Good family cars come in two forms: the sedan and the wagon.  Volkswagen has given us another new Passat to enjoy, and this is an ideal car for the business exec or the person with a growing family.  The 2021 Passat has an elegant design, but this time around it comes with a chunkier front end, which adds to the car’s strength but takes a tack away from the sleeker bumper and headlight design of the outgoing model.  Plenty of people will like the stronger face that the new Passat possesses, and the new model makes a strong go of it in the mid-to-large car class.

You can have the 2021 VW Passat in Sedan and Wagon form, and both of these variations offer two engine options as well.  The current range kicks off with the Passat 140 TSI Business version, which uses a front-wheel-drive 140 kW/320 Nm 2.0-litre TSI petrol motor that is linked to a nice DSG 7-speed automatic gearbox.  Business variants get the full 5-star tick for an ANCAP safety rating, and that’s the sort of thing you expect when buying new these days.  There are 9 airbags situated throughout the cabin for a superbly strong cocoon of safety.

Out on the road the 140 TSI models do ride nicely, and the ride comfort is excellent as the chassis softens all the road undulations nicely and quietly.  There is a decent, accurate steering feel when you get down to business through quick open road cornering, though this model isn’t meant to compete with the likes of an Audi S4 or Skoda RS; and to be honest, I would rather it didn’t because you buy a car like this for relaxed, comfortable travel for all the family and for all occasions.

The other model in the new VW Passat Sedan and Wagen range is the Elegance versions.  These use a slight upgrade in performance in the 2.0-litre engine, while the FWD set-up that is used in the Business model remains the same.  The 162 kW on offer is brisk, and there is a healthy flow of up to 350 Nm of torque in this guise.  You should see 100 km/h come up in around eight seconds if you give it the beans from a standstill, and the Passat 162 TSI variants can run onto speeds in excess of 225 km/h.

One handy thing to note is that either the Sedan or Wagen Passat are capable of towing a 750 kg unbraked trailer, which extends out to 2000 kg if the trailer has brakes.  The other piece of useful information you can ponder over is that there is also another choice of 2021 Volkswagen Passat.  The higher-riding Passat Alltrack wagon, which boasts Subaru Legacy-like driving with its AWD grip and 162 kW of power.  These sturdy station wagons are lovely to drive and impeccably well put together.  A sunroof and even an upgraded Vienna leather interior adds to the classy feel.
