ones, then they are available and will fill out the arches really well.
So, the biggest 12-inch infotainment screens come as standard across the range. The dash is fully digitalized, and the driver’s display flows on nicely to the more central, centre-dash infotainment displays. The 2021 Mercedes Benz E-Class digital dash is beautiful and feels leagues ahead of the competition. The nicely padded steering wheel looks cool and feels great, though the sportier steering wheel options with there double-spoked design doesn’t quite roll with the rest of the dash styling – but that might just be my tastes. The touch pad controller that sits down on the centre console is user-friendly and makes scrolling through the menus on the infotainment system simple; Voice Command adds to this ease of use. As far as audio sound goes, even the base model has a sound system to blow your socks off! There are 13-speakers in the top models.
Onto the driving experience: it all starts off in the driver’s seat, which is immensely comfortable – thanks hugely to the vast electronic adjustment of the seat and steering wheel. Memory functions are also standard. Next, we go to the suspension, which is adaptive and has comfort mode for those bumpy roads and city streets. The ride quality of the latest E-Class Sedan is exceptional and outstanding, and you’ll also notice that the cabin is very quiet. This of course makes the new E-Class Sedan very relaxing to drive. But what about for those of us who like the sporty bits of our driving experience? The short answer is that the E-Class responds in an instant to your demands, so whether you pootle about or mash the pedal to the floor, the new E-Class does it all.
Mercedes Benz has updated the engines for the new E-Class Sedans and so the E200 uses a 2.0-litre Turbo Premium ULP engine with DOHC and a 9-speed sports automatic. With a maximum of 145 kW of power at 6100 rpm and 320 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm this is enough oomph to get you through the 0-100 km/h sprint in under 8 seconds and on to a top speed of over 230 km/h.
Next comes the E300 e, which uses VVT on the engine above to tease out 155 kW and 350 Nm. But the thing with this engine is that it also boasts electric power as well, so the car grabs as much regenerative energy as it can and shoves that back into the battery pack. The result of this hybrid technology is amazing fuel economy; seriously who needs an EV!
Next comes the E350 with its performance edition of the standard 2.0-litre Turbo motor. The result is a thumping 220 kW and 400 Nm on tap. 0-100 km/h takes just 5.4 seconds.
Lastly, we go to the AMG engines. The smallest of these is a 3.0-litre Turbo Premium ULP motor with 320 kW/520 Nm. The car is limited to 250 km/h and can race through the 0-100 in 4.5 seconds. The bigger one is a 4.0-litre V8 packing 450 kW and 850 Nm and is the quickest new E-Class Sedan. Both AMG models send the power out to all four wheels and use the specially designed 9-speed sports automatic.
Smart, stylish, sophisticated, and boasting new tech, new engines and new design; all this has helped keep the new E-Class sedan at the forefront of medium-size luxury cars. There are few others marques that’ll match it.
