2020 Audi A3

2020 Audi A3 Sportback

Audi’s are a high-end choice.  It’s been evident for a couple of decades that Audi deliver a vehicle with premium build quality, a richness in every detail throughout the cabin, and they do make a point of using the best materials.  We’re cruising nicely into 2020, and Audi offer a delightful range of new Audi A3 models to cruise the road.

So how big is a new Audi A3?  It sits in the small car category and runs adjacent with cars like the BMW 1 Series, Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla, Mercedes Benz A-Class and VW Golf.  There are three varieties of A3 to choose from, and these include the Hatchback (Sportback), Sedan and Cabriolet.

Visually, the 2020 Audi A3 looks really nice in the metal.  I don’t know what it is about the smaller A3 cars, but their compact dimensions tend to look more balanced, more together, and especially sporty and athletic.  Add the compact lines with attractive, large alloys and you have a super looking ride.  The S-Line models get rear indicators that pulse vertically for a very cool visual display.  This is one of the neat features Audi have given their latest range of cars, and there is no doubt that it is a visually striking feature.  The new LED Headlight Matrix also looks very classy.

Head inside the 2020 Audi A3 and the look is stylish enough, the seats superb and everything is well laid out and easy to live with.  Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make for easy Smartphone connections.  The A3’s audio systems are amongst the best in class, delivering a nice depth to the clarity of sound.  Audi A3s can come with Audi’s excellent virtual cockpit which is essentially a brilliant digital driver’s display, worth the extra dollars for lighter-equipped versions.  It comes as standard on A3 S-Line versions, however.

A multifunction steering wheel makes for easy scrolling through various optional digital driver displays, and the chunky, flat bottom sports leather steering wheel looks and feels terrific.  In the centre of the dash is a tidy touchscreen that gives onlookers a crisp high definition digital display.  Satellite navigation is quick and easy to use, while your own Smartphone can wirelessly connect to the system for running all your favourite Apps.  You get a dual-zone climate control system inside a new A3, too.

Seating comfort for those in the front of the Audi A3 is exceptionally nice.  Leather upholstered models do offer a sumptuous seat that feels snug and looks beautiful.  Front occupants get large door bins that hold a 1.5-litre water bottle and other paraphernalia.  There is good centre console storage and a decent size glovebox as well.

Rear seat passengers will be fine with space.  The new A3 is a leader in this respect.  Head and leg room is very good and, if there are just two large adults in the back, they can enjoy the fold down centre armrest with cup holders as well as excellent storage space in the door bins.  Three adults will fit across the back seat, but the middle seat occupant will feel a bit tight for shoulder room.  The A-Class is probably a better bet if you want to carry three adults in the back seat, often.  If you need to carry just two, then this is the best in class for space and comfort.  Isofix points in the back make for simple and easy fitment of child seats.

A bit of underfloor storage, a deep and wide floor, and flat sides do make the A3 Sportback’s boot dimensions feel bigger than it actually is.  It is about average for the class – 380 litres with the rear seats in place and 1220 litres when the rear seat is fully folded down.  Tethering points, an adjustable boot floor height, and a 40:20:40 split-folding back adds to the new A3 Sportback’s practicality.

Just for comparison: the Sedan versions of the new Audi A3 have a distinguished and sophisticated look.  Boot space in the sedan versions is actually bigger than the Sportback: 425 litres FWD models and 390 litres Quattro models.  Cabriolet versions offer 320 litres of boot space with the roof in place and 275 litres with the roof down.  I don’t think you’ll be buying the Cabriolet because you want amazing boot space, however.  Doesn’t it look gorgeous?!

2020 Audi A3 Cabriolet

Every new Audi A3 model comes with some great new technological components, automatic Xenon headlights, automatic windscreen wipers and cruise control – these are all standard features across the entire Audi A3 range.

Out on the road the 2020 Audi A3 is comfortable, quiet and a good handler.  The FWD models all provide an accurate steering feel and excellent body control with plenty of grip.  You can also get the A3 in AWD.  Audi Quattro AWD delivers superb handling and traction, while enhancing stability on wet or low grip surfaces. The distribution of power from the front to rear is adjusted automatically, within a fraction of a second, to suit changes in road surface conditions.

Audi TFSI petrol engines combine direct injection with turbocharging.  This releases a higher power output with greater fuel efficiency.  Three of the engines connect with the FWD platform, and they range in power output: 85 kW, 110 kW and 140 kW, respectively.  Even the smallest 1-litre motor can pack 200 Nm of torque between 2000 and 3500 rpm.  The 2.0-litre 140 kW engine is available with either the FWD or Quattro platform.  Choose the Quattro platform, and combine 320 Nm of torque between 1500 and 4200 rpm with a 6.2 second 0-100 km/h sprint time, and this little car is quick.

Yes, the new A3 is a delightful car and it does have an alluring nature that draws you to want to keep driving it.  The premium feel does add to the satisfying A3 ride, and it does everything really well.  Don’t forget the Cabriolet option which really is a special summer’s day drive.
