Following hot on the heels of the sedan is the wagon version of the nice looking 2019 BMW 3 Series. Called the BMW 3 Series Touring, this wagon will be the ‘go to’ model for cargo duties, mainly due to the extra boot space. But I reckon that the long, low roof line gives the Touring model a pleasing outline that many buyers will appreciate. As with any of the other new 3 Series cars there is plenty of choice as far as engine power and trim levels.
Known for being luxurious and sporty over the five generations of 3 Series cars we’ve enjoyed, this sixth generation BMW 3 Series Touring sets new standards in sporty Estate drives. It is now longer, wider and taller than ever before, so space inside the new BMW 3 Series station wagon is great for its class. The big, bold kidney grille is instantly BMW, and it is bordered with a thick chrome band which looks striking between the set of twin headlights. Down the side of the 3 Series Touring is a carefully sculptured depression that runs horizontally between the wheel arches and gives the car great presence. This is a particularly sporty BMW Touring wagon. Around the rear, the new BMW 3 Series wagon has a very neatly styled back end with twin exhaust outlines and wide haunches.
There are some really nice features that will catch your eye, and one of these is the fold back interior roof lining that reveals a cabin-long twin glass roof. There are some great storage options throughout the cabin which include decent bottle holders set in the doors, various cubby holes in the centre console, and a large glovebox. There is a designated area for placing your phone for wireless charging and connection. USB and 12 V points are available inside the cabin.
Boot space is good, with 500 litres available with the rear seats up. Obviously, this volume will grow depending on how much of the electronically adjustable split-folding rear seats you decide to fold flat (up to 1500 litres). It’s easy to load the boot up with stuff, and there is even that handy BMW feature which enables you to open up the glass in the tailgate without opening the entire 5th door – great for grabbing a sandwich out of the picnic basket or throwing in last minute items for the family holiday. The powered tailgate is a very nice addition. An under floor storage compartment, cargo nets and a 12 V plug are some other nice 3 Series Touring practicalities.
Standout features you’ll enjoy on your new BMW 3 Series Touring are items like three-zone climate control, premium alloys, automatic lights and wipers, a six-speaker 100 W stereo, acoustic glass and emergency braking. M Sport variants ramp things up some more with uprated brakes, adaptive suspensions, 19-inch alloy wheels, sport seats, M Sport detailing, and more. A new centre touchscreen projecting the latest infotainment software, a digital instrument cluster and improved voice activation systems mean that the 3 Series wagon has plenty of the best modern technology available.
Ride quality is good, and BMW has put a sound deadening windscreen at the front as well as more sound proofing material throughout the body shell, so the road noise is well muted. Give it the beans, and all models are responsive and light on their feet. Handling on even the base models is fluid and grippy. BMW claim the 2019 3 Series Touring provides 25 percent more body rigidity over the outgoing model, while the centre of gravity is even lower. Is it sporty? Yes it is! There is an optional driving assistant Professional pack available which will enable the car to pretty much drive itself.
The blend of engine power and transmission wizardry sees the new 3 Series being more capable than ever before. With a new 2.0-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine running the show, you are offered punchy performance with 190 kW and 400 Nm of torque on tap. There’s also a new 8-speed automatic transmission shifting the gears very smoothly and efficiently for you. Some other models will become available in 2020 including the AWD xDrive 340i Touring. A Hybrid model known as the 330e Touring will be available as well, so economy for this one should be impressive. But that’s economy with a 6.1 second 0-100 km/h capability!
Volvo’s V60 Estate is well worth a look in this type of company, as it might be a car you prefer over the latest 3 Series Touring. Audi, BMW, and Volvo are all making some great premium cars.
