I’m loving the practicality of the BMW 5 Series Touring. This sleek estate seems to have it all, and it always delivers on the performance front. Ease of use has priority in the BMW 5 Series Touring, and with a huge amount of luggage-carrying capacity, style and comfort this is the model for the whole family.
Plenty of new, innovative technology helps the new 5 Series Touring stay hugely luxurious and functional. The luggage compartment can be loaded and unloaded easily, thanks to an electronic open/shut rear gate. With the rear seats in place the luggage space is 570 litres. The rear seat backrest with its 40:20:40 split provides flexibility when transporting passengers and objects, and when it’s lying completely flat (you can do this with a touch of a button) there is a whopping 1700 litres of space available. Another very nice feature that I wish many other station wagon variants would offer is a rear gate window that can be opened to put in or take out luggage. A particularly practical feature is that when the rear window is opened, the roller cover goes up automatically. A left and right lashing rail with two moveable fastening points, two tensioning straps with plastic frames on the left and right side panelling, and a multipurpose hook all add to the 5 Series Touring’s practical nature. Driving BMW not only means practicality, you also have all the luxury that comes with it – and believe you me there is plenty.
Two models of BMW 5 Series Touring Estates make their way to Australia. Full of luxury and offering a superb driving experience is the BMW 520d Touring Luxury Line Model. In this variant you have a state-of-the-art turbo-diesel boasting 140 kW of peak power along with a lusty 400 Nm of torque. The torque is accessed low down in the engine revs for superior flexibility. Running with an eight speed automatic, life in a BMW 520d Touring is very refined and smooth. Fuel consumption is kept very low, BMW suggesting that you’ll get a combined cycle of around 5 litres/100 km. You can slip from 0-100 km/h in less than 8 seconds should you feel the need to stretch its legs. Given its full performance potential you’ll discover that the new BMW 520d Touring will run out to well in excess of 220 km/h.
Many like there wheels a little sportier in flavour and that is why BMW also offer the new 5 Series Touring in 530i M Sport variant. This model has plenty of sporty features to catch the eye, and these include: a dynamic damper control, M sport brakes, 19-inch BMW M light alloy wheels with a double-spoke pattern, BMW individual exterior line aluminium detailing, an M aerodynamics package, lumbar support for driver and front passenger, seat heating for driver and front passenger, a sport seats for driver and front passenger, a special BMW individual roofliner in anthracite material, an M leather steering wheel, a Harman/Kardon surround sound system with 600W and a digital amplifier and 16 loudspeakers, a multifunctional instrument display, a 12.3-inch high-resolution colour display with black-panel technology, and a range of crisp exterior colours to flaunt it off nicely. Under the hood of the M Sport model is another 2.0-litre turbo engine but this time it’s with petrol performance and technology. Linked to an eight-speed sport automatic the BMW 530i Touring uses the full 185 kW on offer to best effect. You can scamper through the 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds and enjoy as much as 350 Nm of torque. You can even enjoy all this Estate performance with a relatively low fuel bill. BMW state that this model has a CO2 emission of just 148 g/km.
Both engines provide mild hybrid technology that serves to recuperate the kinetic energy during braking. The mild hybrid technology also makes the Automatic Start/Stop function much faster and much more comfortable. BMW’s powertrain is truly state-of-the-art.
If you are a bit of a music buff, then a special Bowers and Wilkins Diamond surround sound system with two diamond tweeters and 16 speakers gives an outstanding studio-quality sound. The speakers are illuminated, visually emphasizing the system’s outstanding sound quality and adding that all-important cool factor. You can punch out all your music favourites in truly concert-like sound.
Loads of the latest technology is found in new BMW 5 Series Touring models. Access to on-board features can be made through iPhone or Apple Watch applications. The Remote Control Parking function allows the driver to get out of the vehicle before parking it via remote control. If you opt for Driving Assistant Plus you can enjoy automated driving in situations such as traffic jams and slow-moving traffic or even on long journeys. Enhanced Bluetooth with wireless charging includes a wireless charging dock and additional USB ports. There is a roof aerial connection that improves mobile reception. Up to two mobile telephones and an audio player can be connected simultaneously via the BMW Bluetooth system.
The latest version of BMW’s excellent Head-Up Display projects situation-specific and journey-relevant information directly into the driver’s field of vision. Data such as your current speed is displayed, along with navigation tips, speed limit info, telephone and entertainment lists, and information and warnings from the various driver assistance systems – of which there are plenty. You can adjust and tweak the Heads-Up display as you desire, and the driver’s digital display for speed, engine revs and other information is a stunning design.
The 2019 BMW 5 Series Touring Estate has a ride and comfort level that is best in class. Even the driving experience can be controlled by the driver’s choices. BMW offers the driver the choice between the standard COMFORT Mode, ECO PRO Mode, and SPORT Mode. A new interactive function ADAPTIVE Mode continuously adjusts the Dynamic Damper Control, the steering and the Steptronic transmission to suit his/her driving style. BMW has a really nice driving experience that is very hard to beat. You pay for it but it is good.
Standard safety features on a 2019 BMW 5 Series Touring include: airbags for the front, full-length sides and head protection on the sides and in the headliner. There is also a knee airbag on the driver’s side. Striking dynamic braking tail lights, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), a powerful Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Braking Assistant, Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), a warning triangle and first aid kit, run-flat safety tyres and a run-flat indicator all add to the confidence you get in owning a luxury Estate with five-star safety.
