The seventh generation 3 Series Beemer is now available in Australia. Awesome looks, particularly in the M Sport versions, give amazing road presence for this new car. At the front, the gorgeous front bumper and head lights give plenty of muscle and sex appeal. Down the flanks, the new 3 Series is all about speed. Finishing at the rear, you get some nice 3-dimensional tail-lights which do look pretty cool. With the new 2019 BMW 3 Series, the car also impresses with its innovative technology.
All 2019 3 Series sedans come standard with new LED lighting, giving loads of class to the front 3 Series face – particularly at dawn and dusk when the lighting gets moodier. A bevy of attractive standard comfort and convenience features see the base 3 Series models come with a panoramic glass roof, automatic LED headlights, LED interior lighting, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and three-zone automatic climate control. Laser-light technology gives the new BMW 3 Series driver up to 500 meters of night time vision on the road ahead. It’s lots more modern – and that’s just the start.
The 2019 BMW 3 Series is worth a look for drivers who like the idea of getting lots of standard amenities and loads of high technology for the money handed over. One really cool new feature that you might like is BMW’s reverse mapping system. So, what happens here is that if you trundle down a really narrow city driveway and meet another driver coming the other way that causes you to have to back track, then BMW has this system in the new 3 Series so that you can select the reversing aid feature, take your hands of the wheel and the car will reverse by itself. Pretty cool, eh?
Also, if you have the right Android Smartphone, you can hold the Smartphone up to the car and it will unlock for you. No more key hassles – until you lose your keys… um … smartphone! Once inside, place your Smartphone on the wireless charging pad and you can push the car’s start button and away you go. This system is called the BMW Digital Key.
2019 sees the new 3 Series offering a forward collision warning system with pedestrian detection. And the list of optional features includes a blind-spot warning system and a rear cross-traffic alert system. BMW kits the new 3 Series with an optional Intelligent Personal Assistant. This technology responds to the prompt “Hey BMW,” and it provides aid that is based on an analysis of each driver’s habits and routine. It’s designed to offer smart solutions to problems. For example, “Hey BMW, I feel tired” activates a vitality program that alters the car’s lighting, music, and temperature in ways designed to help the driver feel more awake. You could also take the initiative and pull over for a nap!
On a more practical note, being 76 mm longer than its predecessor, and also wider, this car has more interior room and plenty of luggage space (480 litres for sedans). This is on par with the room provided by a typical midsize sedan, and it represents a small increase over the outgoing model’s cargo capacity. As mentioned before, the length of the new BMW 3 has grown, and this is especially noticeable when you climb inside the rear seats. Sitting in the rear seat you find much more leg and head room so that even tall adults should be happy and comfortable here. Plenty of storage space is scattered around the cabin making family life that little bit easier. And on the matter of family, BMW claim that you can place three child seats across the rear seat, so if you have triplets the new 3 Series should get on your new car wish list!
Initially, BMW will offer two four-cylinder engine variants: the 320d turbo-diesel and the turbo-petrol 330i. Both engines have been upgraded in the new-generation 3 Series.
The 2019 BMW 3 Series 330i gets some engine upgrades that are designed to boost performance. There’s a new, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine running the show, offering 190 kW and 400 Nm of torque — a marked increase over the previous generation’s output. And there’s a new 8-speed automatic transmission shifting the gears very smoothly and efficiently.
BMW 320d models are swift and efficient and packed with loads of torque.
The blend of engine power and transmission wizardry sees the new 3 Series being more capable than ever before. Audi’s A4 is similar to the 2019 3 Series in that these two are the powerhouses in their class segment when it comes to performance. You can sprint through to 100 km/h from a standstill in less than six seconds.
Out on the road, the 2019 BMW 3 Series is superb, and it better be because Audi’s new A4 is also superb. BMW claim the 3 Series provides 50 percent more body rigidity, while the centre of gravity is even lower. That’s good news for ‘hoons’ because the latest 3 Series loves cornering. You’ll notice that the car is quieter. BMW has put a sound deadening windscreen at the front as well as more sound proofing material throughout the body shell. Give it the beans, and even base Advantage models are responsive and light on their feet.
Later this year the new BMW 3 Series flagship will be the BMW M340i xDrive which combines 275 kW and AWD, making it the fastest 3 Series until the all-new M3 and M4 models arrive further down the track. Confirmed to go on sale in Australia in the second half of 2019, the BMW M340i xDrive has been developed in cooperation with BMW M division. The reworked 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine now packs 275 kW from the TwinScroll turbocharging. Torque also increases to 500 Nm taking less than 5 seconds for the 0-100 km/h dash. Despite the extra power, torque and performance, BMW says the M340i xDrive is still capable of returning 7.5 litres/100 km.
BMW’s latest is great to drive, got loads of technology and feels premium inside. With its 2019 redesign, the latest BMW 3 Series continues to set the standard in its segment, though Audi, Mercedes Benz, Lexus, Volvo and Jaguar all offer a premium drive – and would, fairly, have you think otherwise.
