What! Another BMW? Talk about a heap of choice inside the BMW stable. This time we’ve got another winner, however, and it’s called the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe. Yes, it’s really nice. A thoroughbred in coupe/saloon form – essentially a BMW 1-Series with a backside added to give the added advantage of having the boot separate from the driver and cabin. I dig the looks, and the smaller dimensions add to the overall balance and sporty lines. Great things do come in small packages!
Locking heads with the very good Mercedes Benz CLA, the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe delivers a premium package that’s really engaging and nice to drive. Design features include a unique grille that has solid vertical bars inside the large kidney grille for visual contrast and impact. The busy headlight and bumper design captures a focused stance and incorporates big, crimped air scoops, and stylish driving lights. LED headlights have a classy design and definitely ensure you’re seen with the smart DRL pattern as you cruise the roads.
Side on, the new BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe has gorgeous, flowing lines that are well proportioned and definitely not overweight. Frameless doors, side skirts, black window edging, smart chrome alloy designs, and a shark fin antennae looks very modern and engaging. Head around to the rear of the car, and BMW have gone for slim-line LED taillights and a buxom butt. The twin exhaust outlets on either side of centre give the rear a nice proportion, overall. M cars come with sweet, sporty overtones.
FWD or AWD are what shoves the new BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe along. RWD has gone out the window; but all you RWD fans don’t weep to hard as the AWD delivers big time on the performance front. Also, BMW have a special traction control wired directly to the engine and this makes for very good control and confident handling capability.
Two petrol motors and one diesel engine are the options for delivering the horses under the hood. So, the 218i comes with a three-cylinder, 1.5-litre turbo-charged engine that makes 104 kW. Capable of sprinting through the 0-100 km/h time glass in around 9 seconds you have a willing package that feels responsive and nice to drive. It will be a popular seller for those who love the Gran Coupe style and love its pleasurable dynamics and ride without having to pay top dollar.
The top of the range M235i is the motorway marauder, and with 228 kW, an 8-speed auto with launch control and AWD the drive is nothing short of exhilarating. The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine has enough shove to scamper the coupe through the 0-100 km/h sprint in around 5 seconds flat. A top speed is limited to 250 km/h. There is that M-package flair about the M235i, as you would expect. Its sportier aerodynamic package, large alloys and big quad exhausts depict what performance potential you have in this model. BMW’s xDrive (AWD) comes as standard, and the system uses a limited slip-differential providing grip that’s phenomenal – so RWD fans don’t whinge because this is better! You can get this model with an adjustable suspension for Comfort and Sport modes.
The 2.0-litre 220d turbo-diesel is phenomenally good at raking up the miles, and it will do so as gently or as quickly as you like. The nice ride and handling, along with great pick up (0-100 km/h in less than 8 seconds) and efficiency (average less than 5 litres/100 km), make this model hard to overlook. You can have this version with M-Sport features as well.
More interior space than in a RWD 2-Series Coupe comes with the Gran Coupe’s teritory being based on the BMW 1-Series. So, you get more leg room for back seat passengers. There is also more headroom than what you get in the 1-Series hatch, as well as a 430 litre boot space. All is well then for those lucky enough to be inside the 2-Series Gran Coupe cabin.
BMW’s Live Cockpit Plus is a standard feature on-board the new 2-Series Gran Coupe. The 8.8-inch infotainment touchscreen sits on top of standard 2-series Gran Coupe dashboards, while the 5.0-inch digital driver’s display graces the dash, as well. Satellite navigation is a standard feature, and there are options for SiriusXM satellite radio, a wireless smartphone charging pad, and a Harman/Kardon (16-speaker) audio upgrade. Apple CarPlay comes as standard, two USB ports, a touch control system between the two front seats, WiFi connections, live parking updates, front and rear parking sensors and speed assistant. A Heads-Up display package is also available as an option.
Flagship models get a Professional package which adds a voice activation system, a 10-inch touchscreen as well as a 10-inch digital driver’s display – though this is also an optional extra for other models.
When considering the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe as a whole package, along with the considerably cheaper price tag over the Mercedes Benz CLA alternatives, you’re onto a winner here.
