I’m not sure why I think of the word ‘squirt’ when I see the ‘SQ2’ model number of Audi’s little pocket rocket SUV. Maybe it’s because it is one of the smallest Audi SUVs you can buy. It is a small SUV that perhaps looks more like a racy hatch on stilts. However, it’s quite a delightful car with plenty of pep and with all of Audi’s lovely impeccable finish and eye for detail. Having just been added recently, and rearing to go, the 2022 Audi SQ2 is an exciting car to drive. I know you’re likely to like it because Australians just love a sporty variant of an SUV!
OK, you’re probably not going to opt for the new Audi SQ2 if you have a sizeable family because there are larger SUVs in Audi’s line-up that are better suited to your requirements. With a 355-litre boot (50 litres down on the Q2), the SQ2 is as practical as a family hatchback, rather than a full-blown SUV. Even the Q3 has more interior and cargo space, and the Q5 has markedly more again. If you want a great driving position, a comfortable cabin, and superb performance, the new Audi SQ2 could be a premium choice for an older person/couple or maybe that single exec who needs a modern set of wheels to turn up at the boardroom meeting. But then I could just be getting carried away playing the guessing game of who would be inside the SQ2’s biggest buying base. It is certainly a nice racy machine for a lady out on the town too!
One thing about all new Audi cars is that they are safe – very safe. The Audi Q2 was first introduced into Australia and New Zealand in early 2017. ANCAP crash tests were done on the Q2 model and the safety rating applies to all Q2 variants, although not specifically for the SQ2 that was released last year. The Audi Q2 scored a full 5-stars with excellent results in all facets of the test. Audi SQ2 variants are unrated at writing, however they are similarly designed and loaded with items like dual frontal airbags, side chest-protecting airbags for front occupants, side head-protecting airbags (curtains) for front and second rows, and autonomous emergency braking (AEB) is standard. Improved safety for the new Audi SQ2 comes with the inclusion of Audi’s latest pre-sense autonomous emergency braking system and adaptive cruise control that can now self-steer to keep within its lane on the highway.
Buy one of the new SQ2 versions and you also enjoy a 5-year unlimited km warranty as well as having 1-year of roadside assistance should you need it. The engine and driveline you’ll find for getting the job done in the SQ2 involves 221 kW of power and as much as 400 Nm of torque (between 2000 and 5200 rpm) coming from the 2.0-litre TFSI Turbo ULP motor, which sends the power out to the Quattro AWD underpinnings. Using the quattro AWD/dual-clutch transmission driveline to good effect, you can get the new SQ2 to sprint from 0–100 km/h in a rapid 4.9 seconds. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is a fine specimen that is happy to spin freely and quickly through to the redline. Audi claims the car can achieve 7.7 litres/100 km, but you’ll likely settle for a tad more than this on your everyday drive. For all the get up and go, the new SQ2 is pretty decent at the pump.
Cabin highlights include Nappa leather front sports seats with diamond-patterned contrast stitching, S embossing and contrasting colours. There’s an S sport leather steering wheel and a 12.3-inch virtual cockpit with and S-specific display. Spending time inside the new SQ2 cabin feels sporty without being uncomfortable, just the way most of the everyday drivers, like me, like it. It rides well, grips well, goes hard, stops quickly, and still feels refined.
It boasts matrix LED headlights, a lower ride height (20 mm lower than the standard versions), red brake callipers, silver wing mirror caps, and a sports exhaust. In my humble opinion this would be the Q3 model to buy, as I think the added razzle dazzle of the exterior sport’s trimming adds visual appeal, and a sporting edge. With its sights on the Mercedes-Benz AMG GLA 35 and BMW’s M35i X2, the sporty SQ2 can be had for around the $75k mark. There is plenty of standard kit, including all the good tech, to go along with the car, though there are also some attractive options to individualize your new Audi SQ2 just for you.
