Mazda’s new MX-30 is probably the coolest Mazda I’ve seen for some years. The design is fun and represents an owner who has an energetic lifestyle, a zest for life and a bit of zoom. Tackling the likes of a Kia Niro, Toyota C-HR and the Prius brigade head on takes some balls, however with its crisp styling, which is in line with the Mazda ‘Kodo’ design philosophy, innovative materials throughout and its unique layout, the little Mazda MX-30 could easily be seen as an alternative to any trendy hybrid or electric city car.
At 4395 mm long and 1795 mm wide, the new Mazda MX-30 isn’t a big, cumbersome vehicle. It’s been designed with city commuting in mind, and, when you look at the 2021 Mazda MX-30 as a small and compact SUV, it starts to make a lot of sense. Because fashion and looks say so much about you, the way Mazda has provided the little MX-30 with such a nice range of interior upholsteries and trims, along with a unique interior style and elegant dash design, the car is a winning formula. Those on the lookout for a small mild-hybrid or city EV (electric version of MX-30 on the way) with a difference need to take a gander at the MX-30 and be prepared to be wowed.
First of all, the exterior of the little Mazda MX-30 is cute; and it’s not easy to make an SUV outline adorable. Mazda have done a great job at bringing a bit of the MX-5 and RX-8 energy into the design and prettying it up somewhat so that it has those cute curves and baby face looks that makes anyone go gooey. The big hit design also boasts rear doors that open forwards, just like in the RX-8. In everyday life, these suicide doors work really well and offer decent access into the rear seats. The high and flared wheel arches make the MX-30 look taller and larger than it is, while the high waistline and low roofline give the car spunk and a bit of sass. The new MX-30 can also come with a roof in a different colour or tone to the body, which is a winning statement in itself, and Mazda also offer some very cool alloy designs for the wheels. I love it!
Hop inside the interior, and what you get is that typical nicely laid out Mazda interior, which works ergonomically and sensibly but now has a good pinch of style and flare to grab your attention – not something one would usually correlate with Mazda cars. This is a fresh new path that Mazda has taken, and it really is a stylish, fun interior that looks like it’s the perfect car for taking your friends out for a latte or out for a fun night on the town. The cloth seats are gorgeous, and they come in stunning patterns with seams that have a vivid zing, like the grey/black fleck material with a light orange accent at the seams and then an off-white surround – stunning! The quality of craftsmanship is superb, there are plenty of soft touch surfaces and a light sprinkling of chrome trimmings to give the little Mazda MX-30 a class of its own.
Kicking off the MX-30 range is the Mazda MX-30 G20e Evolve. Even this base model boasts features that include: LED automatic headlights, LED daytime running lamps, high beam auto dipping, rain sensoring wipers, electric folding mirrors, an aux input, a USB socket, an input for an iPod, an MP3 decoder, Bluetooth connections, a multi-function control touchscreen, DAB radio, an 8-speaker stereo, bottle holders front and rear, a cargo area organiser/shelving/divider, 2-zone climate control, cup holders, distance control, keyless start and key/fob proximity, a starter button, map/reading lamps, a pollen filter, storage in centre console, a sunglasses holder, vanity mirrors for drone seat occupants, a digital clock, a partial digital instrument display, GPS satellite navigation, speed zone reminder and road sign recognition, a trip computer and a tyre pressure monitoring system. This is a very well-equipped car. You can get a few options as well, like: premium paint (approx. $495); a vision technology pack (approx. $1,500) that includes a front camera, side camera, front cross traffic alert, driver attention detection and a parking distance system for the front.
Next model in line is the Mazda MX-30 G20e Touring. To be honest, there isn’t too much difference to the base model with the Touring trim; you can expect to see a few more premium trimmings in the interior, a key fob proximity feature, anti-glare mirrors, auto dipping mirrors, electric mirrors, electronic front seats, and a bit more leather about the cabin.
The top of the range Mazda MX-30 G20e Astina is the bees knees. Adding to the Touring model’s equipment list are features like: front and rear parking distance control, a full 360 degree camera display, shadowing headlights, heated leather seats and a 12-speaker sound system. There are also three more exterior colours to choose from including a nice cherry red. You can also get the Astina with optional paint jobs that include: 3-Tone Paint – Ceramic Metallic with black roof and grey pillars (approx.. $995), 3-Tone Paint – Polymetal Grey Metallic with black roof and silver pillars (approx. $1,490) and 3-Tone Paint – Soul Red Crystal Metallic with black roof and grey pillars (approx. $1,490)
All Mazda MX-30 SUVs are five-star safe – yay! So things like 10 airbags, ABS, brake assist, seat belt load limiters and pre-tensioners, electronic stability control, traction control, alert/warning – collision forward, blind spot sensors, brake emergency display – hazard/stoplights, collision mitigation – reversing with braking, collision warning – rearward, control – crash avoidance with braking (high spd), control – crash avoidance with braking (low spd), control – pedestrian avoidance with braking, cross traffic alert – rear, lane departure warning, lane keeping – active assist, parking assistance – graphical display, warning – driver fatigue, active yaw, EBD (electronic brake force distribution) and a hill hold feature are standard on all of the MX-30 variants. The Astina model adds front, rear and side cameras. It also has front and rear parking distance control, Driver Attention Detection and an engine immobiliser.
In the engine department you’ll currently find a sweet 2.0-litre 91-octane motor with mild hybrid technology that is hooked up to a six-speed sports automatic gearbox. All models at the time of writing use this engine, and they are FWD and sit on 18-inch alloys. The engine is smooth and energetic with 114 kW and 200 Nm on tap.
Out on the road the little MX-30 handles nicely, rides well, and feels spirited and fun to drive. Fuel consumption for this mild hybrid is around 6.5 litres/100km. Mazda says that you can tow an unbraked trailer of 600 kg or a braked trailer of 800 kg.
The 2021 Mazda MX-30 will be joined by the full electric MX-30 by early next year. For now, this is a nice alternative for those who commute into town and head out on the road to get away from it all. There is 311 litres of boot space with the rear seats up, and it is a nice comfortable cabin and modern environment for the small family.
